Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will meet with a representative of the Libyan opposition on Monday, a source form Lavrov's delegation said. "The meeting between Sergei Lavrov and the Benghazi representative will be held in Moscow on Monday," the source said.

Rebels have established a Transitional National Council in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi. Several western states have recognized the council and even sent envoys to Benghazi.

Russia slams NATO strikes on Libya
Sat May 21, 2011 5:16AM

NATO says its fighter jets have destroyed eight Libyan warships in the ports of Tripoli, Al Khums and Sirt.
Russia has once again slammed NATO for its air strikes on Libya, calling for the deployment of international peacekeeping forces to end the violence in the North African country.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said Friday that “The actions of the coalition do not respect the UN Security Council Resolution No. 1973”, which authorized the enforcement of a no-fly zone to protect civilians.

Lukashevich said Russia believed NATO's aerial attacks killed civilians and destroyed Libya's infrastructure.

The Russian official also called for resolving the crisis in Libya through diplomatic and political channels “with the help of the peacekeeping potential of the UN and the African Union.”

Lukashevich emphasized that all decisions concerning the situation in Libya should be taken by the UN Security Council.

However, NATO spokeswoman Carmen Romero said on Saturday that NATO operations have weakened the ability of Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi's forces to attack civilians.

“We have the momentum -- we will prevent attacks and threats against civilians until the threat is removed. The evidence shows we are doing just that,” Romero said.

NATO military spokesman Wing Commander Mike Bracken also said NATO's campaign has confined the movement of Gaddafi forces and forced the embattled ruler to go into hiding.

The military alliance said on Friday its fighter jets had destroyed eight Libyan warships in the ports of Tripoli, Al Khums and Sirt.

Nato arrests Libya-bound oil tanker

Pressure increases to stop lifting of Ras Lanuf crude cargo; Ghanem in Vienna; TNC ‘to attend Opec meeting'

NATO this morning detained a tanker in Malta that was due to ship fuel from Italy to a port in western Libya, a senior Libyan source told Petroleum Economist. The Jupiter was destined for a port within the Qadhafi-held east and the well-placed sourced said it was carrying 12,750 tonnes of gasoline for use by the regime's military forces.

A Nato official told Petroleum Economist that the ship was boarded "and told it cannot deliver its gasoline because fuel is being diverted to regime forces". He added that the ship was now at anchor off Tripoli awaiting instruction from its owner.

Nato response

Nato added: "It is the Qadhafi regime which is depriving its own citizens of vehicle fuel by diverting reserves for military use. Nato naval forces can deny access to vessels entering or leaving Libyan ports if there is reliable intelligence to suggest that the vessel or its cargo will be used to support attacks or threats on civilians, either directly or indirectly."

And for the first time, Nato said UN Resolution 1973, which authorises military action to protect civilians from harm, could now cover the supply of fuel to the regime.

"UNSCR 1973 authorises all necessary measures to protect civilians and preventing the use of fuel for vehicles attacking civilians is within the mandate," Nato said.

A second vessel, the Cartegena, is still thought to be heading from Turkey to Zawiyah, in western Libya, carrying 42,000 tonnes of fuel for the regime. The source said it had been told to sail well south of Malta, amid fears that its cargo may also be interdicted. Although the tankers bill of lading states Tripoli, Lebanon, as its destination, the cargo is heading for Libya.

People need to be reminded that there was no shortage of medicine, food, fuel, water, good infrastructure in Libya before the mission "protecting civilians and civilize them" into western style democracy, the so called freedom and capitalism...Gaddafi called it Western thievery where big dog eats small dog.

Gaddafi gave them all those basic needs, and they thought the US and West could give them a better meal!!???

May be the reality starts to sink in.

European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton speaks during a news conference during her visit to Benghazi, May 22, 2011

The European Union has boosted the international recognition of the Libyan rebel leadership by opening an office Sunday in their eastern stronghold of Benghazi.

European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton was surrounded by a flock of rebel officials and reporters as she arrived in Benghazi to inaugurate the new E.U. office. She accepted a bouquet from a young girl wearing traditional dress and held talks with the head of the Libyan rebel National Transitional Council, Mustafa Abdul Jalil.

Ashton also made a few brief, public remarks.

"I am here today to explain and to be clear about not only the short-term support from the European Union, but about the breadth and the depth of our support."

PARIS - A French military spokesman says a French amphibious assault ship set sail from the port of Toulon last week, but he declined to confirm a French newspaper report that the helicopter-carrying ship was heading to battle in Libya.

Military spokesman Thierry Burkhard told The Associated Press that the ship, Le Tonnerre, left port on May 17. Burkhard described the vessel as a command and force projection ship.

The French Navy's website says the ship can carry up to 16 military helicopters.

French daily newspaper Le Figaro said in a story posted on its website Sunday that the Tonnerre was carrying 12 helicopters and was sailing for the Libyan coast.

Libya: Mugabe slams 'naive' Nigeria, South Africa and Gabon
20/05/2011 00:00:00 by Staff Reporter
Mugabe1.jpg

PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe says South Africa, Nigeria and Gabon were "naive" to vote for a United Nations Security Council resolution which has been used by Western countries to carry out a sustained bombardment of Libya.

"Our African countries were naïve, absolutely naïve, to vote with the West when the West had its interests, you know, its own motives ... ulterior motives," Mugabe said in an interview with the Southern Times newspaper.

"These motives include wanting to re-occupy our countries. They are in search of our resources, in search of political control. It's now the reversal of the freedoms that we attained through various struggles, in some cases political but in others armed struggles."

Here is a recap of the whole interview:

"We should by now have been very much aware that these aggressors and colonisers of yesterday had not repented, relented on their past ways of relating to us, and that they were still enemies,"

"We are seeing that achievement, that status of liberating Africa, now being reversed by the same people who colonised us yesterday, our erstwhile colonisers. They are coming back now using our own people and presenting to the world that it is we, the Africans, who would want to see change, when in fact they are using that pretence as a way of paving entry back into Africa, perhaps entry in search of resources -- oil or other forms of wealth."

On African Union

"It [African Union] should have at least protested by now, protested vigorously and caused the United Nations to have an emergency session ... But I understand that the exercise to get countries to meet has not succeeded.

"Our African countries don't seem to want to meet and discuss this vital issue on the absolutely devastating events that are happening to the north of us, and which require our immediate attention. Not all of us seem to be moved by them; or perhaps some of us support them? And, if we are in this state of silence, naturally the world will say we are expressing happiness with what is taking place."

On ICC
"This court seems to have been established for Africans. Though we have seen Europeans commit crimes of far greater magnitude than you can ever imagine, it's just the African leaders they are going for, or should I say leaders from the Third World, since they have also been trying leaders from lesser Europe, lesser European countries and so on," Mugabe said.

"We have seen greater offences committed by the likes of [George] Bush and [Tony] Blair when they attacked Iraq illegally and they used false reasons for that attack. They knew that the excuse they were proffering [weapons of mass destruction] was meant to use their troops as a way of entering Iraq and committing aggression, and Saddam [Hussein] is gone, and with him the oil too is gone.

"They are still at it, they said they were doing it to bring peace, to bring democracy. Where is the democracy? There is still lots of fighting going on in Iraq up to today. But anyway, the issue is who will ever try Blair and Bush? They are scot-free after committing that very serious act of aggression -- a criminal act of aggression."

On Gaddafi

Mugabe admitted Gaddafi's Libyan administration was "not a democratic system" but added: "We all recognised it. We recognised also that given time, there would be change in Libya as there has been change in other African countries. That's why his country was a legit member of the African Union.

On Sarkozy, Berlusconi and Cameron
"But there they are, again using false pretences to attack. And, who are in the forefront? It's France, led by Sarkozy; Italy led by Berlusconi; and Cameron of Britain. Sarkozy is the leader of the Three Musketeers. They are supposed, according to the Security Council resolution based on Chapter 7, to police the Libyan air zone and ensure that Libya does not use its aircraft to cause deaths of civilians.

"But what we are seeing now is that in fact through their bombings, more civilians are dying than those who would have died if Libya had been left to defend itself against the rebellion, the rebellious group that had risen around Benghazi.

"We know now, it is very clear that the motive is to overthrow the Libyan government, overthrow Gaddafi and have a free opportunity to enter Libya and of course, share the resources that they so direly need in Europe."

Mwanzoni walitegemea itakuwa mteremko.

Rumors za kuwa Gaddafi ameumia kwenye shambulio la NATO au Gaddafi is on his way to Venezuela wanaona hazifanyi kazi.

Walitegemea "mass defection" haitokei.

Bado kuna mtu anahitaji darubini kuona ukoloni unarudi kupitia mgongo wa "humanitarian missions za ku-save lives" and to prevent humanitarian crisis?
