estimated 20,000 foreign fighters from 52 countries participating directly in the Ukraine hostilities is not just a question of semantics. Misclassification can have profound life-or-death implications, as several foreign fighters enlisted in the Ukrainian International Legion of Territorial Defence discovered.
Ten foreign fighters from the United Kingdom, Sweden, Morocco, the United States and Croatia, whom Russian authorities controversially predetermined to be mercenaries, were taken captive in Mariupol.

According to Russia’s Ministry of Defence, the answer is yes. Last week, it published a list of alleged foreign mercenaries fighting in Ukraine’s armed forces.
The list, broken down into regions and countries, claimed that since the conflict began on 24 February 2022, 13,387 foreigners had taken up arms on behalf of Ukraine and that 5,962 had been “eliminated” (presumably killed or seriously wounded).
Among the 88 countries, three Southeast Asian states appear: the Philippines (17 volunteers, two “eliminated”); Indonesia (ten volunteers, four “eliminated”); and Thailand (three volunteers, one “eliminated”).

Russian forces strike mercenary concentrations, airfields in western Ukraine — expert​

LUGANSK, March 7. /TASS/. Russia targeted training areas for mercenaries and airfields as it launched attacks in western Ukraine overnight, military expert Vitaly Kiselyov told TASS, citing data from underground resistance.
Air raid sirens sounded across Ukraine in the early hours on Friday. While an air raid alert lasted almost 3.5 hours in the Ternopol Region, explosions were reported in Ternopol, Ivano-Frankovsk, and other western Ukrainian cities.
"Ivano-Frankovsk, Lvov, and Ternopol are key cities for mercenaries, mostly from Poland, France, and Great Britain. The area is a strategic point between Poland and [the zone of] hostilities where ordnance is being supplied to, and there are also training facilities there," the expert explained. Among other targets, ammo depots and a train station where combat vehicles were parked were struck, Kiselyov said, citing partisans.
In addition, airfields with concentrations of NATO-standard and Soviet-made warplanes were hit, according to the expert.

Kiselyov did not rule out that more strikes on concentrations of Ukrainian military hardware and troops deep behind enemy lines will be delivered. These, he said, will contribute to the advance of Russian forces on the battlefront.
