DECIMOMANNU, Italy (AFP) Twelve fighter jets from the United Arab Emirates, a key US ally, landed at an Italian base on Sunday ahead of their deployment to help enforce the no-fly zone over Libya.
The six F-16s and six Mirage planes, which were committed by UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahayan on Thursday, could be seen landing at the Decimomannu base on the island of Sardinia.
A former UAE air force commander said last week that his country had delayed its military deployment because of disagreements with the West over the unrest in Bahrain, where there is a Shiite-led revolt against the Sunni royal family.
Two Mirage fighter planes carried out Qatar's first mission over Libya accompanied by two French jets, the French military said Friday.

Cairo, Asharq Al-Awsat Independent Arab and Libyan sources have informed Asharq Al-Awsat that Libyan leader Colonel Gaddafi is seeking to convince the coalition forces to accept a deal that is being secretly discussed between Gaddafi delegates and a number of Arab and American parties. This deal would see Gaddafi stepping down from power, only to be replaced by his son Saif al-Islam, with a deadline being put in place for a peaceful transition of power.
A well-informed Libyan source told Asharq Al-Awsat that Saif al-Islam Gaddafi has held a number of secret meetings with officials in the French and British governments, discussing the idea of his replacing his father for a transitional period of between 2 3 years, in return for a comprehensive ceasefire and negotiating with the anti-Gaddafi rebels.
Asharq Al-Awsat learnt that Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, who has not appeared in public for almost a week, has been in contact with officials in the US, British, and Italian governments, in an attempt to submit the above-mentioned plan. Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said that his country will present an alternative diplomatic plan to the British French plan, on London on Tuesday.
The Italian Foreign Minister said that NATO will take control of the Libyan operation no latter than Monday, saying "NATO will take over Sunday or Monday." He also revealed that he would be participating in a meeting of NATO members in London that is scheduled for Tuesday. Frattini also revealed that he has spoken with Mahmoud Jibil, head of the Libyan National Transitional Council in Benghazi, who reassured him that the rebel council is committed to a united Libya, and will respect all of Libya's oil contracts.
Libyan Transitional Council spokesman Abdul Monem al-Houni told Asharq Al-Awsat that the Libyan rebels consider this proposal to replace Colonel Gaddafi with his son, Saif al-Islam, to be nothing more than an attempt to gain time and fool public opinion. He described this proposal as being nothing more than a test balloon being floated by Gaddafi, saying that in his opinion, Colonel Gaddafi has no intention of relinquishing power peacefully.

A boat carrying nearly 300 African migrants fleeing the fighting in Libya has arrived in Italy. Those on board were mostly Eritreans and Ethiopians.
It is believed to be the first boat to cross the Mediterranean from Libya to Italy since the Libyan rebels launched their campaign to oust Moammar Gadhafi, Libya's leader, last month. At least two more boats are reported on their way. An Ethiopian woman gave birth on the boat before it reached Italian shores. She and her baby were flown by Italian helicopter to a hospital on the island of Lampedusa. Another pregnant woman on board suffered a miscarriage.
Lampedusa, a small island off Italy's southern coast, has been overwhelmed by thousands who have fled Tunisian since January when the government there was overthrown.

Libyan rebels claim seizing Sirte
Libyan rebels are claiming to have captured the town of Sirte, the home of embattled Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi. The Reuters news agency on Monday quoted a rebel spokesman as saying that the town has fallen into the hands of anti-government fighters. The claim could not be independently verified.
The claim came as the rebels, bolstered by coalition air strikes, pushed westwards and seized control of the key towns of Bin Jawad, Ras Lanuf, Uqayla, Brega and Ajdabiya in a rapid advance along the coastline. Coalition air strikes against targets in Tripoli also resumed on Sunday night with explosions heard in the Libyan capital.
Al Jazeera's James Bays has been following the rebel offensive which has seen them claim a string of towns and key oil facilities since Friday. Our correspondent said Gaddafi's forces appeared to be withdrawing eastwards. Those still in Bin Jawad, the latest town to fall to rebels, surrendered without a fight, Bays said.
"It seems there has a been withdrawal and a surrender of Gaddafi forces, not a battle," Bays said. "They removed some of their vehicles that were not bombed further up the road but they removed these vehicles in haste." Rebels were intent on pressing onwards in the direction of Tripoli, Bays said.
Convoy leaves Sirte
But there were reports on Sunday of a column of military vehicles including truck-mounted anti-aircraft guns seen leaving Sirte in the direction of Tripoli, accompanied by dozens of civilian cars carrying families, according to a Reuters reporter in the vicinity. The rebels' advance along the coast has triggered exuberant celebrations in towns along the route such as Ajdabiya with rebel fighters firing their weapons in celebration.
In Ras Lanuf, a major oil exporting terminal, Bays said Gaddafi fighters appeared to have withdrawn with their heavy armour. "[There are] no signs of Gaddafi's forces here," Bays reported. "What they left behind is here, some of their weaponry is here, some of their armourments are here. But they have not left their tanks behind or any of their heavy armour, just some of the ammunition has been left behind, suggesting it was a pretty speedy retreat."
But there was renewed fighting on Sunday in the rebel-held western city of Misurata, which had endured days of bombardment, punctuated by coalition air strikes against pro-Gaddafi military targets. A rebel fighter told Reuters that rebels were fighting government forces in the centre of the town. "We heard tanks, mortars and light weapons being used. This is still going on now," he said by telephone. A resident told Reuters that eight people had been killed and 24 wounded in mortar attacks by government forces.
French and British warplanes launched strikes against government targets near Misurata on Saturday, temporarily halting the fighting. The French armed forces said around 20 French aircraft supported by an AWACS surveillance plane struck targets during the day, including five Galeb fighter jets and two MI-35 helicopters on the ground outside Misurata. British missile strikes also destroyed three armoured vehicles in Misurata and two more in Ajdabiya, the Royal Air Force said in a statement.
Ahmed Al Misrati, a pro-democracy activist, speaking from Misurata, told Al Jazeera that the town was "besieged from all sides". "Since morning [Misurata] has been under heavy gunfire and heavy bombardment ... by tanks or mortar shells," said Al Misrati. "They [Gaddafi troops] are also stationed in other rooftops, especially the high buildings."

07:55 Al Jazeera English Al Jazeera's Sue Turton in Benghazi reports that the opposition's National Council has claimed that Gaddafi's hometown of Sirte was taken at 11.30pm last night (local time) by opposition forces. Shamsi Abdul Mullah, a spokesman for the council, said that the city was found to be "unarmed" and opposition fighters did not encounter much resistance.
