Idris Elba's No Good Deed crowns US box office

_77589742_481952823.jpg

Idris Elba is to voice the part of Shere Khan in The Jungle Book, due out next year

Thriller No Good Deed, starring British actor Idris Elda, has ended the four-week reign of Guardians of the Galaxy at the top of the US box office.
The film, in which Elba plays an escaped convict, made $24.5m (£15m) on its debut, almost double its budget.
Feel-good release Dolphin Tale 2 entered the chart at two, while sci-fi caper Guardians slipped to third.
Guardians is the biggest film of the year so far in North America, taking more than $300m (£184.7m).
The Marvel release becomes the first film of the year to pass that milestone, while its box office takings around the world have reached the $600m (£370m) mark.
Another notable new entry in the rundown is The Drop, starring the late James Gandolfini and British actor Tom Hardy, which landed in sixth spot after opening in a limited number of cinemas.
No Good Deed, which co-stars Taraji P Henson as a woman terrorised by Elba's character, was hailed as a success by makers Sony, who marketed the film heavily prior to release.
"It's a movie that we really loved and felt that it was going to win," said Rory Bauer, the company's head of distribution.
He praised the leading pair's fantastic chemistry for making it a box office draw.
Box office analyst Paul Degaradebian said the film is the first post-summer release to make an impression, just a week after the slowest weekend of the year so far.
Overall ticket receipts were down 23% on the same weekend of 2013.
The film chart is rejuvenated after last weekend, when there was no new release inside the top 10.
Elba is best known for his portrayal of Nelson Mandela in Long Walk to Freedom, and playing the lead role as maverick police detective John Luther on BBC TV, which earned him a Golden Globe award in 2010

Weekend Report: 'The Equalizer' Scores Fourth-Highest September Debut Ever

September 28, 2014

Featuring superstar Denzel Washington operating well within his wheelhouse, R-rated action movie The Equalizer had one of the biggest September openings ever this weekend.

Meanwhile, The Boxtrolls had an above-average debut for a stop-motion animated movie, though it still wound up slightly behind The Maze Runner's second weekend.

Playing at 3,236 theaters, The Equalizer opened to an estimated $35 million this weekend. That ranks fourth all-time in September behind Hotel Transylvania, Insidious Chapter 2 and Sweet Home Alabama. Among Denzel's movies, The Equalizer's debut ranks third behind American Gangster and Safe House.

Lots of factors contributed to this strong debut-a well-managed marketing effort, outreach to Eminem's massive fanbase, etc.-though the real key to the movie's success is the name above the title. Denzel Washington is one of the few bonafide movie stars at the domestic box office; excluding The Great Debaters (in which he played a supporting role), The Equalizer is the 12th-straight Denzel movie to open north of $20 million. Ten of those 12 are rated R, which makes this accomplishment even more impressive.

As a retired intelligence officer exacting vengeance on some Russian gangsters, Denzel's role in The Equalizer fit perfectly in to the butt-kicking brand he's been cultivating over the past decade. His legion of fans rushed out to see the movie, and seem to be generally pleased with the results: the movie garnered an "A-" CinemaScore, which suggests good word-of-mouth.

The movie's audience was split evenly between men (52 percent) and women, and skewed older (65 percent over the age of 30). Add in the positive responses the movie has been receiving, and this will almost certainly play well in the coming weeks. A final tally north of $100 million is likely.

Another hit from Ben Affleck

'Gone Girl' bolts to top of box office

Gone Girl has found itself atop the weekend box office.
The psychological thriller made off with $38 million, according to studio estimates from box-office tracking firm Rentrak, narrowly beating horror newcomer Annabelle as the fall movie season gets off to a robust start.
Based on the best-selling book by Gillian Flynn, Gone Girl stars Ben Affleck as a man whose wife (Rosamund Pike) goes missing on their fifth anniversary, turning him into a possible murder suspect. The audience skewed 60% female and 40% male for the R-rated film, with 75% of the audience over age 25, according to Rentrak and exit-polling service PostTrak.
The toxic-marriage drama scored well with critics, who awarded it an 87% positive rating on RottenTomatoes.com. USA TODAY's Claudia Puig gave it four out of four stars, calling it a "top-notch film adaptation ... (that) will leave you breathless and haunted."

USA Today Movie Critic Claudia Puig discusses "Gone Girl" and tells you whether to "Catch It," "Rent It," or "Skip It" in this week's edition of The Screening Room.

Audiences embraced the darkly comic film even more so, giving it a 92% approval rating on the survey site, no doubt boosted by an underserved adult crowd.
"The summer is all about the big blockbusters chasing the young audience," says Rentrak's Paul Dergarabedian. "People know when you go to see this movie, you're going to see something of quality. This is the kind of film that has long-term playability."

New movie ‘Gone Girl' explores a theme that became a hot topic in writer Gillian Flynn's bestselling book: The unrealistically perfect "Cool Girl." USA TODAY's Donna Freydkin tells Carly Mallenbaum about what it means to be this "Cool Girl."

It was a career-best opening for director David Fincher, surpassing the $30 million bow of 2003's Panic Room, according to Box Office Mojo. Although adult dramas tend to have modest debuts, the prolific director's films have demonstrated immense staying power: The Social Network opened with $22.5 million in 2010 on its way to $97 million, while his last foray into popular literature, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, inked a $12.8 million start in 2011, earning $103 million total.
Girl also marked Affleck's highest debut since superhero misfire Daredevil opened to $40 million in 2003, tallying $102 million. His biggest success since has been his own Oscar-winning Argo, which launched with $19.5 million in 2012, netting $136 million.
Trailing Girl by a hair is the R-rated Annabelle, which landed at No. 2 with $37.2 million. A prequel to last summer's scary success The Conjuring, the fright film about a haunted doll stars Annabelle Wallis and Alfre Woodard, and has skewed toward younger viewers. Fifty-nine percent of the audience was under 25, with 55% of the audience female and 45% male, PostTrak says.
Although its reception is nothing to scream about - 31% positive critical reviews and 54% audience approval on Rotten Tomatoes - Annabelle handily recouped its lean $6.5 million budget.

USA Today Movie Critic Claudia Puig discusses "Annabelle" and tells you whether to "Catch It," "Rent It," or "Skip It" in this week's edition of The Screening Room.

As for the other new releases, Rapture movie Left Behind, starring Nicolas Cage, managed $6.9 million in just over 1,800 theaters for sixth place - a respectable tally, given its 2% critical rating on RottenTomatoes.com. And with a 61% audience approval rating, the Christian-leaning apocalyptic flick could earn back its $16 million budget.

Last week's box-office champ The Equalizer, starring Denzel Washington, fell to third with $19 million, while animated feature [IFinal figures are expected Monday.
