For the first time in history, Tanzania will participate in the G20 Leaders’ Summit, with President Samia Suluhu Hassan set to represent the nation in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 18th and 19th November 2024. This year’s summit, themed “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” follows an invitation from Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
President Samia’s attendance marks a significant milestone, as she becomes the first Tanzanian and the first female Executive President of Tanzania to attend a G20 Leaders' Summit since the group expanded from G8 in 2009. Previously, Tanzania was represented at G8 summits by former leaders Benjamin Mkapa and Jakaya Kikwete in 2005 and 2008, respectively.
Tanzania’s participation underscores its growing influence and commitment to addressing critical global challenges, including climate change, poverty, and food security. The country hopes to use this platform to attract partnerships and funding for initiatives such as clean cooking, renewable energy, climate-smart agriculture, and sustainable economic development.
This summit is expected to strengthen Tanzania’s global profile and support its development goals through strategic international cooperation.
