ALEX FERGUSON admits he will never replace Cristiano Ronaldo - but reckons there are eight wonderkids who can lead Manchester United to more glory.
The Old Trafford boss accepts Ronaldo was in a class of his own - and not even players such as Bayern Munich ace Franck Ribery can fill his boots.
Fergie said: "We knew we could never replace Ronaldo. No matter what anyone says about the lad, for me he is the best footballer in the world.
"When you've had someone who is the best at what he does, it is no good trying to find someone to do the same job.
"And when you know you can't replace someone or something, you look for a different way.
"People have misread our situation and they have under-estimated our ability to improve players. That is an area where we have proved successful in the past.
"We are expecting a lot from Evans, Welbeck, Gibson, Macheda and the Da Silva brothers.
"And Nani and Anderson have already shown good things, but they will improve this season.
"We will miss Ronaldo's goals, that's obvious.
"But Berbatov will do well this year. And Rooney and Owen are both capable of getting 20 goals. So we've got plenty of options."
Ferguson also warned it would be foolish to write off United's 'Holy Trinity' of Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville.
He predicted they would all play their part in continuing the United success story, even though they are in their mid-30s.
He added: "People may say Giggs, Scholes and Neville are finished, that they've had their day. But that is a pretty dangerous assumption.
"Giggs has been out of this world in pre-season. I don't know how he does it - at 36 he still has so much energy, and an incredible change of pace to go past defenders.
"The only thing he does different now to when he started is yoga, and maybe that has helped prolong his career. But some people are just born that way.
"They seem capable of going on for ever. He still has that same desire to win things, but it's something you must have at Manchester United.
"You have to be able to fulfil the expectation of winning all the time - the only alternative is the exit door.
"People are also saying this is the last year for Scholes. But you have to remember he missed a lot of football last season and rushed himself back.
"As a result, he wasn't the same player. But he's been great in pre-season, too, and there's a lot of football left in him.

"Gary also suffered with injuries and I'm afraid that's the way it's going to be with him from now on.
"He's likely to get a lot of minor niggles, because his muscle arrangement is more tense than the other two and if I can get 25 games out of him I'll be very happy."
Ferguson is clearly happy with his team's preparations ahead of Sunday's Community Shield clash with Chelsea and their Premier League opener against promoted Birmingham seven days later.
United face Spaniards Valencia in their final pre-season friendly at Old Trafford tonight.
But Fergie was even relaxed enough to take a rare day off yesterday and give his golf clubs an outing as a celebrity player in the Farmfoods British Par Three Championship at Nailcote Hall, near Coventry.
His players may be in good nick but Fergie's golf could use some attention. He almost brained one spectator with a wayward tee shot at the opening hole.
Fergie added: "We've got the friendly game against Valencia tonight and the Community Shield coming up, but it was good opportunity to take a little break.
"We weren't doing a great deal today. The lads did a good session yesterday, after three days off following the Bayern Munich tournament.
"Coming back from the Far East you normally need two weeks to fully recover, and it helps if you get back into a good routine.
"So the timing of the Bayern Munich event last week was good for us in terms of our build-up.
"It also meant we could use their training and treatment facilities, which are among the best.
"We made the most of them every day, and our four days there left us in pretty good shape.
"Everyone is looking sharp and eager, so I'm more than happy with the way things have gone during our pre-season."
