SOCCER giants, Simba and Yanga, the country's envoys in next year's continental club championships, will know their preliminary round opponents, when the Confederation of African Football (CAF) hold the draw for the Interclubs competitions on December 20, this year.

The draw, which was initially scheduled for December 19, will be conducted in Cairo, Egypt, which is the headquarters of the continental football governing body.

Over 100 clubs from the 53 National Associations affiliated to CAF will be involved in the draw for the two club championships; CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup.

Premier League Champions, Simba will be the country's flag bearers in the CAF Champions League, while their archrivals, Yanga, who finished runners-up last season, are set to battle it out in the Confederation Cup.

The 2011 championships will present another opportunity for Simba and Yanga, the two most successful local clubs, to try and kill their jinx at the continental stage.

Despite of their shared, unmatched dominance in local football scene, both have struggled to duplicate that success in the continental game.

Yanga who represented the country in Champions League were sent packing by FC Lupopo of DR Congo, in the preliminary round last time round, while Simba could not make into the group stages too, after they were dumped out of the Confederation Cup with a 6-3 defeat to El-Hadoud of Egypt.

The highest level of success that Simba achieved was getting to the final of the CAF Cup in 1993, where they lost to Stella Abidjan of Ivory Coast.

It was the highest achievement on continental competitions reached by any Tanzanian team.

One of the most memorable years for the club was 2003, when they knocked off the then reigning champions Egyptian giants Zamalek on their way to qualify for the group stages of the CAF Champions League.

Yanga's best achievement was reaching the group stage of CAF Champions League in 1998.

The Jangwani Street outfit have won slightly more Tanzanian Premier League titles than Simba, however, it is the Msimbazi Street men who have faired much better on the continental stage than their archrivals The deadline for the registration of participation in the 2011 continental club championships was November 30.

TP Mazembe of DR Congo are the current champions of the CAF Champions League and Morocco's FUS Rabat for the CAF Confederation Cup.

MAINLAND's Kilimanjaro Stars and their bothers Zanzibar Heroes face an uphill task on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the Cecafa Tusker Challenge Cup, when they play Rwanda and Uganda respectively.

A win for both sides of the union today, will set up a semifinal clash of brothers from the same mother on Friday at the 60,000 seating capacity National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

Kilimanjaro Stars assistant coach, Sylvester Marsh has already predicted a tough encounter, but he is optimistic that Stars will prevail and cruise past the Amavubi come what may.

However, making it to the knock out stage of the on-going regional event was a must for the Kilimanjaro Stars, but progressing on from the knock out stage is something the home side must strategise for both on the tactical aspect and in-terms of support from the home fans. Facing Rwanda, who finished as runners-up last year, will not be an easy task for the home

boys, but something the Stars will simply have to do perfectly to progress will be to make sure they take their chances with ease.

Kilimanjaro Stars have emerged as a team that creates more scoring opportunities than any other team since the tournament kicked off on November 27, but clumsy finishing has been a major weakness.

Coach Jan Poulsen's Stars started the campaign on a wrong note losing 1-0 to Chipolopolo of Zambia, but got back to winning ways with a 3-0 demolishing of Somalia and a 2-0 victory over Burundi.

Forget the group stage and it's now a different ball game where the Stars must use all the available arsenal they got including the 12th man- the fans to be able to upstage Rwanda.

There is no better time than now for Mainlanders to reclaim this trophy they last won 16 years, when they beat Uganda Cranes by penalties in Nairobi in 1994.

It will also be the perfect Christmas present the Stars can give all Tanzanians. Looking at Poulsen's squad, although industrious Mrisho Ngasa remains the star player, he needs all the support from the other front-men as his tireless efforts are getting wasted, the final kill at goal is needed more than before.

The likes of Gaudence Mwaikimba who failed to impress in the 1-0 loss to Zambia could keep warming the bench in the crucial time, skipper Shadrack Nsajigwa who keeps driving up front must watch his runs against this tactically good Rwanda side.

This is a match Rwanda's coach Sillas Tetteh knows he must win to make his bosses back in Kigali happier especially as they use the tournament to prepare for the 2011 CHAN event in Khartoum, Sudan in February.

But having scored only two goals and conceded one in the group stage against the Stars' five goals against one, Tetteh has cause to get worried about his strikers who have totally gone to sleep.

However, although Amavubi's bluntness upfront is cause for Stars joy, the hosts should know that the Ghanaian born coach Tetteh is an experienced tactician who won the World Cup Gold with Ghana's junior side against mighty Brazil.

For Stuart Hall's Zanzibar Heroes it is definitely going to be ‘David vs Goliath' fight, facing defending champions and record winners Uganda Cranes.

However, the Heroes can build up their confidence from their recent form in the championship to deliver a bombshell to bobby Williamson side, who have proved to be not the same team that won the tournament in Nairobi last year.

The Cranes are struggling a bit in this year's championships.

ZAMBIA coach Dario Bonetti was furious towards match official following his team's 2-1 loss to Ethiopia in the Cecafa Tusker Challenge Cup quarterfinal at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday.

"It's difficult to play a match when the referee has a bad game," lamented Bonetti in a post match press conference.

Ugandan referee Ali Kalyango, who was in charge on the day, disallowed Zambia's goal after the half hour mark and reduced the Chipolopolo to ten men after Thomas Nyirenda was sent off for second bookable offence on 36th minute.

"Why did he deny us a goal in the first half," queried Bonetti adding, "he made many mistakes and they are important in the final analysis of the game. I'm sorry but the quality of officiating was poor."

Tesfaye Alebachew and Omod Okwury Omod were the heroes as the plucky Ethiopians booked their place in the last four of this year's tourney after another impressive performance. Ethiopian coach Ife Onoura was pleased with his team's continued good performances, "We were good value for our win but we made it hard for ourselves.

It was a long second half as the ten men of Zambia worked hard and for sometime we could not deal with them but that happens at times when the team is reduced to ten men. They find energy from somewhere."

"I am delighted and happy that we have made the semis, the boys have worked hard and we can now sit back and wait for our next opponents," he added.

Meanwhile, Ivory Coast head coach Koudio Georges was jubilant following his side's march into the Challenge Cup semis, thanks to a 1-0 victory over Malawi.

"We have learnt a lot from every match and now we look forward to meeting Ethiopia," he told the post match press conference. His Malawian counterpart Kinnah Phiri said the Flames were unlucky to go out of the tournament.

"We did not deserve to lose the match. But I have all respects for our opponents and those who will make the final four. It has been good experience for my players and now we're looking forward to being invited again next year," said Phiri.

Zanzibar want to play in Fifa competitions

Zanzibar has appealed to the world football governing body Fifa to admit them as an individual member so that they can participate in continental and global competitions recognised by Fifa.
Speaking to FeverPitch here yesterday, Zanzibar coach John Stewart and skipper Abdi Kassim said it was high time they played independently in Fifa competitions.
Zanzibar contributes a large fraction of players to the Tanzania national team that plays in the Nations Cup and World Cup qualifiers and only plays independently during regional events. They have even beaten their big brothers on many occasions.
"Fifa should consider admitting us as their member, because I believe we have proved that we can play against other top teams. They are supposed to make a decision in two months and I hope they would consider our plight," said Stewart.
He said: "We don't play enough international matches because we are not recognised by Fifa and no one would yearn to play us. I don't think this is fair because I feel we have the capacity of facing any team in the continent."
Skipper Abdi Kassim who scored the famous goal in Algiers that saw Tanzania tie 1-1 with Desert Warriors in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in August, wants to play for his native country in future and believes this is the right time for Zanzibar to be recognised by Fifa.
Other key players of Taifa Stars who come from Zanzibar are the no-nonsense defender Nadir ‘Cannavaro' Haroub, Abdulhalim Humuod and Suleiman Kassim.
"My dream is to play for Zanzibar in a continental or world qualifier.
"We have some of the best players turning up for Taifa Stars and given the fact that we stopped Sudan 2-0 last week we have shown that we can beat the best," Kassim said.
The Zanzibar Football Association's application for admission to Fifa was rejected since Zanzibar is not an independent state.

It was a clash worthy of a cup final, but reigning champions Uganda Cranes and Zanzibar Heroes locked horns for just the quarter-final of this year's Cecafa Tusker Cup in Dar es salaam.
Cranes scraped their way into the last four after eventually winning the entertaining tie 5-3 on post-match penalties. Underdogs Zanzibar had forced them to a 2-2 draw in regulation time.
The champions scored all their five penalties courtesy of Isaac Isinde, Sadam Ibrahim, Godfrey Walusimbi, Tony Mawejje and Emmanuel Okwi and their towering custodian Robert Odongkara blocked Zanzibar's Aggrey Morris' shot to give his side the advantage. Zanzibar's Wazir Omar, Nadir Haroub and Abdulahalim Humoud scored their spot kicks.
"The match was entertaining, both sides displayed quality football, but I am sure if we had been competing in other competitions we could have comfortably beaten Uganda today. We only assemble a team once a year to compete in the Cecafa

Senior Challenge because we are not members of Fifa," Zanzibar's assistant coach Mohamed Morocco who stood in for suspended English head coach John Stewart said.

Uganda's coach Bobby Williamson lauded his side for a good display and vowed to go all the way and lift their third trophy in a row.
"Zanzibar are no longer under dogs in this region as you have seen today. My players displayed mental toughness today and I am very proud of them.
"We are going to remain positive and our target is to win a hat trick in the competition," Williamson said.
Uganda, who finished top of group of death where they were pooled with arch rivals Kenya, Malawi and Ethiopia, entered the match without their influential captain Andrew Mweisigwa who was suspended for the match after accumulating two yellow cards in the group stages and his absence was felt at the back as his replacement Derrick Walulya found it hard to contain Zanzibar's striker Mcha Khamis.
Cranes went ahead in the 14th minute when Mike Sserumaga beat an offside trap to break the deadlock, beating the advancing Zanzibar custodian Mwadini Ali Mwadini.
Mcha Khamis levelled the scores in the 37th minute.

Taribo West, who was arguably Nigeria's most prolific defender, will be the chief guest at the Sportspersons of The Year (SOYA) Awards Friday, courtesy of SuperSport Africa.
This will be the second time a high-profile Nigerian footballer will be the chief guest at the Kenya's most competitive and prestigious sports awards, which will again take place at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre.
Dan Amokachi was the chief guest in 2008.
"Soya Awards is delighted to announce that Taribo West will be coming to Kenya for this year's awards, a sign that the annual function to reward top sportspersons, now in its seventh year, is taking its rightful place in the national and international sporting calendar," Soya Patron Paul Tergat said yesterday.

Past chief guests include the world's most decorated and all time long distance runner Haile Gebreselassie of Ethiopia, who came in 2005 and South African marathon star Hendrix Ramaala in 2006.

Capped 41 times, West, 36, was easily the most recognisable Super Eagles player with his green yellow dreadlocks popping from a clean-shaven head when the Nigerian national team was at its best.
He played in two Fifa World Cups in France (1998) and 2002 in Japan/Korea. He also won the Olympic Games gold medal in Atlanta in 1996.
Among the top European clubs he played for are Auxerre in France, Internazionale de Milano of Italy, with whom he won Uefa Cup title in 1998, and their city rivals AC Milan.
When he steps on the podium to address the auspicious occasion on Friday, Kenya's legion of football fans will be very nostalgic about the golden era of African football when it included Jay Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu and Amokachi, among others.
He retired two years ago after a brief spell with an Iranian club Paykan and a failed move to a Spanish Second Division Club Xerez CD.
Soya is supported by Safaricom, The Standard Group, National Bank of Kenya, National Social Security Fund, Deacons, Coca Cola, Emregency Plus of the Red Cross and Communications Commission of Kenya. The Ministry of sports are also partners of the event.

Kenyan midfielder McDonald Mariga enjoyed a rare 15 minutes of football on Tuesday evening after a 58-day lull punctuated by a muscle injury.

Inter Milan travelled to Werder Bremen for their final UEFA Champions League Group A game that they lost 3-0.

The midfielder has been on the sidelines for Inter since he sustained a muscle injury while featuring for Harambee Stars in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Uganda.

He replaced Thiago Motta in the 75th minute.

Already qualified for the round of 16, Inter fielded a makeshift team.

Inter finished second to Tottenham Hotspurs as coach Rafa Benitez spared several top players for the Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi this week.

It was Mariga's second champions league game in the current campaign, and fifth overall, the first having been a 90 minute won September 14 against FC Twente.

Taifa Queens stun hosts Singapore with 36-52 win

By DAILY NEWS Reporter/Agencies, 8th December 2010 @ 12:00

THE national netball team ‘Taifa Queens' emerged from their slumber to humiliate hosts Singapore 52-36 on the second day of the 2010 Six Nations Cup at Toa Payoh Indoor Sports Hall on Tuesday.

Taifa Queens launched their campaigns on Monday on a low gear, losing 33-46 to Scotland, who are the highest ranked team in the tournament at 16th. The match was at the same venue.

But the Queens were a different side on Tuesday as the hosts simply failed to match the speed, flair and intensity.

The host who started impressively after securing a 58-22 victory over India in their first match on Monday, found the going tough in their second match as Tanzanian ladies were too much for Singapore to handle with Mwanaidi Hassan, Tanzania's 1.93 metre Goal Shooter, causing Singapore all kinds of trouble as she converted 38 of her 41 shots.

When Singapore did manage to intercept the ball in their own third, the Africans forced them into turnovers.

It also did not help that the host made plenty of sloppy passes throughout the match.

It was only in the fourth quarter that Singapore managed to get settled and started imposing themselves on the visitors to win the last quarter 16-14.

"I thought we were very smart and worked the ball well – we let it go when we needed to and played it when we needed to. This let us put together four very solid quarters.

Defensively, we knew Singapore are a very fast side so we put on a very strong defensive pressure to slow them down," said Tanzania's coach, Simone McKinnis.

When asked if she felt that height was a very big factor in the match today, she commented, "Sure, there is a height advantage, but you're only as good when the team make use of that advantage.

My team maintained their intensity, focus and standard of play throughout the match and to me it is really important."

"I thought we made a lot of errors and were very hesitant with the ball," analyzed Kate Carpenter, Singapore's coach.

"We created turnovers but were unable to put ourselves into an area (to score) and we didn't get a lot of attempts.

I thought Tanzania were the better side and they were deserving the outcome." "Sure, it is really hard to contain a tall shooter, but we also turned over the ball a lot and allowed them to get into positions to score.

We need to toughen up and get amongst it," said the Singapore coach who also mentioned that their next opponents, Namibia, play a similar style to Tanzania. Taifa Queens were set to play India late on Wednesday.
