Malta: Jobs

Looking for jobs in Malta, sharing information about known vacancies.

Before posting please read these few basic advices.
I don't work in a recruitment agency nor in human resources, but I've been able to collect a few tips about this topic.

Last Update: 16/04/2013

Let's start saying that the economic situation is currently pretty good on the island compared to other European countries (Spain, Italy, Cyprus, Greece). This doesn't mean that you can expect people throwing job offers at you but that, if you really want to work, you can find something.
Malta is especially good for two kind of opportunities: seasonal jobs (waiter, barman, etc.), and specialized jobs, especially in IT (webdesigner, analyst, developer etc.). For other kind of occupation which require no specialization then it's hard to find something. I've seen people asking if they could find a job as truck driver, or electrician, etc.: I'm not saying that you can't, but the chances are quite low since Maltese people already fill these positions.

Summer jobs:
If you're looking for a summer job as a waiter, bartender etc., then the best thing is to come during April / May. The summer season kicks off in May so those are the months when hotels and bars start recruiting. You'll be able to find a job also later but this is the best time.
The salaries are quite low, usually a waiter is paid 4EUR per hour, and often you don't get any insurance. The cost of life is not high though, so you can have a decent life while spending summer here.
Best way to find a job is to come on the island and start asking around. If you want to work in an hotel, start searching all the hotels in Malta and send CVs.

Stable jobs:
If you're thinking of moving here not only for a few months but for a longer period, or even for good, then the situation changes.
First of all, you'll most probably need to know English; a few companies are based here but work only with customers from their own countries, but this is an uncommon situation. Also, in general it's required to have some kind of specialization. The main industry in Malta is the online gaming, with hundreds of companies located in Malta, and since they are mostly foreign companies the salaries are higher than the national average. If you don't have any specialization you still can find a job in customer service.
Other notable industries: English schools, restoration, and lately trading (forex, stocks...).

Things you should know:

  • Don't expect to find a job from abroad: very few companies hire someone who's not on the island already. And if you're looking for a job as waiter, barman, etc., then it becomes pretty much impossible to get it if you're not in Malta;
  • Send your CV in English: seriously, I've seen people asking if they could send it in their own language. For summer jobs it's possible to find a job also without speaking any English, but for better positions this is not possible;
  • If you're for an extra EU country you can find a summer job, it's not legal but there aren't many controls. For example I've got a few Brazilian friends who found a job in pubs even though the only place in Europe where they could legally work with their visa was Ireland;
  • Recruitment agencies can help but you get more chances sending the CV directly to the companies. I already mentioned sending the CVs to the hotels, but you can do the same with betting companies for example, after a search to check which ones are located in Malta. Since recruitment agencies keep a fee, many companies prefer to hire their personnel directly;
  • If you want to work in public administration you need to know Maltese. This is true also for lawyers, for example. Before applying for a job always check if this is a prerequisite;

Kazi professional kwa sasa nyingi zipo kwenye IT programming.

ok
Maombi ya kazi nilizozitaja unahitaji kuwa Japan. Hawana utamaduni wa kutafuta wafanyakazi wa nje.

Kuna field 4 tu ambazo ninajua zinatafuta wafanyakazi nje: nurses, (Ufilipino na Indonesia tu), Ualimu wa Kiingereza (America, UK), IT (India)
