Self-proclaimed National Resistance Movement (NRM) general Miguna Miguna was on Tuesday night deported after a five-day demeaning encounter with Kenyan police.
The deportation has left many Kenyans wondering on the government stand on the rights of its citizens after the controversial lawyer was denied fair trial since his dramatic seizure at his Runda home in Nairobi on Friday.
A senior government official said that the CS Fred Matiang’i led Interior and National Coordination Ministry will give a detailed statement on Wednesday morning, according to Nation.
According to the unnamed official, when Miguna Miguna was arrested, the Canadian government wrote to Kenya expressing concerns that their Citizen was being harassed. As a resolve, they wanted him back and thus the deportation.
A social media page attributed to the government said the State had headed the advice of the court to have Miguna freed and further offered him a ticket home.
At around 10 pm Tuesday, Miguna was ejected from the country on a KLM flight.
“We are reliably informed that Miguna Miguna has been forced into a KLM flight for ‘deportation’ to Canada,” lawyer Nelson Havi who is Miguna’s lead counsel said in a tweet.
Havi took a swipe at authorities over the alleged deportation of Miguna.
He charged: “Now, how do you deport a Kenyan? This Country has been overrun by criminals.”
Another lawyer, Dr John Khaminwa told Nation his client “was forced into a-KLM flight minutes to 10 pm and we gather he is headed to Canada.”
