Richard Mteki played his heart out in Lengthens losing cause against Simba SC of Tanzania as the Happy People slumped to a demoralizing 3-0 defeat at Rufaro Stadium on Friday.
It was a nightmarish day in the office for the Mandla Masuku coached side as goalkeeper Lovemore Makwavarara made mistakes between the posts to let in the three goals that effectivey dashed Lengthens hopes of progressing to the later stages of the CAF Confederations Cup.
Masuku could not hide his disappointment with the goalkeeper and blamed him for the Happy Peoples misfortunes and misery. If you are a goalkeeper and you let in such goals then he should know that he has let the nation down, said a visibly shaken Masuku.
We have made life difficult for ourselves, Masuku said.
But in his sadness, Masuku remained optimistic that his side can overturn the tables in Tanzania. If they can score three goals away from home, we can also do the same, he said and added: We will try and overturn the tables in Tanzania.
Lengthens dominated proceedings, especially in the early stages of the match and also during the later minutes, with Mteki playing his heart out. Bruce Tshuma, captain for the day also played well but it was always going to be difficult for the home side, especially with Ndumiso Khanye missing after picking up a red card in Madagascar against AS Adema.
The Simba Stars coach was happy that his side had picked up maximum points away from home: It was a tough match we had and we are now looking forward to the next match, he said, adding: We are happy with the result.
We will now go and play an attacking style at home as we were very defensive today, bearing in mind that we are away.
Lengthens introduced three substitutes at the start of the second half but Dylan Chiroodza, Patrick Makuvaza and Mike Mhunga could not change the face of the game.
Admire Dzukamanja and Artwell Nyamiwa missed a lot of opportunities as the match progressed and they will certainly feel bad as Lengthens could have won the match had they taken those chances.
Nyamiwa missed golden opportunities from close range while the entire Lenthens side failed to utilize set-pieces while their opponents got two of their three goals from freekicks.
This is a poor performance by the boys, said John Chikochi, one of the Lengthens directors.
They should have done better, especially when missing those golden chances, he told the Lengthens website.
