Rafael Nadal battles into semi-finals of French Open

Rafael Nadal remains on course to win a fifth French Open crown after he reached the semi-finals with a hard-fought win over fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro.

The world number two was in defiant mood as he fought his way to a 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 victory in two hours 34 minutes, and so moved closer to regaining the title he lost last year.It was the seventh time in seven matches that Nadal has seen off Amalgro and means that he has reached the semi-finals without losing a set yet again. .

Schiavone makes French Open final

Schiavone is through to her first Grand Slam final

Francesca Schiavone became the first Italian woman to reach a Grand Slam final after Elena Dementieva pulled out of their French Open semi-final with an injury.

Schiavone had just taken first set tie-break to lead 7-6 (7-3) on Court Philippe Chatrier when the Russian called it quits, and the 17th seed will play Jelena Jankovic or Sam Stosur in Saturday's final.

The 29-year-old Italian's obvious joy at reaching such a landmark was in stark contrast to her opponent, who saw yet another chance to win a first Grand Slam title disappear.

Dementieva, the 2004 runner-up, had said after her quarter-final win that she was struggling with a calf injury and she confirmed that a torn calf muscle was the reason for her semi-final withdrawal.

Sam Stosur beats Jelena Jankovic to reach Paris final

Stosur was a beaten semi-finalist at the 2009 French OpenAustralia's Sam Stosur stormed into her first Grand Slam final with a crushing win over fourth seed Jelena Jankovic at the French Open.

The 26-year-old from Brisbane followed up earlier wins over pre-tournament favourites Justine Henin and Serena Williams with a 6-1 6-2 demolition of Jankovic in 60 minutes.

Stosur will play Francesca Schiavone for the title on Saturday after the Italian became the first woman from her country to reach a Grand Slam final when Elena Dementieva retired from their semi-final.
