NATO Commander Says Resilience of Qaddafi Loyalists Is Surprising

WASHINGTON - The commander of NATO's air campaign in Libya has said that hundreds of organized fighters loyal to Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi pose a "resilient and fierce" threat in the two remaining pro-Qaddafi strongholds, and are exploiting the urban settings to complicate the alliance's mission to protect civilians.

Lt. Gen. Ralph J. Jodice II of the Air Force, at the NATO command center north of Bologna, Italy. He said Qaddafi loyalists were exploiting the urban setting, which put NATO at a disadvantage.

In the coastal city of Surt and the desert enclave of Bani Walid, pro-Qaddafi snipers on rooftops and loyalist gunmen in pickup trucks are terrorizing residents, killing some and intimidating many others, said the officer, Lt. Gen. Ralph J. Jodice II of the United States Air Force.

General Jodice said a mix of African mercenaries and Qaddafi loyalist troops have successfully sustained command-and-control and supply lines in staunch defense of the cities, despite a NATO air campaign that is now in its seventh month and a multipronged ground assault in Surt by anti-Qaddafi fighters.

"It's really been quite interesting how resilient and fierce they've been," General Jodice said in a telephone interview on Sunday from his command center just north of Bologna, Italy. "We're all surprised by the tenacity of the pro-Qaddafi forces. At this point, they might not see a way out."

General Jodice's comments, coming on Sunday as former rebel fighters battled their way into the heart of Surt and then were driven back by sniper and mortar fire, tempered the boasts of anti-Qaddafi forces that Surt would soon be theirs and once again underscored the limitations that have confronted NATO throughout the air campaign.

NATO's mandate to protect civilians who are threatened or have come under attack is complicated by the alliance's caution in striking targets - like buildings where snipers are hiding - that could result in the death or injury of civilians.

"The ability of NATO to affect the fighting inside the city is small," said a senior NATO diplomat on Monday who was not authorized to speak on the record. "The fight now is really between the forces on the ground."

Or as Air Chief Marshal Stephen Dalton, the chief of air staff for Britain's Royal Air Force, put it last week in reviewing the successes and shortcomings of the NATO military mission in Libya: "What air power has done has allowed the conditions to be set for that militia to then prove themselves capable of putting in place a good order and now, hopefully, a political regime."

While General Jodice and other NATO officials said that the stiff resistance in the two cities did not threaten to spread to other parts of Libya, it does underscore the need for the alliance's continued military involvement as the post-Qaddafi provisional government struggles to build its own security forces and protect civilians.

"NATO will continue to do the mission as long as needed, but no longer than that," General Jodice said, echoing statements from NATO defense ministers who met in Brussels last week.

General Jodice's command plays a pivotal role in a convoluted chain that starts with political orders from NATO headquarters in Brussels and passes through a military command center in Naples, Italy. General Jodice, a native of New Milford, N.J., oversees the delicate process of matching specific allied aircraft, armed with specific weapons, to specific targets to achieve the best results on the ground with the least risk to civilians.

More than 500 planners, analysts and operations specialists from 26 countries, including the non-NATO nations Sweden, Qatar, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, work from a small base set amid farms and cornfields near Bologna.

The alliance's pace of operations and number of targets attacked have declined steadily since midsummer, especially in the past two weeks as bad weather has grounded many missions at bases around the region.

Strike missions have dropped to about two dozen a day from 50 missions daily, and allied warplanes rarely drop their precision-guided bombs these days, allied officials say. Take the three-day period from last Friday through Sunday, for example.

On Friday, one vehicle staging area was attacked and destroyed in Surt, according to a NATO statement. On Saturday, there were no strikes. And on Sunday, three armed vehicles in Bani Walid were hit.

The United States is still flying an array of surveillance planes and remotely piloted Predator drones, particularly near Surt. But General Jodice said there was no coordination or intelligence-sharing between NATO and the anti-Qaddafi fighters, though British and French special forces troops, among other advisers on the ground in Libya, have for months helped train the former rebels and provided them with intelligence.

The advances by the anti-Qaddafi forces on Sunday came after three days of intense fighting that included some of the Libyan conflict's bloodiest battles to date. The former rebels seized a convention center and a hospital in Surt, both of which General Jodice said had been used as sniper nests and loyalist command posts.

General Jodice said in an e-mail on Monday that the Qaddafi loyalists in Surt "still show a willingness to fight, which continues to threaten the civilians remaining in the city." He said the fighters were "exploiting Surt's built-up and populated environment; they have nowhere else to go, they are reluctant to lay down their weapons and are trapping civilians inside the city, preventing them from leaving safely.

"The situation is extremely dynamic and NATO continues to monitor and act, when required, to protect civilians from attack or threat of attack."

Tuareg fighters in Mali preparing to join Libyan resistance
The spokesperson for the Tuareg rebel group Alliance (ADC) Hama Ag Sid'Ahmed has called reporters to notify that Tuaregs are readying up politically and militarily to join the resistance in Libya. Already Tuareg fighters are pouring in to Libya to fight NATO occupation and help with the liberation process. This comes as fighting continues in Sirte, the Libyan Defense Forces have managed to defend the town and cause heavy casualties to the Mercenaries of NATO.

NATO Mercenaries receive another defeat in Bani Walid

According to new reports NATO Mercenaries faced another devastating defeat in Bani Walid and fled after receiving heavy casualties. NATO Mercenaries have tried to occupy Bani Walid many times, but have faced defeats every time. Many fighters have laid down arms and some have gone home. Other fighters tried to go home in Misratah but were forced to go back to the front lines and fight because they were refused entry.

NATO Mercenary commander in Tripoli lays down arms and goes home

A top NATO Mercenary commander Mahdi al-Harati has laid down arms and has gone home to Ireland. Analysts believes this is due to inner fighting in Tripoli. Al-Harati was the deputy head of Tripoli Military Council which was formed by NATO, this is just the beginning of the end for Mercenaries, many fighters have laid down arms and refuse to fight anymore, but the die hard NATO loyalists are fighting amongst each other in Tripoli.

NATO Mercenaries said they would take Sirte in one day but now one week

NATO Mercenaries continued saying that Sirte would be taken by the end of the day, now that they have received heavy casualties they have stepped back and claim it would take another week. Reports indicate that Libyan flags are flying everywhere in the town, even civilians raising the Libyan flag, not fearing NATO bombs or Mercenary Tank Shells.

NATO Mercenaries flee Sirte University after receiving heavy casualties

After conceding a humiliating and disastrous defeat in SIRTE, NaTo+ tebels have no option other than coming up with these stories, of course to cover up the "sin" they have comitted in SIRTE.

HIVI kikao kilichoidhinisha NaTo wakavamie Afrika-Libya kwa kutumia 1973 resolution, kitakaa lini tena kufanya tathmini ya hali halisi huko Afrika-Libya kuona kama NaTo waendelee kuwepo ama watoke ?

After the last all out attack on Sirte
resulted in over 200 dead and over 1.000 wounded TNC fighters, and the withdrawal of TNC fighters loyal to Mahmud Jibril from the offensive against Sirte, the TNC is scrambling to regroup, calling all fighters to register in "The New Libyan Army". The call both reflects the fact that the TNC has no unified military leadership, the infighting between Belhadj, Jibril and other fractions inside the TNC and Tripoli Military Counsel, and not least the fact that NATO and the TNC are running low on reserves.

There are increasing reports of NATO, Qatari, Saudi, and Israeli Special Forces on the ground. Last night a group of 15 TNC fighters were killed outside Bani Walid. All of them were carrying Israeli Identification Documents. At 03.15 this morning, nsnbc received a report from Sirte. SAS paratroopers from the 22nd SAS Regiment out of Credenhill, UK, had entered Sirte to carry out a special operation. 16 of the SAS men were captured, and 44 of the elite soldiers were killed. It is not unlikely that the SAS operation was in preparation of an attack that would coincide with a humanitarian and medical aid operation that is currently prepared in negotiations between Libyan forces inside Sirte, the TNC, and the Red Cross.

Why should we start new threads while this is still relevant? This thread is all about the Libyan Crisis. Na tunachopost hapa ni news, videos, comments, banters, etc relating to the Libyan crisis. What is wrong with this? The fact that the thread was started 231 days ago does not make it irrelevant. Old is Gold. The Libyan crisis is not over yet and will not end soon.

Mbona kwenye jukwaa la siasa kuna threads mpaka za miaka ya 2007 na vilivyojadiliwa kule ndio tunaanza kuviona sasa? Historia huwa inajirudia. Miaka kumi ijayo tutakuja kuitafuta hii thread. Ni bora kuwa na thread moja inayojadili the same issue for even five years than kuwa na threads nyingi debating exactly the same issue.

My view is that anything relating to the Libyan crisis should be posted here so we can have consistence on this forum. Sidhani kama wapenzi wa jukwaa hili wanahitaji duplications of threads kama majukwaa mengine.

WHY THE WEST DON’T WANT GADHAFI IN POWER Last week we saw how some western nations spread untrue information about Gadhafi for the reason of removing him from power. Of recent, Gadhafi tried very hard to have good relations with NATO countries. They wanted him to cease research on nuclear and weapons of mass destruction and he complied. He stopped giving aid to IRA. He handed over the people who were involved in the Lockerbie bombing and went further to pay compensation to families of victims. In 1993 Libya started trade relations with the west and that was when many western companies started pouring in Libya and they began benefiting with oil and gas from Libya. He was given a lot of praises and was in their good books. But Gadhafi was not really playing according to their tune unlike many other leaders in Africa and Arabian penensula. He was not following their orders. He refused to let foreign troops on Libyan soil to guard him like many leaders do. And this was his first mistake. And that is why the west is plotting to remove Gadhafi so that they can appoint a puppet whom they would control and follow their orders obediently. History has shown this. And there are many examples that show how a leader who does not comply with the west is overthrown. The west has been trying ardently to overthrow the leaders like President Hugo Chaves of Venezuela, Fidel Castro of Cuba, Rafael Correa Delgado of Ecuador, Kim Jong-il of North Korea, Bashar Al Asad of Syria and Evo Morales of Bolivia. In the past the west had succeeded in toppling leaders like Mohamed Mossadeq of Iran, Muhamed Sukarno of Indonesia, Salvadore Allende of Chile, Jacob Arbenz of Guatemala, Sandinista of Nicaragua, Jean- Bertrand Aristid of Haiti, Patrice Lumumba of Congo Kwame Nkuruma of Ghana and Manuel Zerava of Honduras. They toppled these regiems not because of Democracy as they claim but to spread their power in the world. Harry Truman said in 1947, “We must do all we can until the whole world agrees to follow our system of democracy”. That is to accept American expansionism. And you will note that ubeberu always does not entertain an indigenous leaders who do not agree with their policies ie, To sell his country to western companies to exploit natural resources. Any leader who spends natural resources to develop his nation will always be seen as a traitor to their policies and thus is unfit to be a leader. Gadhafi has shown a bad example to the west by utilizing the wealth of Libya for the development of Libyan people. According to United Nations report, Libya was leading in Africa and has even exceeded some western countries. Life expectancy in Libya is 75 years. Infant mortality is 17 per 1000 births. While in Algeria it is 41 and Saudi Arabia 21. According to UNDP report the condition for women in Libya is better than Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia and Qatar. The only thing Gadhafi did was to refuse military assistance from NATO and USA. They had formed a military tactical troop for the defense of Arabian penensula and Mediterranean countries which Gadhafi refused their support. Under this agreement NATO warships would cruise the Mediterranean sea to provide Military support to countries like Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania and Israel. Libya and Syria are the only two countries which refused to join this support group. Libya also refused American defense aid under the American AFRICOM when it was formed in 2007.After all 47 African countries signed this treaty. Only Libya refused. And we African claim that we are celebrating our Independence from colonialism. There is another very important thing that Gadhafi did which has enraged the west. Gadhafi has given a lot of financial support in the development of Radio, Television, Telephone and communication technology to the African continent. Due to this WMAX project African countries can easily communicate. This program started in the 90s when 45 African countries had started using the RASCOM satellite for communication and our continent became linked via satellite. Before this, Africa was paying a heavy toll of 50,000,000 dollars every year for using intelsat in communicating with the outside world. Africa had requested a 400 million dollars loan from IMF to buy its own satellite but for 14 years nothing had materialized due to harsh conditions which were attached to the loan. Finally, Gadhafi donated 300 million dollars and ADB increased further 50 million and WADB added further 27 millions and Africa owned its own satellite. Africa now owns a modern communication satellite from December 27 2007. Western countries did not leave Gaddhafi alone for refusing them an easy gain of 500 million per year. Money which Africa was borrowing from them. Now you know why the west don’t want Gaddhafi in power in Libya. I shall continue giving you more information on war in Libya. Keep in touch.
