The rise and fall of Colonel Muamar Gadaffi

Frankly Gaddafi akiuawa mimi wala sisikitiki.

Libya rape claim woman Eman al-Obeidi flees to Tunisia

Eman al-Obeidi, the Libyan woman who burst into a Tripoli hotel full of foreign journalists and claimed to have been raped by supporters of Col Muammar Gaddafi, has escaped to Tunisia. Ms Obeidi told CNN she crossed the border on Thursday, with the help of military officers who were defecting. She said she left Tripoli in a car in a head cover that revealed only one eye.

In March, she told journalists she had been held for two days and raped by 15 militia men loyal to the Libyan leader. Her case is the best-known of the conflict, but there have been many other reported cases of rape used as a weapon of war, observers say. Pictures of Ms Obeidi's forcible removal from the Rixos hotel by Libyan security officials were filmed on 26 March and shown worldwide. The Libyan government denies she was raped, and her alleged attackers have launched a legal case against her for defamation. Ms Obeidi is reported to have been taken to the French embassy in Tunis at the weekend, according to CNN.

British peer visits Libya to broker peace between Gaddafi regime and rebels

Lord Ahmed of Rotherham

A British peer has made a personal trip to the Libyan capital in an attempt to kickstart a peace process, warning of "genocide" if either loyalist forces, or rebels are seen to win the war.

Lord Ahmed of Rotherham, who has gained a reputation as a regional trouble shooter said widespread bloodshed was likely "if the government took control of the country or if the rebels did".

"If there is no solution and the tribes are fighting each other then God forbid it would be a disaster for us all," he said speaking among a gathering of tribal leaders.

Ahmed said the 1,400 plus sorties flown so far by Nato jets had achieved little. "And … if people continue to die because of this that is something I do not wish to have on my conscience."

Ahmed has criticised Britain's interventionism over the past decade. He was a staunch critic of the invasion of Iraq and has made trips to both Gaza and Sudan in an bid to broker peace.

"It is my wish to try to help the brothers who have fallen out to become friends again - to create peace and reconciliation with them. We do not want to see Libya become another Afghanistan," he said.

He said he would return to Libya with members from both sides of the House of Lords, describing this visit as a fact-finding mission. No meetings with senior regime officials were arranged.

"Some of my colleagues in Europe do not understand the tribal set-up of this part of the world. I am not sure whether Mr Sarkozy, or Mr Berlusconi have the answers."

TUNIS - Libyan rebels are leading an uprising in the suburbs of Tripoli after being supplied with light weapons by defecting security service officers, an opposition newspaper said on Monday.

The report, on the website of the opposition newspaper Brnieq, could not be independently verified.

The story quoted witnesses who said a full-scale uprising against the rule of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was taking place in the suburbs of Tripoli. It said protesters were preparing to head towards the city center.

Valerie Amos, the UN humanitarian chief, told the UN Security Council that all parties should pause fighting in Libya to allow food, medical supplies and other aid to be delivered to those in need.

Amos said sanctions against Libya are causing "immense human suffering" but did not go so far to call for a change in the sanctions imposed.
The last months of fighting, the breakdown of state infrastructure, and sanctions, are causing immense human suffering ... Sanctions are causing widespread shortages, paralyzing the country in ways which will impact gravely on the general population in the months ahead, particularly the poorest and most vulnerable.

Christina Adam, a legal officer at the International Organisation for Migration, comments on recent accusations against NATO forces in the Mediterranean of having ignored dozens of migrants fleeing north Africa by boat. Adam says international law strictly requires ship masters to rescue all persons found in distress at sea. But the situation "often becomes more difficult after the actual rescue happens."

if ni kweli dat will be very sad news to all africans in general.

kwa mtazamo wangu binfsi, ni kweli afrika nzima itasikitika kama ni kweli, but it is still a rumours.

Do you think Africans still need leaders who ruthlessly kill their own people for any reason?

If true...let him rest in hell!

'US-China oil conflict behind Libya war'

Tue May 10, 2011 8:7AM

The US has waged the Western coalition's war on Libya in an attempt to evict China from the oil-rich areas of the North African country, a former US Treasury official says.

The crisis in Libya is mostly a "CIA operation and the US government is trying to get China out of Libya because China has extensive energy investments in Libya," former Assistant Secretary to US Treasury Dr. Paul Craig Roberts told Press TV.

"The US is very disturbed by the recent reports from the International Monetary Fund that China will surpass the US as the number one economic power within 5 years," Roberts added.

Since the revolution against Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi's regime began in mid-February, tens of thousands of people have been killed and injured in clashes between Libyan revolutionaries and pro-Gaddafi forces.

Many civilians have also reportedly been killed since the Western coalition unleashed a major air campaign against the Libyan regime forces on March 19 under a UN mandate namely to "protect the Libyan population."

"For the same reason Washington is focused on Syria, because in Syria the Russians have a very large naval base in which they intend to keep aircraft carriers and Washington does not want the Russians with their navy in the Mediterranean," Roberts argued.

Since the beginning of the unrest in Syria in mid-March, scores of people have been killed across the country.

"What has happened is while Washington was caught off guard by the Arab protests in Tunisia, Egypt and Bahrain they quickly learned that they could use Arab protests as a cloak behind which to hide while China and Russia are evicted from the Mediterranean," the former US official went on to say.

The US' concerns about the crises in Libya and Syria have "nothing to do with humanitarian concerns. It has to do with evicting other world powers from the Mediterranean region," he concluded.

UN: Libya sanctions backfires on civilians

Tue May 10, 2011 2:32AM

Hank Flynn, Press TV, New York

Valerie Amos pulled no punches Monday as she briefed the UN Security Council on the situation in Libya.

The UN's Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs says that the fighting has created nothing short of a hell hole for civilians.

According to Amos' report -- humanitarian aid is pouring into the country -- mostly through its ports -- but even that is not without problems.

Some humanitarian ships intending to dock in Misrata have attacked -- keeping them from unloading their cargo of food and medical aid or leaving with refugees.

An overloaded boat carrying more than 600 Libyan refugees capsized on Friday, killing many. NATO and European Union officials are also struggling to explain why 62 Libyan refugees were left for more than two weeks to die on a boat as their supplies ran out.

Full humanitarian missions are established in the ports of Benghazi and Misrata -- but the UN has been chased from Tripoli following the ransacking of its offices there on May first.

Amos even indicated that some UN sanctions intended to choke Libyan leader Muhammar Qaddafi out of power may be hurting the Libyan people instead.

Special Envoy to Libya Abdullah Al-Khatib calls the possibility of a political solution slim since the two battling sides are far away from one another on terms -- so the UN is hoping for a temporary ceasefire.

Amos says that the need for a humanitarian solution gets only more dire as the fighting continues -- and she's calling for money -- saying that the UN has received less than half of what it asked for to provide aid to the struggling Libyan people.
