(CNN) -- Somalia's pirates have long made the country's coastline a no-go area for sailors, but two brutal attacks on resorts in neighboring Kenya have sparked fears the militants may have dramatically altered their tactics.
In recent years, reports of ships large and small being hijacked in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean by Somali pirates have become commonplace, with dozens of seafarers and their vessels held captive, in some cases for months.
But when the world's navies descended on the region in an attempt to protect shipping, the pirates found their grip on the area challenged.
And rather than face off against the might of highly-trained personnel and warships from the U.S. and dozens of other countries, some appear to have begun looking for easier targets, switching their attention from ships off the coast to holidaymakers across the border.
The golden sands and crystal blue waters of Kenya's Lamu Archipelago are straight out of the pages of a glossy travel magazine, the stuff of wealthy holidaymakers' dreams.
Tiny, exclusive resorts nestle alongside deserted beaches from which tourists can spot turtles, whale sharks and dolphins. The toughest challenge most visitors face is deciding which hammock to settle in.
But this slice of paradise exists cheek by jowl with the war-torn, lawless border region of Somalia, and last month the two worlds collided, with deadly consequences.
On September 11, the idyllic calm of the luxurious destination was shattered, when armed bandits broke in to the beachfront cottage where Britons Judith and David Tebbutt, both in their 50s, were staying.
David Tebbutt was shot dead while trying to resist the attack. His wife was grabbed and spirited away onboard the pirates' speedboat. She is believed to have been taken into Somalia.
And on October 1, pirates made another cross-border raid, this time snatching a French woman in her 60s from the holiday home on Manda Island where she lived for part of the year.
Kenyan officials said Kenyan navy personnel pursued the attackers in their high-speed boat, engaging in a shootout, but the gang managed to cross the border back into Somalia.
In the wake of the most recent attack, Britain's Foreign Office changed its advice to tourists heading for Kenya, warning against "all but essential travel to coastal areas within 150km of the Kenya-Somalia border," and cautioning that beachfront accommodation in the region is particularly vulnerable.
The U.S. State Department urges U.S. citizens to avoid travel all to Somalia, and warns American visitors to Kenya of previous incidents in which Westerners have been kidnapped and smuggled into Somalia.
Kenya Police spokesman Eric Kiraithe said it was likely resorts close to the border were seen as "soft targets" -- despite the presence of police and security guards -- an attractive proposition given the clampdown on 'traditional' pirate attacks.
"They certainly must have seen it as a soft target," he told CNN. "We know in the sea the entire international community has come to there, and it has become increasingly difficult for them -- and these are people looking for easy money."
Security analyst Will Geddes said the pirates' apparent change of tack was a worrying one -- and not just for tourists, but for the authorities in Kenya and Somalia -- because it showed that the attackers felt they could not be stopped by the police.
"The fact that the pirates are feeling that they are suitably uncontrolled by any infrastructure of law enforcement that [impedes] them from carrying out actions into tourist resorts," was of particular concern, he told CNN.
Geddes said Kenyan authorities needed to take action -- quickly -- to protect tourists, and the country's valuable tourist industry.
"Some big questions will now need to be asked to the Kenyan government as to what security measures they can now install to reassure the international community and also tourists visiting their country that they will be safe."

In audio recording released to Syrian television station, deposed Libyan leader warns against supporting Lybia's ruling transitional council.

BEIRUT - Deposed leader Muammar Gaddafi said leaders of the developing world who recognized Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC) that ousted him with the aid of NATO firepower would suffer a similar fate.

"If the power of [international] fleets give legitimacy, then let the rulers in the Third World be ready,"he said in an apparent reference to NATO's military support for NTC forces.

He made the comments in an audio recording obtained by Reuters on Thursday from Syria-based Arrai television. It was not clear when the message was recorded.

"To those who recognize this council, be ready for the creation of transitional councils imposed by the power of fleets to replace you one by one from now on," he said.

Gaddafi also called on Libyans to take to the streets, saying conditions in Libya were "unbearable".

"I urge all Libyan people to go out and march in their millions in all the squares, in all the cities and villages and oases," Gaddafi said. "Go peacefully ... be courageous, rise up, go to the streets, raise our green flags to the skies," he added.

Gaddafi has been on the run since NTC forces captured the Libyan capital Tripoli on Aug. 23. Despite several leads as to his whereabouts, he has eluded capture, along with two prominent sons. The NTC has mounted a manhunt to find Gaddafi that is focusing on the Sahara desert near the borders with Niger and Algeria.

Gaddafi said the NTC was illegitimate. "How did it get its legitimacy? Did the Libyan people elect them? Did the Libyan people appoint them?"

Arrai TV broadcast Gaddafi's last speech on Sept. 20.

We're inside one of the housing estates that Col Gaddafi built for the people of Sirte. Early this morning we watched tanks and rockets being fired by government volunteer forces into this housing estate. It was a tremendous barrage. Now we're inside it. The snipers who were here, firing back at that time, have been driven down almost towards to the coast, into much smaller pockets of Sirte.

These houses are completely full of holes. I can hear sporadic gunfire all around me as the government fighters try and go from house to house to find snipers who are there. There's a thick pall of black smoke from the burning buildings. It's been a dramatic day, a really big push for government forces.

Sirte is like a ghost city: there are very few people here now. The bombardment was so sustained this morning. This is a last cause for them (pro-Gaddafi forces): it's the last significant piece of territory they hold, and yet they've continued to fight. The fighters we've been going in with have taken significant casualties. The commander we stayed with last night was hit in the chest and died this morning.

News from various sources

Sirte: According to new reports Libyans lured NATO mercenaries towards a roadside bomb by raising a white flag, destroying three Mercenary vehicles and its occupants in the trap. Fighting continues in Southern Sirte therefore it is hard to get more information from sources connected with Libyan Defense Forces.
In the east front, NATO mercenaries made a small attack and were defeated. Thirteen (13) NATO mercenaries were killed, two tanks were destroyed, and the remaining mercenaries fled.
In the west front of Sirte, 4 tanks of rats were destroyed, and many NATO mercenaries are dead. Fighting is ongoing. This is 100 per cent confirmed news. The mother of all battles for Libya has started.
The battle started last night around 2 am GMT. NATO-mercenaries who initially had NATO air cover have faced many complicated traps by the Libyan Army.

Seems that on the south front of Sirte, they are defeated. Now the battle is for the west of Sirte. When we have reliable updates we will come back with more detailed news. The steadfast of Sirte and the courageous tribes will surprise the world.
A courageous member of the Werfalla Tribe in Sirte has blown himself up among the ranks of NATO-mercenaries: dozens of them died.

Bani Walid: Libyans in Bani Walid are attacking NATO check points in North Eastern Roads which lead to Sirte.

Zintan: A big division of formerly-mislead Zintan people have come and joined the honourable tribes of Libya to defend the NATO-mercenaries and colonialists. May they be the example that will show the road to other mislead Libyan people. These Zintan fighters also brought usefull information with them. And they swore that they will be the first to enter Tipoli and clean it from their former allies, the NATO-mercenaries.

Western Mountains: Volunteers of the tribes are attacking NATO-mercenaries in the night, every night, causing losses. Yesterday night they used missiles to bomb some strategic places of NATO-mercenaries.

Zuara: Intense fighting has also been reported in the coastal town of Zuara. Most NATO Mercenaries have left the town of Zuara to attack Sirte therefore making the town a favored pick for their inhuman and demonic designs.
At the same time, Libya's largest oil field refinery has been destroyed by the Libyan Defense Forces in an attempt to stop foreign aggressors from leaching and plundering Libyan resources. Libyan Jamahariya Government said that they will rebuild the refinery once Libya has been liberated from NATO and its Mercenaries.

Tripoli: More reports of fighting in Tripoli. Libyan Defense Forces attacked NATO Mercenaries. The Libyan Defense Forces used NATO Mercenary flags to cause huge confusion among the enemy.
A team of Jamahiriya resistance fighters have attacked the house of the Al-Qaeda leader, Abdel Hakim Belhadj. We still don't know if he is dead or alive. Another team is on the hunt for Mahmoud Jibril and many other teams are in the hunt for other traitors and members of the NTC.
Huge fighting is going on in Alhmedat, La Nwyel and Safeyat.

Here are some of the cities that are controlled by the Libyan Army and Libyan Moujaheeds: Sirte, Bani-Walid, Gadames, Tiji, Bar Al-Harush, Kufra, Tobruk, Al Baydam, Dermam, Al-Marld, Al-Biar, Al-Brega, Ras Lanuf, all oil wells and all of Southern Libya.
Green Resistance attacked Checkpoints in Benghazi and also attacked a hotel controlled by the rats.

ArraiTV confirms that the Sabha Green Resistance has shot down a transport plane carrying 200 rebels in the middle of desert.
Green resistance from Bani Walid, Sabha, and other areas of Libya are making their way to Sirte.
Sirte- rebels made a massive retreat after facing very heavy fighting. The Green Resistance fought the rats out of the city.

Morris Herman Green Resistance Report..........

There were large protests all across Tripoli. The people are waving green flags, and there are many green flags around the city. There are many clashes, from Fashloum to Gurgi, Bab al Aziziyah and Green Square.

Very heavy fighting is occuring at Green Square and Souq al Juma'a. In the Gurji area, 70 NTC rebels were killed and 4 pickup trucks were burnt. The Green Resistance in Tripoli has captured a large weapons supply warehouse, and found 30 light tanks and large stocks of weapons.
Also, Libyan "navy marines" have captured parts of the coastal areas and have wreaked a NATO ship as it was pulled into international waters.
Constant gunfire and explosions is heard in the city both at night and day. Life has become chaotic, and people are arrested at highways constantly without reason.

The NTC rebels have set up 27 jails near the Port, and constant screams of people can be heard across the area. NTC rebel commander Abdel Hakim Belhaj "al Qaeda" made a speech at a press conference at a hotel in Tripoli and announced that all must be disarmed. This was a declaration of war to all rival brigades. As reported previously, it was an explosive decision made by Belhaj.

The NTC Zintan rebel commander announced an arrest warrant for Belhaj and his brigade. Immediately, shoot outs began in the middle of the hotel. Belhaj survived that assassination attempt, and moved to the Hadba Military Airport.

Three NTC brigades called the Hasadi "al Qaeda" brigade, the Misrata Brigade and the Zintan brigade, made an alliance to kill NTC Abdel Hakim Belhaj "al Qaeda" brigade in Tripoli. They surrounded Habda Airport, and heaving fighting continued as eyewitnesses reported that hundreds of rebels died in clashes of NTC infighting

Medics say at least 12 anti-Gaddafi fighters have been killed and more than 120 others injured in the assault on Sirte. Ahmed Mohammed Abu Oud, the administrator of a nearby field hospital, said four ambulances had been destroyed by fire from Gaddafi forces, and two ambulance workers wounded.

Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr, reporting from the frontline, said NTC fighters were trying to advance into the city centre, targeting the Ouagadougou conference hall where Gaddafi used to receive world leaders. "Anti-Gaddafi fighters are at the perimeter of the hall, which is a stronghold of Gaddafi loyalists," she said
