FERGIE SLAMS UNFIT REFEREE

FA to review Ferguson comments about ref Wiley

By Soccernet staff

The FA will review Sir Alex Ferguson's comments about referee Alan Wiley, after the Manchester Utd boss slammed the official for lacking the fitness to keep up with a Premier League game, following Saturday's draw with Sunderland.

Fergie questioned the official's ability to keep up with play.

Ferguson launched an astonishing attack on Wiley after the game, believing he hadn't added enough time on, saying on Saturday: "He (Wiley) was not fit enough for a game of that standard. The pace of the game demanded a referee who was fit. He was not fit."
"I was disappointed with the referee,'' said the United boss. "He didn't add on any time for the goal. He played four minutes and two seconds. He was also walking up the pitch for the second goal needing a rest. He was not fit enough for a game of that standard.
"The pace of the game demanded a referee who was fit. He was not fit. It is an indictment of our game. You see referees abroad who are as fit as butcher's dogs. We have some who are fit. He wasn't fit. He was taking 30 seconds to book a player. He was needing a rest. It was ridiculous.''
The FA's discipline and governance division are reviewing Fergie's comments when they look back over the weekend's action, with the prosect of a charge of improper conduct to follow.
While the FA have halted bosses speaking about officials before matches, managers are free to discuss the refs and their performances, as long as it is in the context of the game. They must not, however, imply bias, question their integrity or comment on anything of a personal nature.
Wiley was reported to be ''very upset'' by the comments and is particularly aggrieved that his physical condition has been called into question, having passed a stringent fitness test before the start of the season and (like all top refs) undergoing regular checks.

Inter Milan goalkeeper Julio Cesar has denied speculation he is set for talks with Manchester United over a move to the Barclays Premier League.

Julio Cesar is widely regarded as one of the world's best goalkeepers and reports suggest United will do their utmost to prise him away from the San Siro in January to replace the ageing Edwin van der Sar, following a number of poor performances from Ben Foster.

The Brazil international's wife revealed that a "big club'' have made enquiries but Julio Cesar has dismissed her comments.

"I deny everything,'' he said. "I have a contract with Inter.''

Meanwhile, Inter have also rubbished the reports and technical director Marco Branca claims the club are working on a new deal for the 30-year-old whose contract runs to 2012.

"We are already working on a solution,'' Branca said. "Soon his contract will be sorted out.I don't see any problems, the discussions are continuing in a calm way.''

According to Julio Cesar's agent, United are interested in the Inter number one, but Josias Cardoso is confident of putting an end to speculation shortly by agreeing a new deal with the Serie A club.

"United showed their interest for Julio but until now have not made an official offer,'' he said. "At the moment we are talking with Inter to renew Julio's contract, but we have not yet arrived at an agreement. I hope to succeed before the end of the month, that's my aim.''

Julio Cesar's wife, Susana Werner, claimed yesterday he was being courted by one of the European greats.

"It's been a week of great emotions,'' she wrote on her blog. "My son celebrated his seventh birthday, while my husband was besieged by offers from a big club and that has made us happy. We don't intend to leave Milan but anything can happen in football.''

Meanwhile, the agent of Julio Cesar's Inter team-mate Maicon has claimed that United are also showing a keen interest in the right back. The Brazil international joined Inter from Monaco in 2006 and has developed into a key player in the Nerazzurri team since Jose Mourinho took over two years ago.

"United's interest in my client is not something new,'' Antonio Caliendo told Tuttopremier.it. "They have been following him for a while. Now it seems to me that they are pressing for him but I don't think there has been any concrete offers yet."
