Here is a poor man's summary of the Kenya police service:

i) Normal Police: Manage most work the people see like investigating burglaries,traffic control,managing normal protests, arresting thieves, keeping records of reported crimes etc.These hardworking men and women interact and solve a lot of the police related issues in the country.They have a blue uniform.

ii) Paramilitary: These are actually highly trained combat ready and rapidly deployable police officers capable of urban warfare, hostage rescue, air marshall, protection of the president, anti and counter terrorism, border patrol, working behind enemy lines, securing critical installations etc These men and women are trained in israel, britain and america by sayeret matkal, british sas and 75th ranger regiment of the us army. They include the General service unit and the Administration police. These units have military camouflage and military grade equipment.

iii)DCI (Directorate of criminal investigations): These are the highly trained investigators of the kenya police with advanced training from FBI and shin bet. They investigate organized crimes, terror links, drug cartels,high profile murder cases etc. These are the people who returned your smuggled gold to Tanzania. They are also the people who have made sure drug lords have run from Kenya to Dar es salaam. They will normally be in civilian wear majorly in suits.
