NATO tries to kill Gaddafi: US Gen.
A top US commander involved in the military operations in Libya has admitted that NATO forces are seeking to kill Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi.

Admiral Samuel Locklear, commander of the NATO Joint Operations Command in Naples, said on Sunday that the military alliance has recently stepped up attacks to kill Gaddafi, The Telegraphreported.

Locklear's remarks were disclosed by the US House Representative Mike Turner, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, who has from the beginning of the Libya mission voiced opposition to military intervention in the North African country.

Turner has told Foreign Policy magazine that after a conversation with admiral Locklear, he now believes that NATO is overstepping the UN Resolution1973.

"I believe the scope that NATO is pursuing is beyond what is contemplated in civil protection, so they're exceeding the mission," Turner said.

The United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 1973 on March 17, which authorized all necessary measures to "protect civilians and civilian-populated areas under threat of attack" in Libya.

However, NATO has turned a blind eye to the framework defined in the resolution by carrying out attacks on civilian areas in Libya, killing dozens of people, including children.

Meanwhile, South African President Jacob Zuma has once again warned NATO against exceeding the terms of the UN resolution.

"The intention was not to authorize a campaign for regime change or political assassination" Zuma said in an opening speech at a four-hour closed-door meeting of the African Union panel on Libya in the South African capital Pretoria, according to the text of the speech.

Zuma urged both Gaddafi regime and revolutionary forces to resolve the issue diplomatically to end a deadly impasse which will potentially "destabilize the entire sub-region."

Zuma 'disappointed' with Gaddafi arrest warrant

President Jacob Zuma on Monday said he was disappointed by the International Criminal Court's (ICC) decision to issue an arrest warrant for Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

He said it was quite unfortunate that the ICC had taken this decision despite progress by the African Union (AU) ad-hoc committee.

On Sunday, African leaders said Gaddafi had agreed to stay out of peace negotiations in a bid to end Libya's political crisis.

The ICC issued arrest warrants for Gaddafi, one of his sons and Libya's intelligence chief on Monday afternoon. Judges in The Hague believe the trio committed crimes against opponents of the regime.

This decision comes on the 100th day of Nato-led operations in the volatile North African state and despite an assertion by Zuma and his delegation, there are growing fears of a fully-fledged civil war.

ICC chief prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo said war crimes in Libya will not stop until Gaddafi is arrested.

TRIPOLI, June 27 (Reuters) - Libya dismissed a move by the International Criminal Court to issue an arrest warrant for leader Muammar Gaddafi on Monday, rejecting the authority of the tribunal.

"Libya ... does not accept the decisions of the ICC which is a tool of the Western world to prosecute leaders in the Third World," Justice Minister Mohammed Al-Qamoodi told a news conference in Tripoli.

1.Ombaomba (Africa) toka lini mkawa treated equally?
2. Viongozi wenu wanakaa miaka sijui 40 madarakani na kugeuza nchi zao kama mali zao, so wacha nao yawakute

"NATO will not arrest Gaddafi" - official

BRUSSELS, June 28 (RIA Novosti)

NATO will not seek to arrest Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, as it is not within the organization's competence, an official spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued a warrant on Monday for Gaddafi's arrest. "The execution of the warrant is nevertheless not NATO's job. Our job is only to protect Libya's civilian population," NATO's senior spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said, adding that NATO would maintain military and political pressure on the Gaddafi regime.

The Hague-based ICC said on Monday it had "reasonable grounds to believe" that Gaddafi ordered the murders and persecution of civilians. Warrants were also issued for Gaddafi's son, Saif al-Islam, and intelligence chief Abdullah al-Sanussi. Thousands of people have been killed in the four-month uprising in Libya, whose current authorities have rejected the arrest warrants, saying they were based on "falsified charges."http://en.rian.ru/world/20110628/164897285.html
