Jihadists plot to take over Libya

U.S. steps up surveillance of suspects among rebel

Jihadists among the Libyan rebels revealed plans last week on the Internet to subvert the post-Moammar Gadhafi government and create an Islamist state, according to U.S. intelligence agencies.

U.S. officials said spy agencies are stepping up surveillance of Islamist-oriented elements among Libyan rebels. A government report circulated Tuesday said extremists were observed “strategizing” on Internet forums about how to set up an Islamist state in Libya after the regime of Col. Gadhafi is defeated.

“Several forum participants have suggested that, following a transitional stage, the battle should turn against secularist rebels and members of the [rebels’] Transitional National Council,”
the unclassified report stated.

Some U.S. officials sought to play down the remarks by noting that such Internet postings are not always accurate measures of jihadist plans.

The report said the jihadists’ strength and influence on the ground “are uncertain at this time.”

However, the report said the jihadist plotting coincided with the high-profile emergence of Abu Abdallah al-Sadiq, a former leader of the al Qaeda-linked Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG) and now a leading rebel. He is currently known as Abdel Hakim al-Khulidi Belhaj and led rebels in overrunning Col. Gadhafi’s Tripoli compound.

A U.S. official familiar with intelligence reports on the region said there are concerns that some LIFG members remain committed to al Qaeda and others may be temporarily renouncing their ties to the terrorist group for “show.”

“Some members of LIFG in the past had connections with al Qaeda in Sudan, Afghanistan or Pakistan, and others dropped their relationship with al Qaeda entirely,” the official said.

“It seems - from their statements and support for establishing a democracy in Libya - that this faction of LIFG does not support al Qaeda. We’ll definitely be watching to see whether this is for real or just for show.”

A defense official familiar with jihadist strategy said Islamists likely will emerge in power from the turmoil expected after the demise of the Gadhafi regime and the West will be partly to blame.

“We’re helping pave the way for them” through NATO airstrikes and other support, he said.

About 1,000 jihadists are operating covertly in Libya, Noman Benotman, a former Libyan al Qaeda member, told The Washington Times in March.

According to a translation of the forum exchanges, Libyan Islamists view the fall of Tripoli to rebels as the initial phase of a battle to take over the country.

Jihadists were urged to prepare for the next stage in the battle: taking on secular rebels and the interim National Transitional Council, sometimes called the Transitional National Council, the secular political organization that is mainly pro-democratic
.

The jihadists want to set up an Islamist state ruled by Shariah law.

There is a report that tonight or tomorrow Al-Jazeera TV network will give a false story with photos of the Libyan leader's death.
The events occur in the following order:
1. Tonight in Bani Walid heavy NATO bombing.
2. Than the mercenaries will assault the city.
3. The terrorist rats will announce that the Libyan leader has been captured and killed in the assault.
4. The goal of this new scam is to induce the Libyans to surrender.
A person who has direct contact to sources says that a group of well-trained professionals will try to "finish off" all members of the family of the leader. According to this person who does not wish to give his name, this group of mercenaries has orders to leave no family member alive, including the children.
Beni Walid families are living through terrible moments, totally besieged without water or food.
The people of Tripoli are seeing that Al Qaeda is everywhere in the streets. You can also see foreign troops of France, Britain, Italy, USA, etc. in the streets.
Mathaba assures all readers that Muammar Qaddafi is very well and in a strong and safe position and cannot be reached by NATO nor its ground cannon fodder.

Msishangae Gaddaf akiondolewa, NATO wakaweka Base hapo kwa kisingizio cha kuzuiya wale wenye msimamo mkali wasichukue nchi.

China offered $200 million in arms to Gaddafi (as late as July!)

China reportedly offered to sell at least $200 million worth of arms to Muammar al-Gaddafi's regime in its final weeks, against U.N. sanctions.

News DeskSeptember 5, 2011 05:38

CHINA offered to sell at least $200 million worth of arms to Muammar al-Gaddafi's regime in its final weeks, against U.N. sanctions, according to a Canadian newspaper which has obtained secret documents.

Canada's Globe and Mail newspaper reported on Sunday that Beijing offered huge stockpiles of rocket launchers, anti-tank missiles and portable surface-to-air missiles, to Gaddafi during the final months of his regime and held secret talks on shipping them through Algeria and South Africa,

Graeme Smith, a reporter for The Globe and Mail, said that the documents his newspaper posted were found by him in the trash in the Bab Akkarah neighborhood, where many Gaddafi regime officials lived, the New York Times reports.

They were on the green letterhead of a government procurement department, it reports. However, China has denied any such plan. "Chinese companies have not provided military products to Libya in any direct or indirect form," foreign ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told journalists.

The Canadian daily said state-controlled Chinese arms companies were ready to sell weapons and ammunition worth at least $200 million to Kadhafi in late July, despite UN sanctions, citing secret documents it had obtained.

The documents, published on the paper's website, do not confirm whether any military assistance was delivered.

They showed that Gaddafi's top security aides made a trip to Beijing in mid-July, where they met officials from China North Industries Corp. (Norinco); the China National Precision Machinery Import & Export Corp. (CPMIC); and China XinXing Import & Export Corp.

The Chinese companies offered the entire contents of their stockpiles for sale, and promised to manufacture more supplies if necessary, The Globe and Mail said.

Representatives of Gaddafi's regime visited China on July 16 and visited three state-owned weapons manufacturers, AFP reports. China has opposed the NATO military intervention in Libya but had agreed to an earlier United Nations resolution of a weapons embargo.

Omar Hariri, head of the Transitional National Council's military committee, told the Canadian newspaper that the documents explained the presence of brand-new weapons his men had encountered on the battlefield, the Sun Herald reports.

The documents, which were in Arabic, include a memo from Libyan security officials about a shopping trip to Beijing on July 16, and appear to show that state-controlled Chinese arms companies offered to sell $200 million worth of weapons, the New York Times reports.

A rebel military spokesman, Abdulrahman Busin, said the transitional government would seek accountability through appropriate international channels. Busin said that any country that had violated the sanctions would have poor prospects for business and other dealings with Libya, an oil-rich country, the New York Times reports.

"We have hard evidence of deals going on between China and Gaddafi, and we have all the documents to prove it," he said, adding that the rebels have other evidence, including documents and weapons found on the battlefield, showing that arms were supplied illegally to Colonel Gaddafi's forces by numerous other governments or companies.

"I can think of at least 10 off the top of my head," he said.

A senior NATO diplomat in Brussels discounted the report as highly unlikely, but said he was not familiar with the documents cited in the article, the New York Times reports.
