When you Understand something you're more able to practise it fully without having any doubts, memorising is part of understanding, you can't understand something without first memorising it, but the kind of memorization I'm talking about here is not the "word-to-word" or "letter-to-letter" memorization, it's about memorising and understanding the general/final idea of the word of God not just being able to say and words and you can't extract the meaning of the words you said.

The Bible is philosophical, poetic and sometimes encrypted, blank memorization is wastage of time.
