Typical example of unplanned settlements is Manzese. You can find properties with values up to US$ 500'000.
Comprises of properties of different in values.
Semi crafted infrastructure and sanitary system.
This answer of yours........what can I say.......dumb? Sorry, I dont mean to insult u, and feel not offended about that!

Now, I asked u to explain in details, as u have about slums above, the characteristics of unplanned settlements. How are unplanned settlements distinct from slums? So, does the presence of a few multi-million properties make the difference? For your info........there exist such properties smack in the middle of every major slum in Kenya, including Kibera.

kibera-high-rise-apartments.jpg

This is what's my understanding of what unplanned settlements really are:

They are housing areas not in compliance with the set codes of planning and building quality. The houses are usually of poor quality cos they are hastily built out of poor quality materials. The land on which the housing is based- the occupants have no legal claim to (we call them squatters here in Kenya). They are haphazardly planned- resulting to irregular access to such crucial amenities as toilets, sewerage/drainage systems, electricity, clean water, quality schools, medical facilities, security and even well pronounced access routes to the houses.

Kibera

Kibera_slum_Nairobi_ritebook.in-011.jpg

These are both unplanned settlements. But Kibera, it can be argued is in worse state than Manzese cos so many people- (around 250k people) are confined in such a small space- around 2.5km2. Add that to the fact that it is located right next to a major city added to its dubious reputation around the world.

Usizungumzie infrastructure kama visa maana ,naona unaongelea Nairobi huongelei Kenya, mwenzenu wa Tz wana DSM karibia kila mkoa, maana pamechangamka Ila kwenu Nairobi ndo mwisho hata barabara za lami huko mikoani kwenu hazijafika kama TZ
Huu ni upuuzi. Every region of Kenya is connected with tarred roads.

Kenya-road-map.gif

Hebu tazama hili.......road network by country. Kati ya Kenya na Tanzania, ni nchi lipi iko na barabara nyingi zaidi ya mwengine? Nyinyi kukwamilia tu propaganda potovu za SSM

The World Factbook — Central Intelligence Agency

Kwa hiyo Kenya iko kama Botswana??
Ambako hamna pot holes na earth road.
Why not? Kwani what so special about the Botswana roads? I can tell u with a very straight face that the roads in the Kenyan rural areas are of very good quality.......one of the reasons Kenya is ranked well ahead of its peers in the region in terms of development. Roads are considered part of the indicators of infrastructural development.

Roads in Turkana.....one of the Kenya's most notorious regions

Assuming that Kibera is really 2.5mn, and all the other fifteen slums in Nairobi have a minimum of 500k as some of u Tanzanians claim, parroting those unscrupulous NGOs.....does it then mean that Nairobi has a total population of well over 10mn?
Ah yes, the lie about the 2.5 mln residents of Kibera. And that the former PM is responsible for their existence. Two of the most enduring lies about the slum issue in kenya.

Look, ofcos the former PM was NOT responsible for the existence of the slum. The slum is in fact much older than, he was born and found it there. It prceded him.

However, he was the MP (wow! from MP to PM) for that region for well over 20yrs, surely he could have done something to improve the situation in that place. He really could. No excuses at all. Not necessarily eradicate the slum, but just alleviating the situation in that place.

Flying Toilets......how could Kibera gain such an uncomplimentary reputation in his watch? How do u even eat supper knowing that there are people living in such conditions.......and they are your matter?

FYI, not every unplanned neighborhoods in Nairobi ni mabatis, and slums account for only 25% of the total Nairobi area!

True, but there are other slums in kenya. The genesis of slums is a social and governance issue. Somewhere in the kenyan DNA, the gene for social justice is mutated.

True......but here we are judging him by his records in that area, as a person seeking to take the leadership of this country. He failed miserably there.

Thanks for bringing in here the satellite images of two areas.
If you zoom in each one with serious eyes you will categorically notice what I asserted before.
That's in unplanned settlements there are semi crafted infrastructure and other amenities. Look at manzese you can even trace the roads, you can also see the telecom mast. Brother I'm talking this coz i participated in Community Infrastructure Upgrading Programmes in several countries. One challenge we faced in slums (unlike in unplanned settlements) was impossible to get even the narrow space for road to tarmac.
You will agree with me that in kibera all the roofs are of the same type and roofing materials as if are owned by the same building society. As a result all are affected by rust to the same extent.
If you look at manzese can see even the green, red, blue roof. This shows that the area accommodates people of different income levels.
Again the first orthofoto shows the high value properties which are adjacent to kibera not within. I tried to navigate on Google earth but never found them within the area.
I think you can again agree with me that the kibera situation is of its own kind. I getting hard to real imagine if more than 2mio watu can dwell in such area.

Many poor people pour into Dar es Salaam from the countryside every day, most of them in search of a new life. They set up huts made of wood or sleep on the streets. According to the United Nations about 70% of Dar es Salaam’s people live in slums. There is no medical care and the slums lack transportation services. On the other side there are the superrich, wealthy businessmen who can afford to live in luxurious houses along the coast or in the city’s noble districts.

Next time kabla utaje Kibera, Just remember , the whole of Dar outsite the CBD is basically one big slum slum---- yani Dar-is-slum
