Ukraine taking heavy losses in Kursk โ€“ FT

Kiev has had to pull forces from the Donbass front for its incursion into Russia

Ukrainian troops that invaded Russiaโ€™s Kursk Region have taken heavy losses in men and Western-provided vehicles, the Financial Times (FT) has reported.

The attack that began last Tuesday involved units drawn from six Ukrainian frontline brigades, soldiers told the outlet. They also claimed to have caught the Russians by surprise, but quickly came under fire from drones and FAB glide bombs.

Russian estimates of over 1,600 Ukrainians killed were โ€œimpossible to verifyโ€ and โ€œexaggerated,โ€ according to the FT, which nevertheless reported โ€œmany ambulances and armored medical evacuation vehicles rushed to and from the front line.โ€

FAB glide bombs also reportedly โ€œwiped out some Ukrainian troops and valuable western-provided equipment.โ€ The group of fighters interviewed by the paper on Sunday said their Stryker โ€“ a wheeled US-made armored vehicle โ€“ was hd been demaged and had to be towed back into Ukraine where it would be cannibalized for parts.

According to the soldiers, the goal of the operation was to capture Russian territory as a bargaining chip and force Moscow to divert troops from the Donbass front.

โ€œWe can fight here and take their territory. And then negotiations can start, and we will have some land of theirs to trade for our land,โ€ said one soldier, identified as โ€˜Denys.โ€™

Ukraine reportedly stripped its frontline of troops to stage the Kursk incursion. According to the FT, the soldiers interviewed had fought in Kharkov and on the Donetsk front, at places such as Chasov Yar and a settlement called New York.

โ€œThese cities are already lost. They are only ours on the map. The Russians have wiped them out,โ€ Denys said.

The invading force lost 70 armored vehicles just on Sunday, according to unofficial Russian estimates making the rounds on social media, which claimed this was a record for any one day since the conflict escalated in February 2022.

According to acting Kursk Region Governor Aleksey Smirnov, Ukrainian forces have advanced about 12km into Russia and occupied about 28 settlements. At least 12 Russian civilians have been killed and another 121 injured, including ten children. Over 120,000 residents have been evacuated from the border region over the past week, Smirnov said.

A Ukrainian soldier who was captured in Kursk Region amid Kievโ€™s ongoing cross-border offensive has claimed that foreign mercenaries are fighting for Ukraine on Russian soil.

Footage of an interview with the detainee was released by Russiaโ€™s Federal Security Service (FSB) on Monday. The agency claimed that the man shown in the footage was captured with the help of local residents in Kursk Region. The Ukrainian identified himself as a 26-year-old member of his country's 80th Air Assault Brigade, which is taking part in the offensive.

โ€œThey spoke in English, Polish, maybe French. I did not understand them, called on the radio to repeat, and only heard gibberish in response,โ€ he said.

A Ukrainian military commander ordered his men to kill armed civilians and wound unarmed men while operating in Russiaโ€™s Kursk Region, a captured soldier has claimed during an interview.

Last week, despite suffering setbacks elsewhere on the frontline, Kiev launched a major cross-border military operation into Russia. Moscowโ€™s security service, the FSB, released footage on Monday showing a man who it claimed was captured during the hostilities โ€œwith the help of locals.โ€

The prisoner of war identified himself as Ruslan Poltoratsky, 26, and said he was an active-duty member of Ukraineโ€™s 80th Air Assault Brigade. His unit was given instructions on how to act on Russian soil by an officer whom he knew under the call sign Strizh (โ€œswiftโ€ in Russian) who presumably commanded the squad in which Poltoratsky served.

โ€œThe commander specifically told us to โ€ฆ shoot men in their legs and throw them into a root cellar or basement. Kill them if armed,โ€ he said, apparently referring to how he was supposed to treat Russian civilians.

โ€œAs for prisoners [of war], there were no particular instructions. Most likely, [we were supposed to take] no prisoners at all,โ€ he added in the four-minute-long clip.

After seizing border settlements, the Ukrainians looted homes, he added, saying: โ€œ[We were] taking everything that caught our eye, which was valuable and portable.โ€

The goal of the Ukrainian push into Russia, as explained to the troops, is โ€œto capture a lot of territory, so that under the peace treaty that we will have we could swap your lands for ours,โ€ the man said. He described the offensive as โ€œthe last hope of Ukraine.โ€

According to Western media, Ukraine sent as many as 10,000 troops for its risky land grab, reportedly using some of its best-armed and most experienced combat personnel. Poltoratsky said that during the incursion he heard radio chatter in English, Polish and what he believed was French. He said he did not understand what exactly was being said, since he does not speak those languages.

The Russian military estimated on Monday that Ukraine had suffered up to 1,610 casualties in the operation and had lost 32 tanks and scores of other heavy weapons.
