Developing Your Spiritual Will
© 2004 Corinne McLaughlin and Gordon Davidson

What is the will? The will is the directive and regulatory function in your life; it balances and constructively utilizes all your energies. On a deeper level, will is related to the life principle – it brings life to an individual or an organization. On a deeper metaphysical level, it is synonymous with the breath. Will is also a clarifying, purifying energy, needed to destroy old forms before new forms can be built.

The will is anchored in two places in your body. The lower will is anchored in what’s called your root chakra, at the base of the spine, where it expresses as your will to live or survive. The higher will is anchored in your crown chakra, at the top of your head, where it expresses as the spiritual will. “The right use of the will is the steady effort to stand in spiritual being,” according to the Yoga Sutras by Patanjali.

The aspects of will are dynamic energy, persistence, determination, and one-pointedness. To be effective, the will also has to be skillful, not just powerful. When rightly used, will is expressed with love and understanding and is dedicated to the purposes of Light. It is used to destroy all that hinders the free flow of human life. The use of pure will is only possible for a coordinated thinker.

People with strong personal wills are often only concerned with their own personal gain; they may lack love or the will-to-good. Other people may have love, but lack a strong will and or have little intelligence. There are many who love humanity, but have little will and are too weak, fearful or lazy, and therefore ineffective. Many good spiritual people say they want to surrender their will to God, but they have no will to surrender. We have to develop a strong will, and then a skillful will (to be effective), and finally a good will.

Stages of Developing the Will

Personal Will: The first step in developing the spiritual will is strengthening your personal will power through discipline and focus. You must know first where you want to go and what’s important to you. You need to create higher goals and make commitments to them. Focus your energy and stay one-pointed, rather than being distracted by too many things.

You can strengthen your will by the practice of creating physical challenges to test yourself and overcoming them, such as walking several miles a day. You can practice overcoming emotional challenges, such as doing something you are frightened of. You can practice overcoming mental challenges, such as reading a difficult book. You can learn to take risks and enjoy challenges to see what you are truly capable of.

Also helpful is practicing perseverance in small things, finishing what you start and bringing it to fruition--or not starting it in the first place. When you promise something--do it--regardless of the personal cost. Another great practice for strengthening your will power is taking a stand on your values, standing up for what you believe, speaking up and being heard, and challenging those who disagree with you. Taking initiative, courage and daring, are key for strengthening your will.

Another helpful practice is to make a list of all painful things and loss of opportunities that can result from the lack of a strong will; then list all the benefits to you of a strong will. Then visualize yourself with a strong and skillful will; see yourself acting with courage, determination, and discipline in specific activities.

You can practice using the will to transform yourself by identifying a personality pattern you seek to change, identifying its opposite virtue, and then releasing the old pattern and affirming the new one.

The practice of meditation also organizes the mental body, which will then allow you to use willpower.

Goodwill: The next step is developing unselfish purpose, a benevolent disposition towards others and the good of all life. Goodwill expresses compassion, generosity and forgiveness, and it nourishes the spirit of understanding which fosters cooperation. Goodwill is identifying yourself with another person or with something greater than yourself, a larger purpose. It is the obedience of your personal will to higher feelings such as altruistic love. Goodwill can function as a harmonizing energy and a saving force.

Goodwill is our first attempt to express the love of God. It can be an atmospheric conditioner, setting a positive vibrational field for accomplishing constructive goals. It can create a pathway between higher spiritual realities and human life, building an inlet for the inflow of transformative, spiritual energies.

Goodwill builds right human relations, for when goodwill controls your mental, emotional and physical bodies, you come into right relationship with others. It is a code of action which provides a guide for conduct in a wide variety of situations leading you towards selflessness and being.

The Will-to-Good: The next step is an awakening of the spiritual will, or will of the soul, which takes possession of your personal will and gradually transforms it. It is an alignment process, where you recognize the Divine Plan, the higher plan for humanity, and learn to embody it. You constantly work to expand your capacity to identify with a larger purpose. This is only possible if the focus of your life is in the mental, rather than the emotional, nature.

The will-to-good leads to a dynamic, powerful and effective focus of service in your life. It works with the process of evolution and initiation, and with the ultimate Purpose of life. When you transmit the will-to-good to others, it can stimulate goodwill in them.

A good seed thought to meditate on is: “The will-to-good of the world knowers is the magnetic seed of the future.”

Embodying God’s Will: This is the final step when you renounce your personal will and become a stream of Universal will or Divine will. This will is a synthesis of the spiritual will, the will of the human soul and personal or self-will. Your individual will is then endowed with a new power, rather than being annihilated or diminished, and is transfigured by submitting to Divine will and merging with it.

This results in clear intention--a state of mind with a great tension ready to be released to accomplish an important labor. It also results in determination--an attitude that never gives up until the Divine Plan is fulfilled. Obstacles only increase the inner tension. Persistence is another result, based on continuous advancement and labor to achieve the goal and the Plan.

To strengthen your alignment with Universal will, you can use the following affirmation: “In the center of the Will of God I stand. Naught shall deflect my will from His. I implement that Will by love, and turn to the field of service.”

Spiritual Power, Occult Power And Will Power

Spiritual power is vastness. Occult power is swiftness. Will power is readiness.

Spiritual power says to the seeker, "Eternity is at your disposal." Occult power says to the seeker, "Here, here and now." Will power says to spiritual power and occult power, "We are friends. Both of you are perfectly right; therefore, I wish to help you, serve you, manifest you and fulfil you in your own way."

Spiritual power is the sea. Occult power is the river. Will power is the current of the river and the tranquillity of the sea.

Spiritual power is self-awareness. Occult power is self-confidence. Will power is self-experience.

Slowly, steadily and unerringly the spiritual power within us grows until eventually it reaches the destination. Occult power speedily, dynamically and amazingly reaches its destination. Occult power has the speed of a deer. It runs very fast and reaches its goal quickly, but that goal is not the ultimate goal. Will power has faithfulness and devotedness. It is devoted to occult power and, at the same time, it is devoted to spiritual power. With its devotedness and faithfulness, will power reaches its destination. We can safely say that will power acts like a faithful dog.

The seeker who is far advanced in the spiritual life tells us that he uses his spiritual power in order to climb up high, higher, highest. The seeker who is far advanced in the spiritual life tells us that he uses his occult power in order to run fast, faster, fastest. The seeker who has tremendous will power, who is inundated with will power, energises the seeker who has spiritual power and the seeker who has occult power. The role of the seeker who is inundated with will power is to help the seeker who has spiritual power and the seeker who has occult power.

Spiritual power almost whisperingly tells us that right is might. If you have the divine right, inside that right you must feel the divine power. If you have the right, then use your power. Occult power bravely tells us that might is right. If you have the capacity, that is your right. Occultism is simple. But the seeker with tremendous will power will tell us that the cry of Mother Earth is the might of Mother Earth and the smile of Father Heaven is the right of Father Heaven. We need only one might and that is the inner cry of Mother Earth. We need only one right and that is the smile of Father Heaven.

How do we acquire spiritual power? We acquire spiritual power by self-giving, constant self-giving. How do we acquire occult power? We acquire occult power by self-examining. How do we acquire will power? We acquire will power by self-affirming. In self-giving, what do we give? We give what we have and what we are. What we have is love of God and what we are is concern for mankind. In self-examining, what do we examine? We examine sincerely our capacity and our incapacity. We examine our incapacity in order to transform it into capacity and we examine our capacity in order to make it absolutely perfect. In self-affirming, what do we affirm? We affirm ourselves. But we have to know that this self-affirmation is not like the self-affirmation of Julius Caesar, who declared, "I came, I saw, I conquered." Our self-affirmation will be: "I came, I loved and I became." This is our divine self-affirmation: "I came into the world, I loved all human beings and I established my inseparable oneness with all human beings."

If we properly use spiritual power, then we can live here on earth in immortality's Reality. If we properly use occult power, then the Universal Reality is always at our disposal. Nothing will be able to hide from an occultist's vision. Anything in the creation will be within an occultist's reach sooner than at once.

If we misuse spiritual power, we shall be extremely, extremely poor in the spiritual life. Sometimes it has happened that advanced seekers, after misusing spiritual power, have become poorer in aspiration than they were right at the beginning of their spiritual journey. Similarly, if an occultist misuses his occult power, then he becomes totally blind in the spiritual life. This blindness is not physical blindness; it is a much more serious blindness. It is a loss of his inner vision. This seeker will not be able to see the truth anymore. And something worse: when occult power is misused, the power that is misused eventually comes and attacks the occultist. In the case of spiritual power, he who misuses it sometimes escapes the attack of the misused spiritual forces; but when occult power is misused, the person who has misused it will eventually be attacked and punished by the forces that were once upon a time his own and at his beck and call.

With will power, what can we do? With will power we can identify ourselves with God's creation; we can identify ourselves with God's Reality. Will power is conscious identification with the reality that exists or with the reality that is going to blossom. Each individual here has a certain amount of will power. But will power can also be cultivated. As we develop our muscles, even so we can develop our will power. But while developing will power, we have to know whether we are going to use this will power only to build in ourselves the temple of truth, the temple of light, the temple of peace, the temple of delight. If this is our goal, then will power will always be ready to help us, mould us and shape us into perfect perfection. Otherwise, will power can also be a true obstacle in our spiritual path.

Spiritual power tells us in unmistakable terms, "I am, I eternally am." Occult power tells us unmistakably, "I can, I immediately can." Will power unmistakably tells us, "I enjoy, I divinely enjoy, I supremely enjoy. I enjoy, not in a human way, but in a divine way, in a supreme way.

Pasco,

Ningeomba sana u-set some principles that can guide people towards realising certain objectives kwenye hili somo lako.

Hili somo ni pana na profoundly sensitive to many.

Its good to encourage people to be masters of their own destinies - but what exactly are you trying to say?? Is there good power and bad power???

Is power the answer to the challenges of the humanity OR is the knowledge the answer to our challenges??

Pasco, I have been through a lot in my life, partly because of these Spiritual Stuff! Nilianza kufundishwa Palmistry - nikifundishwa pale Mikocheni, nikiwa na rafiki yangu (sasa marehemu). Nilitoka TZ nilikwenda Austria 1996 nikapata centre ilikuwa ikifundisha all sort of these power stuff (best part of it is manipulation (uchawi). Nilisoma tena palmistry and numerology. Nilipomaliza ndio nikaanza kujifunza mambo za Spirituality and Power.
By 2003 nilianzisha taasisi yangu hapa ughaibuni tukifanya mambo za kusaidia watu - I got ----ed! absolutely ----ed! All my worries came to pass pale ambapo nilipata shida ya kichwa dreaded with fear, depression and all its manifestation!

Ninasema kwa kifupi sana. These things sounds interesting as you begin to seek. But is a dangerous territory because 1. Your life goes on the auto pilot = you dont know where/when to stop.

2. It gives you great control of others - in the end you lose touch with (a) truth (b) morality (c) moral giver

Ninataka kusema nini:

ntarudi
naona network leo haisomi vizuri nkakuelewa.
