CONCERNS ABOUT CHILD SEX TOURISM IN KENYA

Poverty and lack of opportunities have resulted in a high prevalence of child sex tourism in the Kenyan coastal cities of Diani, Kilifi, Malindi and Mombasa.
Poverty has been targeted by Kenyan authorities as the main reason behind child sex tourism, with some parents’ even urging their children to become involved, making the action very difficult to stop. Titus Kangargi, chairman of the Kenya Association of Hoteliers stated that "The parents, most of whom happen to be poor, instead encourage their daughters [to sell sex] so as to supplement their family earnings".

The UN ‘Report on the Extent and Effect of Sex Tourism and Sexual Exploitation of Children on the Kenyan Coast’, documents that there is a high acceptance rate of child sex tourism among the Kenyan tourism industry. Such acceptance of illegal action against children is attracting those tourists who wish to engage in Child sex tourism to Kenya, undermining the legitimacy of the tourism industry.

Child sex tourism thriving in Kenya's port city of Mombasa

The port city of Mombasa has been a centre of trade for hundreds of years and is now a hotspot for underage prostitution.

Trace Kenya estimates there could be as many as 40,000 child sex workers in the city, and the trade extends up and down the coast to the seaside resort towns of Malindi and Diani.

Teenager says she was forced to have group sex with tourists
Mr Adhoch believes there is a community of paedophiles informing one another.

PHOTO Phoebe is 17 and has been a prostitute for two years.

"I think there is a network and they believe that you can get sex with children," he said.

"And I also believe that quite a number of these travellers — the wazungu (white men) come here for sex, for sex tourism."

The centre of this trade is Mtwapa, a small community just outside the city centre of Mombasa.

It looks like many other poverty stricken towns dotted across east Africa.

There are bars with plastic chairs and dirt floors, and corrugated iron shacks selling choma, meat roasted over a charcoal fire.

It is well known that this is the place to go to find a prostitute.

There are tourists, plenty of them, but they are overwhelmingly men. Almost all of them older men, in their 50s and 60s and usually walking alone or with their companion, a Kenyan local.

These people are looking for sex with children, underage prostitutes and the desperately poor willing to sell themselves so they have enough food.

At an information session for prostitutes, both legal and underage, we meet "Phoebe".

She is 17 and has been a sex worker for two years.

"I was a school dropper, and there was no work to do," she said.

"My friends invited me to join them — I thought it was cool."

She told us how she came from a poor family, and tried to explain her actions.

She said she wants to make money so she can buy expensive clothes and jewellery that will make her more of a catch for a rich white man on holidays.

But her experience of wazungu (white men) has not been good.

She told us of one occasion where she was forced to have group sex with tourists.

"My friends and I were there with them, and after that they refused to pay us," she said.

"They said that we were naughty and that sort of thing.

"They did not want virgins - they only wanted anal sex."

White men preying on girls perpetuate Pretty Woman myth
Mr Adhoch said within the industry there is a myth perpetuated about white people, that they will come and rescue you from poverty, a real life Pretty Woman scenario.

He said the men who come to Mombasa to prey on young girls keep that hope alive, but only as long as they are here.

"I am appalled, I am unhappy about it. That's why we are doing something about it, too," he said.

"We are making communities aware that relationships with wazungu or with any other person, as such, does not necessarily pull you out of poverty."

In 2014 The World Bank recalculated the size of the economy in Kenya and gave it middle-income status.

It has the continent's fourth biggest economy behind Nigeria, South Africa and Angola.

But the truth is, there is a pretty small middle class in this developing country.

Poverty is still a huge problem and it is one of the main drivers of underage prostitution.

Some children turn to it out of desperation.

Mother from township recounts 'don't ask, don't tell' experience
One woman the ABC spoke to in a poor township said her teenage daughters sneak out at night.

She does not know where they go, but they come home with money.

She has her suspicions but it was a "don't ask, don't tell" situation.

They are so poor she accepts the money gratefully.

Other children get pimped out by their parents, or another relative, or a criminal syndicate and have no choice in the matter.

The Kenyan government recently increased the penalty for people found guilty of defilement, the name given to the law that prohibits sex with underage children.

Penalties have also been made more severe for trafficking children, but this has done little to curb the problem.

Like a lot of social and economic problems in Africa, education seems to be the only way of reducing the problem.

But as Phoebe said, she dropped out of school to start her life as a sex worker because she thought it was cool.

Until those attitudes are changed, the crisis of underage prostitution will keep recycling itself.

TANZANIA ACID ATTACK ADVERSELY AFFECTS TOURISM

Last week Wednesday two British tourists Katie Gee and Kirstie Trup, both aged 18, were reportedly attacked with Acid by two men who were riding a motorbike as they walked through the streets of Unguja the legendary historical Stone Town in Tanzania.

Arusha City is gateway to the country's leading tourism destinations including Mount Kilimanjaro, the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park while Zanzibar is the global choice for beach tourism.

The Arusha-based Tanzania Association of Tour Operators has issued statement against the recent acid attack on two British teenage volunteers in Zanzibar, saying the incident will adversely affect tourism.

"We always market Tanzania as the 'Land of Kilimanjaro, Ngorongoro, Serengeti and Zanzibar," pointed out Mr. Mustafa Akonaay the Executive Secretary of TATO adding that the incident in which the two volunteer teachers were attacked with acid by in the isles will stain one of the industry's trademarks.

Some corrosive liquid was splashed over their faces, chests, backs and hands burning them badly. The girls, who have already been flown back to London, underwent initial treatment in Dar-es-salaam where President Jakaya Kikwete paid them a visit in hospital.

By mid this week no arrests have been made in Zanzibar with regard to the attack. Zanzibar Commissioner of police Musa Ali Musa told Radio One in an interview that a number of people had been questioned concerning the attack but still they had no suspect.

But as far as the TATO official is concerned the incident wasn't just an attack on innocent foreigners but rather some underground mechanism to sabotage the country's tourism because in the course of this year somewhat similar attacks were experienced in Arusha which is the epicenter of the travel industry.

"There have been series of attacks on church buildings, religious leaders in the Isles. Later the religious house attacks moved to Arusha where a church was bombed," said Mr. Akonaay adding that the incidents only seem to occur in tourism sites.

At the moment TATO is worried that should the United Kingdom issue a travel advisory in the wake of the acid attack, Tanzania is set to lose a lot.

Mr. Akonaay called for thorough investigations on both the Zanzibar and Arusha incidents saying they were neither religious nor politically affiliated but rather all those attacks were clearly targeting Tanzania, especially the country's fast growing tourism industry.

A statement by the British High Commissioner, Dianna Melrose dated August 14 says: "Pending police investigations, it would be unwise to leap to conclusions about the motive for the attack or what it means for foreign investors. Nevetherless, we have updated our Travel Advice to inform people of the attack and to reiterate the need for caution."

An Italian doctor working for a children's NGO was killed and three Italians injured in an armed robbery on the house they were staying in close to Kenya's Indian Ocean beach resorts, the foreign ministry said on Sunday.
Rita Fossaceca, 51, died on Saturday in the village of Mijomboni, which is situated less than 30 kilometres (20 miles) inland from the resorts of Malindi and Watamu.

The radiologist from Novara in northern Italy was in Kenya volunteering for the For Life charity organisation, which is in the process of establishing an orphanage and a clinic in Mijomboni and also works to promote alternatives to coming-of-age ceremonies involving female genital mutilation.

"My sincere condolences and thoughts go to the family of Signora Fossaceca, a woman who was loved and respected for her profound dedication and commitment to helping the weak, the sick and the women of Africa," Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni said.

Fellow volunteer Marcello Stoppa wrote on the NGO's website that: "Sometimes things happen that are inexplicable. She paid with her life for her love of children."

The injured Italians were reported to have been Fossaceca's parents and another relative. Italian media reported the doctor had been shot dead after trying to defend her mother from a machete attack.

Fossaceca had been in Kenya for only three weeks on her latest trip. In her final post on the NGO's site, she described buying a cow for the orphanage.

"She is pregnant and in three months we will have a calf and finally we will have milk for the village," she wrote.

CRIME IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM IN TANZANIA
Crime is a serious problem in Tanzania, and visitors should be alert and cautious. Street crime in Dar es Salaam is common and includes mugging, bag snatching, vehicle theft, "smash and grab" attacks on vehicles, armed robbery, burglary, and home invasions. Thieves and pickpockets steal from inattentive pedestrians and passengers on public transportation. Prowlers enter occupied and unoccupied houses, looking for open windows and doors to gain access to dwellings (and hotel rooms) to steal electronics, jewelry, and money. If you use a hotel safe, ensure it is bolted and secured to the furniture.

Firearm-related crimesare becoming more common, although criminals often use machetes and sticks. A series of robberies involving increasing levels of violence has occurred along the coast and on Zanzibar. In 2008 - 2009, we received reports of robbers holding tour buses and dive boats at gunpoint. In the spring of 2008, there were a string of armed robberies in hotels along the east coast of Ungunja (the main island) in Zanzibar.

Sexual assaults involving tourists are also a concern. Travelers should hire only legitimate tour guides, preferably arranged by a known travel agency or hotel. Be wary of “spontaneous” offers of sightseeing from new contacts and avoid being alone with “friendly” strangers who propose special, customized sightseeing trips. Practice common sense and remain vigilant regarding your surroundings. If a situation does not seem right, follow your instincts and leave the scene immediately. Travel with others when possible. If you are the victim of sexual assault, see your doctor immediately.

Muggings, Robberies, and Assaults: Pedestrians on deserted or crowded beaches, footpaths, and roads are often targeted by criminals. This is especially true on Zanzibar, in Dar es Salaam, and Arusha. Though group travel does not guarantee your safety, you should avoid traveling alone. Avoid carrying a bag, wearing flashy jewelry, or using or displaying electronics while walking in public. If you must carry a bag, hold it by the handle loosely so you can let go quickly and not be injured if someone grabs it. Do not put the strap across your chest as you can be badly injured if someone snatches the bag. Limit the amount of cash you carry to what is needed for that specific activity. Secure valuables, such as passports, jewelry, and airline tickets, in a hotel safe or other secure location. Carefully guard your camera and phone. Credit cards should only be used in reputable tourist hotels. Whereas long-term residents used to note a seasonal spike in crime (December - January), reports of robbery and violent assault now occur year-round.

HOME INVASIONS.
US ctizens residing in Arusha and Dar es Salaam report a steady increase in crimes targeting the homes of expatriates. These armed home invasions usually involve some violence and some victims have been seriously injured. U.S. citizens should ensure that homes have a safe haven, a secure area with reinforced barriers where inhabitants can retreat and remain safe if intruders enter the home. Residents in Arusha and Dar es Salaam strongly recommend retaining a professional security company with 24-hour guards and roving patrols. If you have access to a house alarm, use it. Routinely check your doors and windows to ensure they are locked and the grills are intact.

CARJACKINGS IN TANZANIA
Carjackings occur in both rural and urban areas. Visitors are advised to drive with doors locked and windows rolled up. Travelers are urged not to stop in unpopulated areas and to travel in convoys if possible. Be wary of drivers of stopped cars flagging motorist down for assistance, as this might be a ploy to rob travelers.
