In order to understand the mobilising force behind the Muslim agitationagainst the government particularly in the years when the first Muslimpresident was in office one needs to trace the life of Sheikh Kassim bin Jumabin Khamis the brilliant sheikh of Tanzanian mainland pulpit politics. SheikhKassim bin Juma will go in history as the only sheikh in Tanzania who servedtwo presidents diligently. He protected Nyerere from Muslims by helping him toban the EAMWS and establish BAKWATA and later helped President Mwinyi tocontain and overcome Christian machinations against his leadership. SheikhKassim originating from Bagamoyo as a young man rose to prominence in early1960s soon after returning from studies in Pakistan. As a young boy SheikhKassim ran away from home took a dhow and came to Dar es Salaam. That was inearly 1950s.This daring attitude came to manifest in him in his adult life andcan be seen in the way Sheikh Kassim came to make utterly and equallyunpredictable decisions in his life which not only changed the politics of thetownship but also created problems and misery to many people and the Muslimcommunity as a whole. But yet in this enigma Muslims in the last years of hislife came to benefit from all that was Sheikh Kassim's strange personality. Sheikh Kassim was very approachable yet for those who did not know himhe looked bigger than life. He rubbed shoulders with the mighty of theTanzanian politics and yet the same man was at his at his baraza in Kariakoochatting and exchanging jokes and tit bits with the low of the lowest. Hispersonality whenever he was radiated each and everyone in the crowd. SheikhKassim had a fiery temper yet he was very forgiving easy to forget a quarreland patch up with whomever he had quarrelled with within a very short period oftime talking and laughing with him as if nothing had taken place between them.Sheikh Kassim was a brilliant orator. That was his greatest gift. JuliusNyerere came to know Sheikh Kassim's real personality very late in his life andby then it was very late for both of them to retract. Kassim felt betrayed bythe system he had supported throughout his life and Nyerere regretting why hehad built up a monster, a Frankstein which came to devour him happily. Kassim was taken to the zawiyya of SheikhUwesu one of the khalifa's of Tariqa Quadiriyya and Sheikh Uwesu enrolled himin his madras. His father Mzee Khamis came to Dar es Salaam to look for theboy. A story is told that when he entered the zawiyya at Gogo Street SheikhUwesu was teaching and Kassim was with the other boys listening to SheikhUwesu. Raising his head Sheikh Uwesu noticed a stranger walking into the zawiyyaand his face resembled young Kassim. He knew that was the father of the boy hehad recently enrolled. Sheikh Uwesu told Kassim's father that he should nottake the boy back to Bagamoyo but to let him stay at the zawiyya and study.Kassim's father obliged. Sheikh Kassim assumed a new name at the zawiyya andcame to be known as Daruweshi and for many years during his youth this namestuck to Sheikh Kassim.[1] Kassimwas not to leave Dar es Salaam and he came to be one of the very prominentpersonalities and an influential sheikh. Nyerere realising that Muslim sentimentsagainst his government could be articulated through Muslim organisations suchas the EAMWS whose patron was the Aga Khan, and Al Jamiatul Islamiyya fi Tanganyika and others Nyerere relied uponSheikh Kassim to dismantle these organisations and form a national Muslimorganisation with indigenous leadership of Muslims supportive to his rule. Thecrisis ensued as a result of this threw Muslims in a disarray unprecedented inthe history of Tanzania. The crisis culminated in the formation of NationalMuslim Council of Tanzania known by its Swahili acronym as BAKWATA. The rise ofSheikh Kassim and his attachment to the government and President Nyereretherefore went parallel with detention of very respectable Muslim scholars.This period was marked by mass arrests of Muslims who Nyerere thought wereagainst his government. The arrests and detentions were necessary to enableNyerere intimidate the Muslim leadership and in the same vein forge alliancewith new leadership of his own choice. Even in those days Ally Sykes was fluent in English, speaking with a very pleasant accent. Peter Colmore was an English aristocrat his father Major Horace Colmore was also in the army but died in 1937, before the war began in Europe.
Peter Colmore was at that time a Lieutenant and Aide De Camp to General Sir William Platt Commander in Chief of the East African Forces.
Ally Sykes was a Lance Corporal.
That meeting in that record shop was a good omen because later after the war their relationship would evolve around music and the business enterprise they we would build would have music as its basic foundation.
I remember as a young boy visiting Ally Sykes' office at Lindi Street with my father and seeing for the first time huge reel to reel tape deck playing very soothing music behind Ally Sykes' desk.
There were also stacks and stacks of records lying around. The room was air conditioned.
It was also the first time I saw an air condition.
It was one of the nicest rooms I have ever been to and to a young boy of about 10 years it was really something to wonder about.
After the war and general demobilization from the army Ally Sykes disembarked in Mombasa from the ship which was bringing ex service men back home.
It was a jump ship of sorts as he was supposed to go to Dar es Salaam.
Ally took a train from Mombasa station to Nairobi to seek for employment.
Ally did not want to go back home.
He had enough experience in Burma fighting the Japanese, he thought he was old enough to look after himself.
Peace had created new opportunities to those who wanted to settle in Kenya including Africans. Ally went to look for Peter Colmore...

Kwa nini huzungumzii manufaa ya Nyerere kutaifisha shule za misheni ili watu kama wewe nao wanufaike na elimu: matunda ya uhuru wetu? Shahidi wa utetezi na Mwanzilishi wa Baraza la Misikiti Tanganyika, Bilali Waikela (87), amedai mahakamani katika kesi inayomkabili Sheikh Issa Ponda na wenzake 49, kwamba Baba wa Taifa, Hayati Mwalimu Julius Nyerere na Rais wa kwanza wa Zanzibar, Shekhe Abeid Karume, walivunja Umoja wa Waislamu wa Af...rika Mashiriki.
Waikela alidai kuwa umoja huo ulianzishwa kwa lengo la kuwatetea na kuwasaidia Waislamu na kwamba Tanzania ilipata kiwanja cha Changombe Marcas kutoka kwa aliyekuwa Rais wa Misri.
Waikela ambaye ni shahidi wa 48 wa upande wa utetezi katika kesi hiyo alidai kuwa, umoja huo ulifutwa baada ya Karume kudanganywa kuwa wana mpango wa kufanya mapinduzi na kuwarudisha Waarabu Zanzibar.
Mwalimu Nyerere ndiye aliyemtuma Karume afanye hivyo na mwaka 1964 nilifungwa baada ya kukataa kupokea Shilingi 40,000 ili nikubali kuvunja umoja huo, na Kassim bin Juma, Adam Simba na Salehe Masasi waliotumiwa kuhamasisha watu kuvunja umoja huo, alidai.
Alidai kuwa ofisi za umoja huo zilifungwa hadi mwaka 1968 lilipoundwa Baraza la Waislamu Tanzania (Bakwata) na kukabidhiwa ofisi pamoja na mali zote kikiwamo kiwanja cha Changombe markazi kilichokuwa kimejengwa shule ya Waislamu.

Mie nimesoma vitabu vya Mohamed Said, Dr Ghassany, Dr Issa Ziddy, Proffessor Gary Thomas Burgess na wengineo wengi. Na anachokizungumza Mohamed Said na magwiji hawa historia ni sawa sawa hutakuta tofauti. Worse enough hata events ni sawa sawa. Vile vile sio tu kumsoma Mohamed Said nimekaa na wazee walioishi na historia ya Tanzania mfano mzee wetu Al-marhum Sheikh Nurdin Al-Shadhily (R.A), Mzee wetu Al-Marhum Sayyid Hassan Sheikh (R.A), Mzee wetu Al-Marhum Sayyid Ali Comorian (R.A), Mzee wetu Sayyid Ahmad Badawiy (Nanga iliyobakia). Hawa walikuwa wakiyazungumza na sisi tuliokuwa tunakaa nao tunawasikia (Najua nitamkumbusha mbali Mohamed). Ziada ya Mohamed Said ambayo mmungu atamlipa kwa hilo na zaidi ni kuyachukua na kuyaandika katika kitabu.
