In an effort to assist the 29 Tanzanian students stranded in Ukraine, four opposition parties have formed a special emergency fund which will receive donations from well wishers.
The stranded students had allegedly gone to Ukraine after being promised they would receive education loans from the government upon their arrival.
Speaking to journalists in Dar es Salaam yesterday, the Civic United Front (CUF) Chairman, Prof Ibrahim Lipumba, said the funds had to be raised before Tuesday (tomorrow) which had been set as the deadline for the students to settle their arrears.
`They have been given a deadline of 29 May, 2007, failure to which they will hand over their passports and be evicted from hostels they are currently staying,` he said.
He said the matter was even more urgent because last week, the abandoned students had gone as far as seeking help from the Embassy of the United Kingdom, where they had camped for a week.
`We are confident that Tanzanians and well wishers will donate money to save lives of students who are left high and dry and are currently starving in cold weather in a foreign country,` he said.
He said that if Tanzanians could contribute Independent Day celebrations, where a lot of money was raised, then they would not fail to donate to students who had gone abroad in search for education.
Lipumba said if the stranded students will not clear their debts, they will be forced to cut short their studies and court cases will be filed against them for failing to comply with their agreements with the universities.
He claimed that the UK Embassy in Ukraine had offered to settle the students` bills and provide them with basic needs provided the government of Tanzania would write a letter confirming that the money would be repaid.
`The government is yet to write the letter,` he said.
He alleged that a government team, which was supposed to be sent to Ukraine to assess the situation early this month, had its trip cancelled.
