"Rebels" in action

POSTED: Sunday, May 1, 2011

BENGHAZI, Libya (CNN) -- Artillery units loyal to Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi pounded rebel positions in Benghazi and Misrata on Sunday after his government announced that one of his sons and three grandchildren had died in a NATO airstrike.

Eyewitnesses in the embattled city of Misrata reported the shelling intensified about the same time as reports emerged of the strike, which a government spokesman said Gadhafi and his wife had survived. One man who spoke to CNN from about three miles from the city's center told CNN, "It's going to be like revenge."

The eyewitness reported significant damage and some casualties in Misrata, the country's third-largest city. The city remains in rebel hands, with no forces aligned with Gadhafi remaining in the city itself, he said.

Another witness, who agreed to be identified only as "Mohammed," said "very heavy shelling" targeted the coastal city's port.

"I have been here during all days of the conflict," he told CNN. "Last night was the worst." The bombardment had already left 17 dead and 40 injured on Saturday, he said.

Heavy gun and artillery fire could also be heard early Sunday throughout Benghazi, which is the hub for rebel forces and their transitional government.

Britain has ordered the expulsion of the Libyan ambassador to London, Omar Jelban, in retaliation for an attack on the British embassy by a pro-Gaddafi crowd in Tripoli.

Jelban has been given 24 hours to leave the country.

"I condemn the attacks on the British embassy premises in Tripoli as well as the diplomatic missions of other countries," said the foreign secretary, William Hague. "The Vienna convention requires the Gaddafi regime to protect diplomatic missions in Tripoli. By failing to do so that regime has once again breached its international responsibilities and obligations. I take the failure to protect such premises very seriously indeed."

The statement went on: "As a result, I have taken the decision to expel the Libyan ambassador. He is persona non grata pursuant to article 9 of the Vienna convention on diplomatic relations and has 24 hours to leave the country."

Migrants caught in Libya crossfire

Uploaded by AlJazeeraEnglish on 1 May 2011

In Libya, among those caught up in the fighting for the besieged city of Misurata are thousands of migrants from sub-Saharan Africa. International organisations have helped some to return home, but many more are stranded.

Al Jazeera's Omar Al Saleh reports from a refugee camp in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi.

NB: Comment by a racist poster on Youtube:

Everywhere negros go all they do is complain that whoever is helping them 'is not doing enough' , even when they are getting more help than many Libyans, and yet they eat each others food and fight over scraps like dogs. Kill those bastards before they try to get into Europe!

Pro-Gadhafi Crowds Vow Revenge for Deadly Strike

Crowds have rallied at the Tripoli compound of Moammar Gadhafi, after the government said the Libyan leader narrowly escaped a NATO airstrike that killed his youngest son and three grandchildren. NATO denies any individuals were targeted.

Supporters of Colonel Gadhafi demanded vengeance after the government announced the death of Saif al-Arab Gadhafi, and three of the leader's grandchildren.

The crowds of protesters also effectively served as a human shield for the colonel, who government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim said was in Saif al-Arab's Tripoli home when it was hit.

NATO violates UN Libya mandate: Russia

Mon May 2, 2011 1:8AM

Russia says NATO's disproportionate use of force in Libya has led to the death of civilians amid growing concerns that NATO is overstepping the remits of the UN mandate.

"The disproportional use of force, all the more so, beyond the mandate of UN Security Council Resolution No. 1973, which in no way stipulates the replacement of the Libyan leadership, is leading to harmful consequences and the death of civilians," according to a Russian Foreign Ministry statement quoted by RIA Novosti on Sunday.

The statement comes a day after Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi's youngest son, Saif al-Arab, and his three grandchildren were killed in an airstrike on a house in the Bab al-Aziziyah area of Tripoli.

Following the deadly attack, NATO's commander of Libya operations, Canadian Lieutenant-General Charles Bouchard, said the target was part of a strategy to hit command centers that threaten civilians.

"All NATO's targets are military in nature...We do not target individuals," he said in a statement.

The United Nations Security Council Resolution 1973, adopted March 17, allowed for NATO forces to pound positions belonging to Gaddafi regime in order to save civilians from attacks by Gaddafi troops.

Moscow expressed doubt that NATO airstrikes are solely aimed at protecting civilians, saying that the Saturday strike added further fuel to speculation that NATO seeks physical destruction of Gaddafi and his family members.

"Moscow perceives with growing alarm the reports about victims among civilians. The statements by the coalition members that the airstrikes against Libya are not aimed at physically destroying Muammar Gaddafi and members of his family cause serious doubts," the ministry said in the statement.

"We are again calling for strict compliance with the provisions of the decisions made by the international community on the Libyan conflict, for an immediate ceasefire and the start of a political settlement without any preconditions," the statement added.

The statement comes as NATO air attacks have also killed civilians in the eastern opposition-held areas of the country, contradicting its main pledge of protecting people.

...Moscow perceives with growing alarm the reports about victims among civilians...
Russia kwanza wajaribu kumalizana na wachechnya kabla ya kuanza kuwanyooshea vidole NATO. Wote (Russia na NATO) hakuna aliye msafi zaidi ya mwenzake!

Navy destroyer to bombard Gaddafi

SNN0326_01_1303095a.jpg

By DAVID WILLETTS, Defence Correspondent
Tuesday, 3 May 2011

BRITISH destroyer HMS Liverpool was last night preparing to shell targets in Libya and quicken the downfall of tyrant Colonel Gaddafi.

Defence chiefs have ordered the Type-42 Destroyer to start pounding command and control centres and boost the ill-equipped rebels.

Until now Britain has only used RAF Tornado and Typhoon warplanes and a nuclear submarine.

But sources close to the mission told The Sun a major Navy assault will begin this week. The source said: "Final details are being hammered out now but they are looking to strike over the next few days. When they do, Gaddafi won't know what's hit him."

HMS Liverpool has been helping to enforce a blockade of Libya to prevent arms being shipped to bolster Gaddafi's murderous offensive.

The crew have been forced to watch as the rebel stronghold in the coastal town of Misrata has been repeatedly hit by Gaddafi tanks and artillery.

At least six people were killed and dozens wounded.

Now the Navy will step in to the fight, although it is not known if Gaddafi command centres in Misrata will be the target. But the use of the ship will be seen as Nato ratcheting up the offensive.

A Navy source said: "We are going to step up the attack on Libya this week. Everyone is a bit nervous but we know that Gaddafi cannot stay as leader."
