Morning Reflection (QT)
Introduction
Today’s reading continues the discussion from yesterday (Ezekiel 18:1-20) and emphasizes returning to God and receiving forgiveness.
Reflection
In what way does today’s reading speak about individual and moral responsibility? What does today’s reading teach you about God?
Pray
Righteous and Sovereign God, you keep open the door for returning to you, repenting of my sin and receiving your forgiveness. Thank you for giving me the gift of a new mind and heart and for your mercy and grace.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Ezekiel 18:21-32
Ezekiel 18:21
But if the wicked man turns away from all the sins he has committed, if he keeps all my statutes and does what is just and right, he shall surely live. He shall not die!
Ezekiel 18:22
None of the crimes he has committed shall be remembered against him; he shall live because of the justice he has shown.
Ezekiel 18:23
Do I find pleasure in the death of the wicked—oracle of the Lord GOD? Do I not rejoice when they turn from their evil way and live?
Ezekiel 18:24
And if the just turn from justice and do evil, like all the abominations the wicked do, can they do this evil and still live? None of the justice they did shall be remembered, because they acted treacherously and committed these sins; because of this, they shall die.
Ezekiel 18:25
You say, “The LORD’s way is not fair!” Hear now, house of Israel: Is it my way that is unfair? Are not your ways unfair?
Ezekiel 18:26
When the just turn away from justice to do evil and die, on account of the evil they did they must die.
Ezekiel 18:27
But if the wicked turn from the wickedness they did and do what is right and just, they save their lives;
Ezekiel 18:28
since they turned away from all the sins they committed, they shall live; they shall not die.
Ezekiel 18:29
But the house of Israel says, “The Lord’s way is not fair!” Is it my way that is not fair, house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are not fair?
Ezekiel 18:30
Therefore I will judge you, house of Israel, all of you according to your ways—oracle of the Lord GOD. Turn, turn back from all your crimes, that they may not be a cause of sin for you ever again.
Ezekiel 18:31
Cast away from you all the crimes you have committed, and make for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. Why should you die, house of Israel?
Ezekiel 18:32
For I find no pleasure in the death of anyone who dies—oracle of the Lord GOD. Turn back and live!

Responsorial Psalm
Ps 79:8, 9, 11 and 13
R. (see 103:10a)
Lord, do not deal with us according to our sins.
Remember not against us the iniquities of the past;
may your compassion quickly come to us,
for we are brought very low.
R. Lord, do not deal with us according to our sins.
Help us, O God our savior,
because of the glory of your name;
Deliver us and pardon our sins
for your name’s sake.
R. Lord, do not deal with us according to our sins.
Let the prisoners’ sighing come before you;
with your great power free those doomed to death.
Then we, your people and the sheep of your pasture,
will give thanks to you forever;
through all generations we will declare your praise.
R. Lord, do not deal with us according to our sins.

I am the light of the world, says the Lord;whoever follows me will have the light of life.
Reading I
Jer 18:18-20
Jeremiah 18:18
“Come,” they said, “let us devise a plot against Jeremiah, for instruction will not perish from the priests, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophets. Come, let us destroy him by his own tongue. Let us pay careful attention to his every word.”
Jeremiah 18:19
Pay attention to me, O LORD, and listen to what my adversaries say.
Jeremiah 18:20
Must good be repaid with evil that they should dig a pit to take my life? Remember that I stood before you to speak on their behalf, to turn your wrath away from them.
Gospel
Mt 20:17-28
Matthew 20:17
As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve [disciples] aside by themselves, and said to them on the way,
Matthew 20:18
“Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death,
Matthew 20:19
and hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day.”
Matthew 20:20
Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee approached him with her sons and did him homage, wishing to ask him for something.
Matthew 20:21
He said to her, “What do you wish?” She answered him, “Command that these two sons of mine sit, one at your right and the other at your left, in your kingdom.”
Matthew 20:22
Jesus said in reply, “You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?” They said to him, “We can.”
Matthew 20:23
He replied, “My cup you will indeed drink, but to sit at my right and at my left [, this] is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”
Matthew 20:24
When the ten heard this, they became indignant at the two brothers.
Matthew 20:25
But Jesus summoned them and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and the great ones make their authority over them felt.
Matthew 20:26
But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant;
Matthew 20:27
whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave.
Matthew 20:28
Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Evening Reflection (QT)
Introduction
Today’s reading occurs during the reign of King Zedekiah of Judah and King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia (588 B.C.) when Judah was being invaded by the Babylonians. At such a time the purchase of land would seem to be foolish, but Jeremiah’s action indicates confidence in the future.
Reflection
Why had King Zedekiah imprisoned Jeremiah? In what ways do Jeremiah’s actions demonstrate his trust in God? What promise is given?
Pray
Lord God, teach me to trust in you and in your promises, even when circumstances may cause me to lose hope. Help me to hold fast to your precious Word.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Jeremiah 32:1-15
Jeremiah 32:1
The word came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah, king of Judah, the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar.
Jeremiah 32:2
At that time the army of the king of Babylon was besieging Jerusalem, while Jeremiah the prophet was confined to the court of the guard, in the house of the king of Judah.
Jeremiah 32:3
Zedekiah, king of Judah, had confined him there, saying: “How dare you prophesy: Thus says the LORD: I am handing this city over to the king of Babylon that he may capture it.
Jeremiah 32:4
Zedekiah, king of Judah, shall not escape the hands of the Chaldeans: he shall indeed be handed over to the king of Babylon. He shall speak with him face to face and see him eye to eye.
Jeremiah 32:5
He shall take Zedekiah to Babylon. There he shall remain, until I attend to him—oracle of the LORD. If you fight against the Chaldeans, you cannot win!”
Jeremiah 32:6
Jeremiah said, This word came to me from the LORD:
Jeremiah 32:7
Hanamel, son of your uncle Shallum, will come to you with the offer: “Purchase my field in Anathoth, since you, as nearest relative, have the first right of purchase.”
Jeremiah 32:8
And, just as the LORD had said, my cousin Hanamel came to me in the court of the guard and said, “Please purchase my field in Anathoth, in the territory of Benjamin; as nearest relative, you have the first right of possession—purchase it for yourself.” Then I knew this was the word of the LORD.
Jeremiah 32:9
So I bought the field in Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel, weighing out for him the silver, seventeen shekels of silver.
Jeremiah 32:10
When I had written and sealed the deed, called witnesses and weighed out the silver on the scales,
Jeremiah 32:11
I accepted the deed of purchase, both the sealed copy, containing title and conditions, and the open copy.
Jeremiah 32:12
I gave this deed of purchase to Baruch, son of Neriah, son of Mahseiah, in the presence of my cousin Hanamel and the witnesses who had signed the deed of purchase and before all the Judahites sitting around in the court of the guard.
Jeremiah 32:13
In their presence I gave Baruch this charge:
Jeremiah 32:14
Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Take these deeds of purchase, both the sealed and the open deeds, and put them in an earthenware jar, so they can last a long time.
Jeremiah 32:15
For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: They shall again purchase houses and fields and vineyards in this land.
