Russia captures New York in Donbass – RIA

The capture of the well-fortified town comes after months of heavy fighting

Russian troops have fully liberated the town of New York in the Donetsk People’s Republic, RIA Novosti reported on Monday. The settlement bearing a peculiar name had been turned into a major fortress by Ukraine.

The Russian military launched a large-scale assault on New York and the neighboring Toretsk agglomeration, a cluster of mostly industrial towns with Toretsk at its center, back in June as part of its continued offensive in Donbass. In early July, Russian forces managed to take the town center while pushing Ukrainian troops towards its northern outskirts, according to Russian media reports. Now, the northern part of the town has also come under Russian control.

Capturing New York opens a path towards Toretsk, another major Ukrainian stronghold in Donbass. Both towns have been heavily fortified by the Ukrainian military ever since hostilities broke out in the region in the wake of the 2014 Western-backed Maidan coup.
New York and Toretsk are both located less than two dozen kilometers away from Gorlovka, a Donbass town where the Donetsk People’s Republic militias took up positions back in 2014. As a result, Ukraine turned the towns into part of an important defensive line. Gorlovka was subjected to regular shelling in the years prior to the start of the conflict between Moscow and Kiev in 2022. By mid-2017, the city had reported 235 civilian deaths linked to Ukrainian attacks.

New York was founded in the 19th century, and the origins of its name remain unclear. Some media reports link it to its original residents, who were German Mennonites. Others claim that a retired Russian officer decided to name his estate after the famous American city. In 1951, the Soviet authorities changed its name to Novgorodskoye, literally β€˜New Town’ in Russian. In 2021, Ukraine’s parliament restored the historical name of New York.

Ukrainian armor in Kursk Region goes up in smoke – MOD (VIDEO)

Lancet drones and Mi-28 attack helicopters have targeted the invading forces, according to Russian Defense Ministry footage.
Russian drones and attack helicopters have been targeting Ukrainian tanks, troops, and armored vehicles taking part in the incursion into Kursk Region, according to videos published by the Defense Ministry in Moscow.

Several thousand troops crossed the Russian border earlier this month, in a move that Moscow has described as an act of terrorism. Russia has responded with intense air and artillery strikes against the invaders.

β€œLosses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for the day have been more than 330 service members and 27 pieces of equipment, including four tanks, an IFV, three armored transports, 19 armored vehicles, eight vehicles, two artillery pieces, and three mortars,” the Russian military said in a statement on Monday.

Videos released by the Russian Defense Ministry show the continued destruction of Ukrainian forces in Kursk Region.

The first 20-second clip shows a tank still on its transport truck being spotted by a reconnaissance drone and destroyed by a Lancet loitering UAV.

Another video, also 20 seconds in duration, shows a Ukrainian armored personnel carrier positioned on a highway in what appears to be a roadblock. A Lancet strike set the APC ablaze, while the startled Ukrainian infantry scattered.

The third video of the day shows Mi-28 attack helicopters (NATO reporting name β€˜Havoc’) taking off to fire rockets at both armored units and personnel of the invaders.

According to the Russian military, the helicopters used 9K121 Vikhr (Whirlwind; NATO reporting name β€˜AT-16 Scallion’) guided missiles to carry out their mission successfully.

Russian air and missile strikes have been targeting Ukrainian troops both inside Kursk Region and in their rear, in Ukraine’s Sumy Region. According to Moscow, elements of the Ukrainian 22nd, 61st, and 115th Mechanized brigades, 80th and 82nd Assault brigades, and the 103rd and 129th Territorial Defense brigades, have been involved in the incursion

UKRAINE HITS THIRD BRIDGE IN RUSSIA'S KURSK, SAYS BUFFER ZONE IS FINAL GOAL

Stating the incursion’s aims for the first time, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Ukraine needs border β€˜buffer zone’.

Moscow says Ukraine has struck and damaged a third bridge in the Kursk region as Kyiv forces attempt to expand its incursion within Russian territory.

Russia’s Investigative Committee on Monday confirmed the attack on the bridge located along the River Seym, which winds through Kursk.

Ukrainian authorities have yet to comment on the Russian claim.....

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ Day 907 of the war in Ukraine!
Today, Ukrainian troops control more than 1,200 square kilometers and 92 settlements in the Kursk region of Russia. The Ukrainian offensive in this area continues to move forward. In the Glushkovsky district of the Kursk region, a large number of Russian troops are now tactically surrounded by the Ukrainian forces. We are talking about a group of about 2,700 Russian soldiers.
This tactical encirclement provides a potential opportunity to further expand the advancement over a territory of about another 700 square kilometers.
The fact is that Ukrainian troops have cut off the Russians from 3 sides, the fourth side they are backed to the river. From the northern direction, the Russians had the opportunity to receive reinforcements and supplies via 3 bridges that crossed the river. Over the past two days, the Ukrainians troops managed to blow up all 3 of these bridges. Therefore, the Russians now have 3 options. They can build pontoon crossings, fight to the last soldier or surrender. Of course, for the Ukrainians, the most acceptable option is to take a large group of Russians prisoner. This will provide an opportunity to exchange a larger number of Ukrainians who are still in Russian captivity. And on the northern side by a river and three destroyed bridges. The blue circle shows a temporary pontoon crossing of Russian troops. Photo 2 shows time of blowing up of one bridge.

President Zelenskyy:

"If our partners had lifted the restrictions on long-range weapons, we would not have gone to Kursk and cleared military facilities there."

A few more quotes from Zelenskyy's speech:

β–ͺ️ Putin's zero reaction proves that there is no reason not to give us permission to hit Russia with long-range weapons.

β–ͺ️ The West is delaying the supply of weapons to Ukraine. Military bases, military airfields, and military installations are legitimate targets, but we don't have permission to hit them.

β–ͺ️ If someone found out that we were preparing an operation in Kursk, they would say that it was crossing red lines. That is why no one has heard about it.

β–ͺ️ All the naive concepts of red lines in relation to Russia have recently disappeared as soon as we entered Sudzha.

β–ͺ️ The Kursk operation is the largest investment in the liberation of Ukrainians from captivity.

β–ͺ️ Russia's relations with regimes such as those in Pyongyang and Tehran pose a threat not only to Ukraine.

β–ͺ️ NATO will be complete only with Ukraine as a member.

Ukraine did not disclose preparations for an operation in Russia's Kursk Oblast to Kyiv's allies because the world might consider it crossing Russia's "strictest of all red lines," President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Aug. 19.

Breaking news:

The governor of Russia’s border area of Belgorod, Vyacheslav Gladkov, has just declared a regionwide state of emergency in the past few hours.

Ukraine’s military continues to hit back and hit hard across the border, after a stalled push by Russian forces into the Kharkiv region.

β€œThe situation in the Belgorod region continues to be extremely difficult and tense,” Gladkov said, adding that he had appealed directly to Vladimir Putin’s to declare a higher level of federal emergency.

This, after more than 900 days of a war the Kremlin promised would last less than a week.
