Chance of Crocodiles in the sea!

The thread “Crocodile at Valentin” got me thinking- what’s the chance of swimming in the sea with a Croc? Well the biggest recorded Croc is a Seawater Croc at a massive 20ft+

Seawater Crocs have been known to kill Sharks-so now when I go for a paddle its not only Sharks I’m on the lookout for but Crocodiles.

A couple of years ago whilst snorkelling in the Red sea a 8-10 ft (gets bigger every time) shark swam by me & it totally s*** me- for some reason I did not panic. A couple of weeks late there was a fatal attack in the same area. Last year whilst in Cancun we noticed Crocs in the water in the lake/lagoon -not impossible for them to get into the sea!! Now I can’t get the thought of Croc “nibbling” at me -please someone reassure me.

Milesfromwood, there are indeed some scary things out there in the ocean, including overweight middle-aged men in Speedos. However, we wouldn't worry too much about the crocs.

Yes, there are saltwater crocodiles along the Caribbean coast of Mexico. However, to our knowledge there has never been a sighting or an incident of crocodile/man contact on any of the beaches in the Cancun to Tulumcorridor.

Although we're not experts, it is our understanding that saltwater crocodiles tend not to be found in the open sea or in freeflowing surf. They prefer the brackish calm waters of mangrove swamps, which is where you will find them in this area. We have seen crocodiles in the Cancun lagoon and in the mangrove swamps around Puerto Morelos, where the locals will throw them some chicken parts for your entertainment in exchange for a few pesos.

We also heard (but did not see) that crocodiles were a problem in Mahahual after Hurricane Dean last year. And once, several years ago, a lone crocodile wandered into the Yal-Ku Lagoon in Akumal and was promptly hauled away.

So, if you're going to be swimming on the popular beaches, it is an astronomically remote probability you'll see a crocodile. If you do, you'll be the first. And as for sharks, there has to our knowledge never been a sighting of a shark in the beach areas of Playa del Carmen. The rare sighting is reported out in the deep water near the reef. There has never been a reported shark attack along the coast of which we are aware. We're sorry to tell you you probably won't be in danger at any time while swimming off the beaches of Playa del Carmen other than from too much sun or too much alcohol.
