Kilimanjaro Records
Fastest ascent of Kilimanjaro
On August 13, 2014, Swiss mountain runner Karl Egloff ran to the 5895m summit in 4 hours and 56 minutes, thereby beating the previous ascent-only record of Spanish runner Kilian Jornet, set in 2010.
Fastest ascent and descent
That’s not the end of the story, however, for Karl then trotted back down to the gate in a total time of 6 hours 42 minutes and 24 seconds. You can watch a video of Karl’s record-breaking attempt by clinking on this Karl Egloff world-record climb link.
Fastest ascent and descent (unaided)
A previous holder of the record for the fastest ascent and descent, Simon Mtuy (Tanzania), still holds one record, for on the 22 February 2006 he climbed from Umbwe Gate to the summit and back in 9 hours 19 minutes. In doing so, he achieved the fastest ever unaided ascent and descent (by unaided, they mean that he carried his own food, water and clothing). This despite suffering from a nasty bout of diarrhoea, as well as taking a three-minute break at the top to video himself, plus two further breaks to vomit!
I should also mention that Simon, who runs the Summit Expeditions and Nomadic Experience trekking agency in Moshi, was there to greet Kilian as he finished his record-breaking feat (and took the record from Simon) – proving he is a gentleman as well as an extraordinary athlete!
Fastest ascent (female) – and descent
Danish athlete Kristina Schou Madsen reached the summit of Kilimanjaro via the Mweka Route- and descended on the same route – in a speedy 6 hours, 52 minutes and 54 seconds. Kristina set the time on February 23rd, 2018.
Youngest person to reach the summit
On 22 October 2018 Coaltan Tanner, from Albuquerque, New Mexico, reached the summit of Kilimanjaro aged just 6. In doing so, he broke one of the most enduring (and disputed) records on the mountain by becoming the youngest person ever to reach the summit unaided. (By unaided, we mean that Coaltan was not carried at any time during the trek and walked the entire way from gate to summit.)
The first recognised holder of this record was Keats Boyd, who back in January 2008 successfully hauled his seven-year-old body up to the summit of Africa’s highest mountain. That record stood for a decade until 2018 Cash Callahan, also aged seven (or 2824 days days to be precise), also climbed unaided to the summit. Unfortunately, nobody could trace Keats to find out when his birthday was, and as a result nobody was certain which of them was actually the younger when they reached the top.
Thankfully, Coaltan’s achievement means we now have a new – and undisputed – record holder.
Also in 2018, in March, the youngest female to climb Kilimanjaro, Montannah Kenney, of Austin, Texas, walked to the top, also aged just 7 years old. Montannah was precisely 2865 days old when she made it to the top Montannah beat the previous female record holder, Roxy Getter from Florida, who was eight years old when she got to Uhuru Peak.
The youngest person to climb Kilimanjaro who was above the minimum age was Jordan Romero of Big Bear Lake, California, who achieved the summit on the 23 July 2006 at the relatively ancient age of 10 years and 11 days.
Oldest person to reach the summit
Perhaps surprisingly, this is the record that has changed hands most frequently over the past few years. On July 20th 2017 Dr Fred Distelhorst, a retired orthodontist from Vail, Colorado, became, at 88, the oldest person ever to climb Kilimanjaro. His achievement eclipsed the previous record set by Russian octagenarian Angela Vorobeva on October 29th 2015, who took the popular Machame Route to the top at 86 years, 267 days. (Impressive, but it’s fair to say that it’s not the toughest challenge that Ms Vorobeva has faced, having survived of the Siege of Leningrad in 1944!)
Her achievement in turn beat the record set by Anne Lorimor, of Arizona, who climbed in August 2015 with her niece and nephew to the summit aged 85. A few months before that, on 2nd October 2014, Robert Wheeler, from the USA, reached the summit after five days of trekking aged 85 years 201 days. His climb thus trumped Martin and Esther Kafer, from Vancouver, who reached the summit in September 2012 aged 85 and 84 respectively. Esther was just a year older than Bernice Buum, who reached the summit aged 83 in September 2010; while Martin’s achievement pipped those of farmer Richard Byerley from Washington, USA, who in October 2011 reached the summit of Africa’s highest mountain at the ripe old age of 84 years and 71 days – and who in turn had eclipsed British grandad George Solt, a retired professor from Olney, Buckinghamshire, who the previous summer had summited at the age of 82.
Thankfully, Dr Distelhorst’s achievement also beats the unofficial record set by the mysterious Valtee Daniel, a Frenchman whom I only read about once while researching the first edition of our guidebook way back in 2001, and whom I have never heard anything else about since. Mr Daniel’s climb has never been recognised by the Guinness Book of Records, who insist that any record attempt is verified by independent witnesses and must be filmed, photographed and meticulously documented in a log book. With Dr Distelhorst becoming the first person to climb Kili above the age of 87, we can finally put Monsieur Daniel’s unofficial record to bed.

Huo muda Fred alikua ameshashuka chini kwani yule mwenzetu niliemuacha nae aliishia Stella so alimrudisha chini. This time nikawa ma guide mmoja mtu mzima anaitwa Moses no comment on him but... Nikamkumbukaje Fred hapa angekua ananibembeleza [emoji23]

Nikaanza kulia.. kushuka ni rahisi ila mimi nilikua nimeishiwa nguvu. Kuna muda nilikua nakuangali kule juu najiuliza hivi mimi niliwezaje kupanda juu halafu hapo najisemea hata unipe bilion moja hunirudishi huko juu mimi...

mzee Moses ananisisitiza nijitahidi nishuke ananiambia Kibo ni pale tunafika sasa hivi wewe jitahidi..Na kweli naona vibanda vilee najipa moyo mwenyewe nanyamaza then naendelea kutembea.. Nikitembea kidogo nachoka nakaa tena naanza kulia. It was a mixed feeling... halafu pia nilikua nimeikumbuka familia yangu.... Tukipishana na watu wananipa pole kama zote.... Nikaishiwa nguvu siwezi kutembea mwenyewe so akawa ananishikilia ndio naweza kutembea.... Tumeshikizana wee Kufika sehem I couldn’t walk at all yaani hata kusimama mwenyewe nikawa siwezi... Hata nikijaribu vipi nashindwa.... ilikuja stretcher kunibeba na kunirudisha Kibo.

Wakati tunaelekea Kibo nilishangaa porters wengi wanapanda kuelekea mlimani. Nikawa najiuliza hawa jua lote hili ndio wanaenda kupanda Mlima nikauliza akanambia wanaenda kupokea watu wanaotoka mlimani.

Ukifika Kibo yaani wanakuhudumia vizuri hapo.. Nikapewa chai.. mara soup ya moto.. Tukaambiwa tupumzike kidogo tukiamka tunaanza safari ya Horombo. Ngoma hailali. Nikamuwazia yule mzungu aliefariki.. Nikasema silali wala nini nitakaa macho hadi hiyo time ya kurudi Horombo.. Nisije kufia usingizini. Ila Chezea usingizi na uchovu nilikuja kushtuka naamshwa nikale.. I wish niweke picha moja niliyopigwa wakati nimelala... I was half dead.. chakaram.

ku pack vitu was a headache.. Na ilitupasa tufanye haraka maana hizo domitories kuna wageni wengine walikua wamefika so inabidi waingie.. Rohoni kwangu najisikia safiii. Horombo nawahi kufika mapema kushinda hata wale wengine..Kuna baadhi ya watu walienda kuoga mimi sikuoga wala nini.. Nilisema hadi nifike mjini.. I want hot shower nikae hata lisaa bafuni.

Horombo tunalala then kesho asubuhi inaanza safari ya kurudi Marangu getini. Nili enjoy saana zile nyimbo.. tukacheza pale.. Mimi na wenzangu 3 tulirudi Marangu getini na ambulance. Asubuhi ile Guide kama kuna mtu katika watu wake hayuko vizuri kuna gari linakuwepo for emergency kuwarudisha getini.. So wengine wanatangulia kwa miguu sisi tunabakia kusubiri gari...

Wale waarabu wa 4 they told us kwamba only 1 of them was able to reach the peak.. huyo mwanaume wale wadada hawakufika.... Mmoja wao alikua anatapika saana... alikua analalamika kuumwa... walituambia wametokea UAE.. Kurudi na gari was another experience..

It was very sad. Its only few days we stayed in Kili but the bond we had shared with those people was so strong... Watu walilia saana...

Tip tulichangishana tangu mwanzo elfu 75 each.. na mwanzo tulipanga kila mtu achangie laki wengine wakaona laki nyingi tufanye 75... Maana tayari tulishalipia fedha.... ila baada ya kupanda mlima na kuona kazi wale watu wamefanya we all thought kwama 75 haikua pesa.. It was nothing compared na service walitotupatia kule juu. Ile pesa waligawana katika group. Sisi hatukutaka kila mtu ampe tip mtu mkononi kivyake.. maana kuna mtu wa jikoni yeye humuoni unashangaa tu chakula mezani.. kuna mtu anaebeba bag yako humuoni ila muda wote ukifika point fulani unaletewa bag liko salama. So kuna wengine hatu interact nao ila tunapata service yao. Wao wenyewe walijua waligawana vipi ile pesa.

Nilichukua mawasiliano na Fred.. Alinambia hataweza kuja hotelini.. na mpaka kesho kutwa huwa tunawasiliana ingawa most of the time anakua hapatikaniki yuko mlimani.. So kitu ambacho nimepanga ni kumsaidia part ndogo ya ada.. Mimi sio tajiri maisha yangu ya kuunga unga but what he did kwangu ni wema na utu wa hali ya juu. He was extremely caring. Very understanding.... Maybe that is the only way I can repay him.. Mara kibao huwa namwambia yeye ni mtu poa saana.

Tunarudi Hotelini.. Hiyo ndio siku kulikula misosi tunayopendelea.. It was a celebration evening.. I was so relieved...

We came back to DSM safely with a lot of great memories. Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro to the peak is something that I will hold close into my heart. My trip was very eventful and joyous, I met new people who were very generous and down to earth like Fred.. they took care of me as if I were their own child/sister, I came across various obstacles, I strived for the best and most importantly I achieved my goal. It’s unreal how we became so attached with guides/porters in such a short period of time. I journeyed through pain, laughter, suffering, dirtiness and Mr Peters famous porridge and soup.(ambayo ilikua huwezi kukwepa kunywa)

I had the greatest moments and created incredible memories which will remain in my mind and heart forever. As they say nothing comes easy and it’s true, It wasn’t easy at all but I did it... One thing I learned is to appreciate everything this life offers.

I thank God for protecting me all the time, My Mother for her support.. My group mate who not only made the trip funny but also easy,.....Mr Emmanuel & Origin Team for for this wonderful journey[emoji92]

My family & Friends made this for Us..
