The first batch of locomotives that will ply the Standard Gauge Railway, whose construction is almost complete, arrived in the country on Monday.

Kenya Ports Authority managing director Catherine Mturi-Wairi led the authority's staffs in offloading the first six locomotives after they docked at berth 11 in Mombasa.

The locomotives, sourced from China, was offloaded onto a rail track built at the berth and was still covered in white tarpaulin and will be unveiled by Transport CS James Macharia.

Kenya Railways managing director Atanas Maina said that the second batch of locomotives will arrive in the country next month.

"The production of passenger coaches is ongoing and are expected in the country next month or in March. We shall have four freight engines and two passenger locomotives," he said.

He said that over 600 kilometres of the SGR rail track, which includes a marshaling yard and train station exchanges, had been completed.

Earlier, Maina said KR had procured a total of 56 locomotives, 40 passenger coaches and 1,620 wagons as part of the rolling stock.

"The new railway line constitutes the first phase of the SGR project that aims to connect Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and South Sudan," he said.

Guys are undestimating the impact of sgr. Currently its takes a whole 24 hrs to get goods moving from Mombasa to Nrb. Sgr cuts this to like 6-8 hrs. Whats more, the safety records are markedly improved and saves our road network as well. I repeat, this is a game changer. Passenger trains will do about 4-5 hrs to Mombasa. Meaning you have breakfast in Nrb. Lunch in Mba.
I expect, reduced traffic accidents along the mbsa highway, reduced freight transport. From 80k per 40ft to around 50-60k.
That extra savings my friends can go to product improvement, additional jobs or even expansion of market reach.
Sgr is a game changer, particularly with cargo evacuation from the port. I honestly fear for the Dar port. It may suffer in the short run before they get their 400km/hr sgr on a $7b plus debt.

Hapo kwenye locomotives panatia mashaka kidogo, wakati dunia inaelekea kwenye locomotives za speed ya 400-500 km/hr nyie mmeimport za 100 km/hr, at least mngekuwa kati kwenye 200 km/hr.

Kuhusu mradi mzima.. umefanikiwa sana na unavutia, though nilitamani reli ingekuwa double tracks ila najua ni gharama sana na hapo mlipofika mnaweza kuongezea baadae.

Je mradi utafanikiwa kurudisha investment cost?? Hilo tuachie wafanyabiashara na viongozi..
Ule mradi wa ethiopia ni electric na perenger train inasonga at 160km/hr sisi wetu uko 120km/hr na ni diesel..

ushawai skia ule msemo, usishindane na ndovu kunya? pale mwanzoni mipango ya SGR ikianzishwa, Kenya ilikua haina umeme wa kujitosheleza hata kwa mahitaji ya kawaida, ndio maana tulichagua diesel(lakini tukaweka initial infrastructure ya future upgrade to electric),

kadri tunavyoenda tumeongeza umeme mwingi na kuna project nyingi zaidi zinaendelezwa ambazo zikikamilika tutakua na umeme wakutosha, sasa inawezekana kuanza hio upgrade, na mwishowe in future itakua tunasonga at 240km/hr

Chinese ambassador to Kenya Liu Xianfa told the Business Daily that President Uhuru Kenyatta supports the upgrade plans.

“We told the President this was possible, but we needed access to reliable power,” said Dr Xianfa. “If effected, it means we can have lunch in Nairobi and later be in Mombasa for dinner in the evening.”

Dr Xianfa reckons that the electric train will move at a speed of 240 kilometres per hour, up from the planned diesel engine speed of 120 kilometre per hour.

Reli ya kenya si double tracked lakini ni double decker - kumaanisha inabeba mizigo mara dufu, alafu kila baada ya kilometer kadhaa reli zinagawanyika na kuwa nyingi ili ziweze kupishana, alafu isitoshe zetu zitakua na electronic/ switching..... pale Nairobi wanajenga controlling station... Hii inamaanisha itakua na uwezo wa ku time train zote.. Hata kama ni single tracked, hakuna reli itakutana na mwenzake njiani, mara zote zitakua zinakutana zikiwa zile section ambazo zina reli nyingi..




Alafu achana na hizo kele nyingi unasikia wakicompare reli ya Ethiopia na ya Kenya... Ukiangalia jujuu inakaa Kenya imeibiwa, lakini ukija kwa details reli ya Ethiopia inaachwa hata kama ni electric.

And when are they commencing the construction of their sgr. They have been singing this for some time. The central line. Longer and cheaper than that for Kenya. No specs are out. No financier ama pia ni exim bank ya uchina. Ohh Kenya built there's on debt, Mara debt is increasing. Yet they are also still looking for the elusive debt. You would think there's will be fully paid by tz taxpayers.

The cost in Kenya includes cost for all the facilities along the way, the rolling stoke and locomotives, Kenya will bought 54 locomotives, Ethiopia 35...

all these these and many more are details that are bieng ignored by those who are trying to compare the two rails... any sane person can see the logic of why the kenyan one was more expensive once you look at the devil in the details..
