The rise and fall of Colonel Muamar Gadaffi

Gadhafi's time is up, says NATO head

By Vicki Allen, Reuters May 8, 2011 10:01 AM

The head of the NATO military alliance said Sunday he was optimistic Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's "time is over," but said the conflict would require a political - not military - solution.

"We have stopped Gaddafi in his track. His time is running out. He's more and more isolated,"
NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told CNN's State of the Union program.

Rasmussen said with the pro-democracy "wind change in North Africa and the Middle East," the death of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden and the Taliban under pressure in Afghanistan, he was "very optimistic" that "Gaddafi's time is over."

NATO coalition aircraft have been bombing Libyan government military targets and enforcing a no-fly zone since March under a UN resolution.

But the operation has not kept scores from being killed in government attacks on pockets of rebellion in western Libya.

To break the stalemate between the rebels and pro-Gaddafi forces, Rasmussen said: "First of all we have to realize that there is no military solution. We will need a political solution."

Asked whether NATO's mission to protect civilians could be accomplished if Gaddafi stays, he said it was "hard to imagine the attacks, the outrageous and systematic attacks against Libyan people, will stop as long as Gaddafi remains in power."

U.S. President Barack Obama has called for Gaddafi's ouster and the United States led the first week of the NATO mission's bombing campaign but has since taken a back seat.

Asked on ABC's This Week if the United States will expand its role in Libya, Tom Donilon, U.S. national security advisor, said NATO had "all the assets that are needed to engage in civilian protection mission and they are engaging in it."

Gambia to seize multi-million dollar Libyan assets
(AFP) – 09 May 2011

BANJUL — The Gambian high court on Monday granted an application allowing the government to seize millions of dollars worth of Libyan assets in the tiny west African country.

Judge Awa Bah ruled that the Gambian goverment can take immediate possession and control of the Libya African Investment Company "until a government recognized by the United Nations is in place in Libya".

While the assets were not named in court, the investment company owns a multi-million dollar five-star hotel, the Jerma Beach, the Laico Atlantic Hotel in the capital, Banjul, said to be worth $18 million (12 million euros), and Dream Park, a children's amusement park.

"The court is convinced that the Libyan African Investment Company (Gambia) Limited is a creation of the Moamer Kadhafi-led government," Bah said.

"There is an urgent need to put in place interim measures to safeguard the assets and properties of the said company situated in The Gambia for the interest and benefit of the Libyan people."

Banjul last month said it was recognising the rebel Transitional National Council as the only legitimate body representing Libyan interests, and expelled Tripoli's diplomats while freezing all Libyan assets.

I have passed accross, the Russian news website, it point out abou romours that Gadaffi might have been killed in airstrike that killed his son!. Check it out here:May 9, 2011 — RT News line
My take: Was this the reason for washington to preempt, the declaration of Osama's death to kill off any attention had libya government decided to announce his death in that time so that to reduce criticism of NATO attack on him?.
did the Osama death announcement mean to sway away the public attention from attrocities committed by NATO in Libya?

if ni kweli dat will be very sad news to all africans in general.

Why?

Do you think Africans still need leaders who ruthlessly kill their own people for any reason?

If true...let him rest in hell!

I am an African (by any standard you may use) but I am not one of them who will be saddened by the passing of Gadhafi.
