Varane's brace and Chicharito and Marcelo's goals against Cornellá secured a tenth straight win for the Whites

Real Madrid could not have gotten off to a better start in their Copa del Rey defence. The Whites brushed Cornellá aside in the Power8 Stadium, practically securing their passage to the Round of 16 while also recording their tenth victory in a row. They took an early lead on the scoreboard, only needing ten minutes to do so. James swung in a corner and Varane rose above everyone else to make it 0-1 with a header.

The away team's joy was short lived, even though they controlled possession and continued to create the majority of the chances. Cornellá pulled back an equaliser ten minutes later against the run of play. Pep Caballé won an aerial battle and, without letting the ball touch the ground, Josele set up Óscar Muñoz, who fired past Navas.

Varane again
The game did not change after the goal. Cornellá, limited to defending deep in their own half, tried to cause an upset on the counter, while the reigning title holders dominated the encounter. The chances kept coming and a dangerous cross by James using the outside of his left boot, which Segovia had to push out for a corner, led to the visitors' second goal. Isco took the corner in the 36' and Varane showed his strength in the air once again.

The Frenchman scored his first brace as a professional and showed that Ancelotti's team is well drilled for dead ball situations. They have notched up eight such goals so far this season (5 in La Liga, two in the Copa del Rey and another in the Champions League).

Two defenders scored three of the four goals
The second half started with another effective display by the Copa del Rey champions. This time instead of Varane hitting the mark, it was Chicharito. The Mexican picked up the ball outside the box in the 53' and sent a low diagonal shot past a helpless Segovia. The Whites extended their lead and once again showed off their prowess in front of goal.

That was not the away side's last goal of the night. Before coming off for Raúl de Tomas, who was making his competitive debut with the first team, Isco dribbled the ball towards the edge of the box before shooting in the 75'. Segovia saved the effort, but a clever Marcelo made the most of the loose ball to send it into the back of the net. As such, the Brazilian got his first Copa del Rey goal for Real Madrid and sealed a resounding win, the Whites' tenth in a row.

Ancelotti: "We played a serious game".

"Isco is switched on, gets about and is enjoying in his best form since joining Real Madrid", he added.

Carlo Ancelotti spoke in the Power8 Stadium press room after the game to analyse Real Madrid's first leg encounter against Cornellá in the Copa del Rey Round of 32: "We were good and played a serious game. The players who were involved can be happy with themselves for putting on a great spectacle".

"Cornellà played well and deserved their goal. They worked extremely well, were well organised and fought hard. The atmosphere was excellent and we had a lot of supporters cheering us on in the stadium".

Praise for Isco
"He is great and is loved by the fans. He's switched on, gets around the pitch and is enjoying his best form since joining Real Madrid. We hope he can keep it up, with the same rhythm and with the same attitude".

"Benzema is fine. He didn't have any problems recovering in time for this match and didn't need a rest. The whole squad is fine, including those who haven't played much, like Khedira and Illarra. James doesn't have any problems. The plan was to give him an hour on the pitch and he played a good game".

The playing system
"4-4-2 is a system we use regularly when we don't have possession in order to defend well. Today we played well with the ball also. Usually, when we have the ball we play with an extra man up front. This system allows us to press better when we don't have it".

His statements about Blatter
"I need to redress what I said. The question I was asked this morning wasn't very clear. He didn't ask for Neuer to win the Ballon d'Or, instead he was referring to the World Cup Golden Ball, which I agree with him about. As such, I would like to redress what I said this morning".

Chicharito: "The important thing was to get a good win in the first leg"

"The supporters helped us a lot and we thank them for that", stated Keylor Navas.

Chicharito was one of the players to get on the scoresheet during his Copa del Rey debut against Cornellà, and spoke about how he felt after the game: "The important thing was to get a good win in the first leg. The manager asks us to be professional and respectful with every opponent we face. That means playing as if we were up against Barcelona".

"James passed me the ball, I attempted a one-two with Benzema and then I just shot towards goal and thanks to God it went in. I work hard so that every time a chance falls to me I'm able to make the most of it and do the best I can for this crest".

Navas: "The supporters helped us a lot"
"It was a chance to get some minutes, we all want to play and win games. Hopefully the fans enjoyed themselves and have gone home happy because they helped us a lot and we thank them for that. We swapped our jerseys with the Cornellá players because it was a big night for them. It is a nice way to remember the night and hopefully they'll enjoy them".

"You always have to be ready for when the manager gives you a chance and make the most of the opportunity. So far I have been given a chance to play in the Copa del Rey and when the manager decides to give me another I'll make the most of it. I'll be just as excited, ready and motivated to give my all for Madrid".

A good moment for the team
"The team is in good form, we are working hard. All the guys who play regularly are doing really well and, those of us who don't, are itching for a chance. There is a lot of commitment and effort in each training session and that is reflected in each game".

Team-mates awarded by the LFP
"If they were given an award it is because they received the most votes, that's how it was decided. We are delighted to have our hard work valued. Cristiano is the best player in the world, he deserves to win the Ballon d'Or, and he shows that in every game and in every training session. He is a great player and a great person, something we see every day. It is an honour to play alongside him".

Varane: "They were my first goals of the season and I hope to get more"

"We have the ability to score from set-pieces and we have to keep doing it", he said after finding the net twice.

Varane was the star of the victory over Cornellá, scoring the first two goals. The Frenchman spoke about his clinical finishing in the Copa del Rey: "This is the competition where I score the most goals. I'm happy about the game, the victory and my first goals of the season. Hopefully I can score more".

"We have the ability to score from set-pieces and we have to keep doing it because it's good for the team. The crowd were behind us and there were a lot of Madrid fans in the stadium. As for the Ballon d'Or, I don't decide that. Hopefully it will be a Real Madrid player".

Mainly ball work following the Copa del Rey debut.

Following their Copa del Rey debut, Ancelotti's squad completed a recovery session. The Whites trained in Ciudad Real Madrid and the Italian coach worked with Ramos, Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcelo, Kroos and all three of the first team goalkeepers on the pitch. The rest of the players worked in the indoor facilities.

The session included a game of footvolley, which Ancelotti and Hierro took part in. Before that, the players worked on stretching exercises and possession drills. The Madrid players also worked on attacking moves which led to shots on goal. Keylor Navas, Pacheco and Casillas carried out specific goalkeeping drills.

Casillas: "The Club World Cup could be the icing on the cake for 2014"

"We have to try to top La Liga before Christmas".

Iker Casillas was centre stage during a promotional event in which he coached a group of children. The ceremony took place in the Boadilla del Monte municipal sports centre and, as well as teaching children football skills, the Real Madrid player also answered questions put to him by the youngsters: "The direction the team is going in is what we wanted from the off, and the aim is not worry about other sides. We have to try to top La Liga before Christmas, which after beating Barcelona we have taken a huge step towards doing".

"We are on the right track to progressing to the next round in the Copa del Rey and we still have to seal our place in the Round of 16 in the Champions League, which we are very close to doing. Then we have the Club World Cup, a tournament we have earned our right to be in and which we think could be the icing on the cake for 2014, a phenomenal year so far. We have done a good job of keeping everyone happy".

"Our aim is to get to March or April as best as we can, as that is the period when almost all of the competitions are decided, as well as be 100% day to day. Once again we have a tough year ahead of us as it will be difficult to top last season. But we have the players to do it and our group dynamic is great".

His most treasured title
"My first European Cup. To break into the first team and win the Eighth the same year was a radical change for me. I was playing in the Third Division nine months before that, moving from grounds where there were 100 people to others with 60,000. That was the most important accomplishment of my career. There have been other important ones since then, but that was the start of everything".

"I had a sense of relief with the Tenth, because that was a title we had in our sights for a long time. The agony until the end of the game meant that we celebrated the win twice as hard".

Real Madrid career path
"I joined Real Madrid in 1990, after a trial in the old Ciudad Deportiva. Antonio Mezquita picked me and after that I progressed through all the different age categories until reaching the first team. I have spent my whole life with Real Madrid".

"Now I am the captain because I am the most senior member of the Spanish national team and Real Madrid squads. I've been lucky enough to have had great captains and I try to impart the knowledge I've learned on a daily basis. I hope I am able to help those coming up just as I was helped".
The future
"I would like to remain involved in the world of football. It is really nice to teach youngsters what I have learned over such a long time. Sharing what I was taught by the great coaches and team-mates I have had".
