Egypt's Mido leaves Ajax at his own request

Mido's second spell with the Dutch giants lasted only four months

Egypt striker Ahmed 'Mido' Hossam has left Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam after just four months at the club.
The 27-year-old's request to leave the Dutch outfit was approved by Ajax officials on Tuesday.
Mido rejoined Ajax in September on a one-year loan deal under then-coach Martin Jol.
But Jol resigned in December and has since been replaced by Frank de Boer, with the change of coach leading to the departure of the Pharoahs star.
"It's over now. I agreed with Ajax's officials to annul my deal," said Mido, who also played for Ajax between 2001 and 2003.
He played 11 matches and scored four goals since rejoining the club in September, but the presence of Mounir El Hamdaoui and Luis Suarez meant he was mainly used as a substitute.
The striker insists he will stay in Europe to continue his career despite reported interest from one of his former clubs, Zamalek of Egypt.
His agents say they are in talks with Deportivo La Coruna over a permanent move to the Spanish side.
"Now I'm free to join any other club in the current winter transfer window," the former Middlesbrough player added.
"I have received several offers from Spain and England that I'm now considering."
Mido has featured for 10 different clubs since starting his career with Zamalek, including the likes of Marseille, Celta Vigo, Roma, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham.

Togo's Razak Boukari signs for Rennes from Lens

Razak Boukari has joined Rennes on a four-and-a-half year deal

Togo international striker Razak Boukari has moved to Rennes from his French club side Lens.
Rennes are currently second in the Ligue 1 table, behind leaders Lille.
Boukari, who moved to Lens in 2006 from a lower league French club side, has signed a four-and-a-half year deal with the Brittany-based outfit.
"I am very happy to have signed for Rennes - I had made up my mind a long time ago [to come here]", the striker said.
"A lot of good players have played here in the past [and] I really hope I'm going to grow here.
"This year, the team is still strong and plays good football. I can bring my skills and quickly adapt to their system."

Misri yaitega CECAFA

Ancelotti feels pressure after defeat

Updated Jan 5, 2011 8:23 PM ET
Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti admitted he felt "under pressure" after his team slid to a 1-0 defeat at Wolves.

But the former AC Milan coach believes he remains secure in his post with the Blues, who stand nine points behind Barclays Premier League leaders Manchester United, having also played a game more.
"Obviously I am under pressure," he said on BBC Radio Five Live.
Ancelotti clarified: "My position is solid at this moment. I'm under pressure because the team didn't reach the result we wanted."
His team have taken just 10 points from their last 11 matches, to fall from top spot in the table down to fifth place.
Tottenham's defeat at Everton at least kept Chelsea just a point off fourth place.
"I think the right way is to work hard," said Ancelotti, as he considered a way to improve the team's fortunes.
"We are working hard, at this moment it is not enough."

Galaxy now 'open' to Beckham move

After initially being in the dark about David Beckham's plans to go back to Europe on another loan move, the Los Angeles Galaxy appear ready to consider letting the English star go for a third loan deal in three years for the right price.
According to Sky Sports, the Los Angeles Galaxy is open to the idea of sending Beckham on a short-term loan deal, with Tottenham looking like the most likely destination for the 35-year-old midfielder.

TRANSFER SPECIAL

Galaxy officials had no new information on a potential Beckham loan when reached on Wednesday.
The Galaxy initially sounded against the idea of sending Beckham out on loan for the third straight spring, an understandable stance given the fact that Beckham suffered a torn achilles tendon while on loan with AC Milan last year. The club's tune appears to have changed, with money looking to be the determining factor in any potential move.
Several clubs have been reported to have interest in Beckham, but Tottenham has emerged as the most likely destination for Beckham, who is believed to prefer joining a London club.
If Beckham is to join Tottenham, the real question is for how long. Spurs manager Harry Redknapp was recently quoted as saying he would only be interested in bringing Beckham on loan if it were for the remainder of the Premier League season. That would force Beckham to miss the first half of the Major League Soccer season, which begins in early March.
Beckham, who is entering the final year of a five-year contract with the Galaxy, has managed just 48 regular season appearances for the Galaxy since joining the club in 2007. A knee injury cut short his first season with the club, while loans to AC Milan cut into his past two seasons. Perhaps a more damning stat regarding Beckham's contributions for Los Angeles is that he has played more combined matches for AC Milan and England over the past two years than he has for the Galaxy.
As has been the case the past two years, Beckham has cited a desire to remain fit enough for consideration for the England national team as the motivation behind these loan moves. That explanation has done little to stop a wave of criticism in the United States aimed at Beckham's latest loan request.

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP)

Chile coach Marcelo Bielsa has called up a team of young players and substitutes for an international football friendly on Jan. 22 against the United States in Los Angeles.
Bielsa's future with the Chile team is unclear. He stepped down in November after Jorge Segovia was elected president of the national federation, saying he could not work for the Spanish businessman.
Bielsa was hired by the outgoing president Harold Mayne-Nicholls. Segovia's election was annulled several weeks afterward with a new ballot set for Jan. 7.
The Argentina-born Bielsa has been urged to stay on by top Chilean officials, at least until the Copa America in six months, but he has not made his plans clear.

Spurs' Levy in LA to seal Beckham deal

Published 23:20 05/01/11 By John Cross

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy was last night thrashing out a deal with LA Galaxy to complete the signing of David Beckham.
The US club have given the green light for Beckham to go out on loan and Spurs yesterday began negotiations over the move.
Levy must agree to pay Beckham's basic £80,000-a-week wages in his Galaxy contract and cover insurance costs.
Galaxy also want comprehensive cover after Beckham suffered a serious Achilles injury while at AC Milan last year.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp met with Levy and other board members before Tottenham's game at Everton last night and they are keen to reach an agreement.
Tottenham are *understood to be in pole position to complete the deal with Beckham's advisers hoping to have it tied down by the end of the week.
But if the deal with Spurs falls through, Mirror Sport can reveal that West Ham are already lined up to step in with a package.
Beckham, 35, is only interested in a move back to England as his wife and three children prepare to move over from the US.
And his priority is to join a London club so he can be near his main family home in Hertfordshire. That is one of the main reasons why Tottenham appeals along with pushing for the title and the chance to put himself back in contention for an England recall.
It means a move abroad is a non-starter despite interest from foreign clubs and if Tottenham falls down then Chelsea may still be sounded out.
Beckham has already seen Manchester United rule out an emotional reunion while Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says he already has too many players in that position.
Liverpool, Manchester City and Everton have also been ruled out because of Beckham's affection for his beloved United.
The former England captain will also look to train with an English club if a loan deal does not happen so that he can improve his match fitness and sharpness ready for when the MLS season starts again.
LA Galaxy's first game of the season is on March 15 against the Seattle Sounders but it may be that they allow him to stay on a short while longer.
But Beckham's first priority is Tottenham and he is desperate to play an active part in their season to help Redknapp push for the Premier League and Champions League.
At the same time it would be a huge coup for Tottenham as well as a chance for Beckham to improve his match fitness and push his England claims to Fabio Capello.

Report: Ronaldinho eyes Gremio switch

SAO PAULO (AP)

Ronaldinho is willing to lower his salary to play for his native Gremio, but the club's offer still isn't good enough to please AC Milan, a Brazilian website reported Wednesday.
Gremio is among four clubs trying to sign the former two-time FIFA player of the year. Brazilian clubs Flamengo and Palmeiras and English side Blackburn also have made offers to acquire Ronaldinho.

TRANSFER SPECIAL

Keep up with all the biggest moves around the globe with our 2011 January transfer gallery.

The playmaker said his first choice would be former club Gremio, where he started his career as a youngster in 1998.
"If it was up to me, I would already be wearing Gremio's jersey, even making less money," Ronaldinho was quoted as saying by the GloboEsporte.com site on Wednesday. "The problem is not the offer (the clubs) made me, but it's what Milan is asking for. No one has gotten close."
Milan reportedly wanted nearly ?8 million ($10.6 million) to release Ronaldinho, but could be willing to release the player to avoid having to keep paying his high salary.
Ronaldinho, who had been playing sporadically with the Italian club and had been expressing his desire to return to Brazil, was reportedly authorized to leave the team's training camp and travel to Brazil after New Year's Eve.
His brother and agent, Roberto Assis, has been analyzing the clubs' offers and negotiating with AC Milan for the past few days in Brazil.
He was meeting with Gremio officials on Wednesday to discuss the team's offer again, but Flamengo and Palmeiras directors both said they remained optimistic.
Milan vice president Adriano Galliani is in Brazil and reportedly said the offer from Luiz Felipe Scolari's Palmeiras was the best financially, but Palmeiras representative Roberto Tadeu told ESPN Brasil that in the end it would come down to Ronaldinho's choice.
Blackburn said Tuesday it was attempting to sign Ronaldinho, but manager Steve Kean acknowledged it was unlikely the Brazilian star would pick the Premier League club.
Ronaldinho won consecutive FIFA World Player of the Year awards in 2004 and '05 while with Barcelona and led the Spanish club to the Champions League title in 2006. He also helped Brazil win the 2002 World Cup, under Scolari.

Clot Carson facing axe for Baggies cup tie

West Brom captain Scott Carson faces the axe this weekend after his latest clanger.
Keeper Carson famously blundered on his international debut against Croatia at Wembley as England failed to make Euro 2008. And he made his latest howler in goal in a 3-0 defeat to Fulham as Albion dropped nearer the relegation zone.
His flap allowed Simon Davies' long-range shot to find the net for the opening goal.
Now Carson, 25, is likely to lose his place to summer signing Boaz Myhill in Saturday's FA Cup third round trip to Reading.

"He is disappointed," said manager Roberto Di Matteo. "He knows he should have done better there. He is big enough to realise that."
Myhill, 28, has only figured in Carling Cup action since his summer switch from Hull. But a solid display this weekend could see him keep the No.1 spot against Blackpool in the Premier League on January 15.
Meanwhile, Baggies defender Gianni Zuiverloon admits they must end their set-piece sloppiness if they are to stay in the Premier League.
West Brom conceded another two goals from corners at Craven Cottage to slip below Fulham in the relegation battle.
Di Matteo's side have now lost five consecutive matches while conceding a series of soft goals from set plays.
Although they fielded a makeshift defence in which full-back Zuiverloon was deployed as a centre-back after being recalled from a loan spell at Ipswich, the Dutchman admitted they must tighten up quickly.
"It was very disappointing because Fulham and West Brom are very close to each other in the table, especially as they scored two goals from set-pieces," he said.
"That is why it is very disappointing. We didn't pay full attention to their men from the corners, they were totally free, so we didn't do well.
"I think we need to be more clinical in front of goal and sharper with defensive stuff. We had a couple of good chances in the first half and I think if you score one of those it's a totally different game."
Zuiverloon was also unhappy with a John Pantsil challenge on Marek Cech which deprived the Baggies of another defender.
"It was a very nasty tackle, right on his shin. It could have broken his leg," he added. "I think it was something we were very mad about. It was right in front of the linesman and I think he should have seen it."

Roma captain Francesco Totti admits his side will have their work cut out to wipe out AC Milan's seven-point advantage at the top of Serie A.
The Eternal City giants host Catania on Thursday looking to keep up the pressure on the leaders.
"Seven points is a big margin," Totti said. "But there are still many games left to play and we will continue to battle for the scudetto."

Roma have reason to be confident following their 1-0 win at Milan in their last game before the winter break.
The result lifted the Giallorossi to fifth in the standings.
Roma coach Claudio Ranieri hopes his team can start the new year on the right foot. Nine years have passed since Roma last won their first game of the year and Ranieri has warned his players to expect a battle against Catania.
"It's going to be a difficult game," he said. "Catania will put up many hurdles but we have to win.
"We have to start the year well and we must get points this month in order to have a say in the league."
Roma are hoping midfielder Daniele De Rossi can recover from flu in time to play.
Totti is expected to lead Roma's attack alongside top-scorer Marco Borriello.
Catania travel to the Stadio Olimpico looking for their first win on the road in 11 months.
The Sicilian outfit lie 12th in the standings thanks to their good performances at home this season, where they have lost just once.
With just three points collected on the road this term, Catania coach Marco Giampaolo knows his team must improve that record.
"We must continue to improve," he said. "It's imperative that we start winning on the road.
"We need to play better and show our quality away from home."
Victory tomorrow would be a big boost in confidence for Catania ahead of their home game against Inter Milan on Sunday.

Manchester City striker Roque Santa Cruz claims he is now back in talks with Lazio after previously snubbing a loan move to the Italian club.
Santa Cruz is expected to leave City during the January transfer window after making just one substitute's appearance in the Premier League this season.

A clutch of clubs are understood to be keen to keep the Paraguayan in England with former club Blackburn and Fulham among those linked.
However, there is also interest in the ex-Bayern Munich forward from Germany and Italy, with Lazio particularly keen on a deal.
They revealed last week that the 29-year-old had turned down a loan move to Stadio Olimpico as he only wants to leave City on a permanent basis.
It now appears as though Lazio are ready to offer Santa Cruz a full-time deal after the player suggested he "can't wait" to join the Serie A side.
Quoted in La Repubblica, Santa Cruz said: "I am talking to Lazio and I can't wait to land in Italy and wear the blue and white shirt."

Vermaelen fitness key for Wenger

Updated Jan 5, 2011 11:10 AM ET
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed Thomas Vermaelen's fitness will determine his transfer policy in the January window.
Centre-back Vermaelen has been out with an Achilles injury since last August but is expected to be back by the end of this month. However if the Belgian's comeback is delayed Wenger will dip into the transfer market to cover his back four.

"Midfield and up front, no, but at the back, it just depends on [Thomas] Vermaelen," said Wenger.
"I am just waiting to know more about him, and then at the end of January will have to make a decision."
Title rivals Manchester City are set to add the £27million purchase of Edin Dzeko from Wolfsburg to what has been an unprecedented level of investment seen at any English top-flight club since Sheikh Mansour took over at Eastlands in 2008.
Wenger, though, insisted other teams can have no complaints as they look to get success the best way they can.
"What is fantastic in football is there is no given formula," the Arsenal manager said.
"I personally am a big fan of the way we do it, so I try to be successful with the way we do it.
"You can also do it the way Inter [Milan] do, or Manchester City do - they buy the best players in the world, and it works as well.
"What I want to show is it works our way as well."
Wenger added: "It does not annoy me [the other way] as long as they respect the rules.
"At the moment, the rules are like that and they respect them, so you cannot fault them.
"It is supposed to change, then we will see."
Meanwhile, Wenger has called on Arsenal to start building the momentum which can drive them to the title with victory over Manchester City.
The Gunners have so far enjoyed a decent return from their Christmas fixtures, beating Chelsea on December 27, before drawing at Wigan and then seeing off Birmingham 3-0 at St Andrew's on New Year's Day.
Although Arsenal hold a match in hand on City, whom they trail by two points, they will have played one more than leaders Manchester United by full-time tonight when victory could move them back to within two of the top.
TRANSFER SPECIAL

Given the likes of Chelsea and Tottenham are also within striking distance, Wenger knows full well it will be the team which is strongest from here on in who are set to be at the summit the only time it really matters on May 22.
"There are five teams in the fight. Some teams have a bit more belief than others, but that can change very quickly. Overall it promises to be a very interesting sprint," Wenger said.
"You always have a team after Christmas who finds a momentum and this team will win the championship."
The Arsenal manager is happy enough with his team's current form, but accepts things could have been even better.

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson refused to answer questions about his future after the Reds slipped to an embarrassing 3-1 defeat at Blackburn.
Two goals from Benjani Mwaruwari, who had not started since November 6 and scored once in 12 previous appearances, and Martin Olsson condemned the Reds to a ninth Premier League defeat of the season despite an 80th-minute consolation from Steven Gerrard, who missed a late penalty.

The result seems likely to hasten the end of his six-month reign at Anfield, with owners New England Sports Ventures having already begun their search for a replacement.
Hodgson answered just three questions in his post-match press conference, which uncharacteristically for him lasted just over two minutes, and as soon as the subject of his position was broached proceedings were brought to an abrupt halt.
"I am not prepared to talk about that because obviously I am depressed enough with the performance and the result," said the 63-year-old.
"I have no comments to make and I have no intention to answer any questions on the subject."
Asked about his feelings after the defeat Hodgson said: "Dejection, bitter disappointment, frustration.
"I am very disappointed for the fans who gave us good support and saw the team concede the goals we did.
"I thought in the second half we did well to retrieve a seemingly hopeless situation and get back on track and had Steven's penalty gone in who knows, we may have made the last five minutes more exciting.

"Unfortunately when you are Liverpool and you lose away to Blackburn there is nothing that can be said which will put a positive slant or make the situation look any brighter.
"As far as I am concerned it is a really bad day and there is not much more I can say other than, to the fans, that anything they are feeling tonight I can assure them the feeling is equally as bad and equally as depressed in the dressing room.
"It was a performance anything other than the performance we wanted to give."
Rovers boss Steve Kean, who marked his first home victory since taking over from the sacked Sam Allardyce last month in some style, felt he could not really offer Hodgson any sympathy.
"Roy is a great coach and manager but we can only look after what we can do, which is winning games to try to move us up the league," he said.
Kean, who was missing eight first-team members, paid tribute to the players he had available.
"I thought we were tremendous," he added. "We let them back into the game and it was a bit nervy when we gave them the penalty but overall, on the balance of play, we were worthy of the three points.
"It was all about the togetherness; there is a tight group and we were down to the bare bones and that is how you show team spirit.
"I don't think it is anything about me, it is about the team and showing what we are as a club and I am really proud of the lads."

Ancelotti: I'm still the right man

Updated Jan 6, 2011 4:36 AM ET
Carlo Ancelotti admits Chelsea are "not good enough" at the moment, but believes they have the 'character' to recover from defeat at Wolves.
The Blues went down 1-0 to Wolves at Molineux on Wednesday night, Jose Bosingwa's own goal after five minutes deciding the contest, as their faint Premier League title hopes all but disappeared.

The defeat made it one win from their last nine league games for Chelsea, who are nine points behind leaders Manchester United having played a game more.
The Londoners missed several decent chances and hit the post, through Didier Drogba, but stubborn Wolves were good value for their hard-fought win.
Chelsea are in their worst run of form since the 1995-96 season and Ancelotti, who maintains he does not fear for his job, is aware better is expected and demanded.
"I think it's obvious we are not good enough in this moment," he said. "But the team has the skill, the ability, the character, the personality to move on. It's important to stay compact, to stay together and to work hard for each other."
Asked if he was confident he was the right man for the job, the Italian added: "Yes, I know this team very well and I'm sure than this moment will change and we will be able to fight for everything this season."
The former AC Milan boss admitted the decision over his future could be taken out of his hands, although he does not have a meeting planned with owner Roman Abramovich.

"It's not my decision I hope I can continue this job, because I would like to stay here and I have a good relationship with the players and with the club," he said.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy praised the effort of his players as they recorded a win which took them out of the bottom three.
"For effort and endeavour they never leave a drop on the pitch," he said. "They give me everything, for which I'm hugely thankful and proud of.
"We sometimes lack a bit of quality and sometimes make mistakes - and that's me included - but as a unit they're fabulous in terms of what they give me.
"We played 4-4-2 against the much-lauded 4-4-3 and I asked them to do certain things. You can ask them, but it's the players who deserve the credit and the plaudits for doing it. They have to work blooming hard to play that way and they did."

Valencia out to pip Bolton to Vela signing

Spanish giants Valencia have made a move to sign Arsenal's Mexican forward Carlos Vela.
Valencia vice-president Javier Gomez and sporting director Braulio Vazquez have flown into London to try and snatch Vela from under Bolton's noses.
Bolton boss Owen Coyle remains keen to snap up the 21-year-old on loan until the end of the season, but Arsenal and Vela must now decide where his career is going.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger insists Vela still has a future at The Emirates, despite struggling to break into the first team.

Wenger had been keen on loaning out Vela to another Premier League club to help toughen him up and get him ready to challenge for a regular place.
Jack Wilshere, 19, had a successful loan spell under Coyle at Bolton last season and Wenger believes that a similar move would be a good opportunity for Vela.
Arsenal may also be keen to maintain good relations with Bolton as they are big admirers of their England defender Gary Cahill and are monitoring his progress with a view to making a move either in January or next summer.
However, Valencia are ready to offer Vela a loan deal with a £2m option to sign him permanently in the summer and they are keen to thrash out a deal with Arsenal by next Monday.
Vela had two loan spells in Spain earlier in his career, at Salamanca and Osasuna, to help his work permit application and now faces a big decision over his future.
His agent, Eduardo Hernandez, told a Spanish newspaper: "Nothing has been decided. I'm going to London this week to resolve the case. We will explore all options available to him, and when I say all I mean everything.
"Carlos has good memories of Spanish football and it's flattering that a club like Valencia is interested. We will analyse the situation."

Second-placed City - who are expected to shortly complete the £27million signing of striker Edin Dzeko from Wolfsburg - failed to muster a single shot on target, missing injured frontline duo David Silva and Mario Balotelli.

Arsenal remain in third place, two points behind City, with a match in hand, and four adrift of leaders Manchester United, who have played a match less.
The Gunners twice hit the woodwork in the first half through Robin van Persie and Cesc Fabregas, with England keeper Joe Hart then saving superbly from the Dutchman's 25-yard drive on the hour.
Both sides finished with 10 men after full-backs Pablo Zabaleta and Bacary Sagna were shown straight red cards by referee Mike Jones for a needless clash on the far touchline.
City drew plenty of criticism both from the television pundits for the live TV match and also the Emirates Stadium faithful.
Mancini, though, was not concerned by the chants of 'boring, boring City'.
"It is not important for me," the Italian said. "If one team plays well, it can happen that you must defend.
"I prefer boo in the end and to go home with one point than with three goals in our net.

"When you play here against Arsenal, it could be that Arsenal play better than you and you might defend, and this is football.
"Not all the teams can play like Arsenal.
"I think also that Arsenal won some games that they didn't deserve to win, maybe.
"We were lucky in the first 25 minutes when Arsenal have four or five chances to score but after, I think we defended very well.
"I think defensively we played well, offensively so-so but after four games in 10 days, this can be."
Mancini continued: "Arsenal is a good team, they play football very well.
"It's the same when you play against Barcelona, you play in Barca, you must defend very well if you don't want to lose the game.
"I think that if we had Silva, Balotelli probably it might have been a different game."
Mancini believed referee Jones could have shown restraint rather than go straight for his red cards.
"At the end of the game the players are tired and ref must understand that. Two yellow cards were enough, a red card is so much," the City boss said.
United are now very much in the driving seat, but Mancini feels the title race is far from over.
He said: "We are in a good position, like Arsenal and Manchester United. The season is very long.
"Also, although Chelsea and Tottenham both lost, I think they can still arrive on the top."

City boss Mancini confirmed on Tuesday that the club had agreed a fee, reportedly in the region of £27million, for Dzeko.
The Bosnia international is now expected to travel to England on Wednesday from Spain where he has been taking part in Wolfsburg's winter training camp.
He will then undergo a medical as he closes in on finalising his move to Eastlands and he could be a City player before the weekend's FA Cup third round tie against Leicester City.
The 24-year-old has been tracked by many of Europe's biggest clubs over the past couple of seasons after proving to be a potent goalscorer at Wolfsburg.
Dzeko has been backed to be a success in the Premier League by Wolfsburg coach Steve McClaren and he is primed to become City's latest big-money acquisition.
His arrival will likely lead to players leaving the club, with strike duo Emmanuel Adebayor and Roque Santa Cruz both linked with moves away this month.
