TCRA declares Tigo the fastest growing telco in Tanzania
Tigo Tanzania has become the second largest player in the Tanzanian telecom market with the highest growth rate, recent statistics by the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) have revealed.
The statistics detailing the ‘Performance in Tanzania’s Telecom Industry’ and recently released online by the authority for the trading period ending 2015 show that for the past two years, Tigo has recorded the fastest growth rate among other telecoms in the country.
TCRA statistics show that, out of the 6.7 million total industry growth, Tigo grew by 2.5 million which is equivalent to 37 percent, or in two years from 11.4 million, Tigo scooped 4.8 million which is equivalent to 42 percent, the highest growth rate in the telecom sector.
Under the trading period ending 2015, Tigo increased its traffic by 2.3 billion minutes while its total market grew by 2.8 billion, compared to Vodacom which dropped by 1.5 billion while Airtel grew by 1.5 billion. Tigo’s meteoric rise gave it 28% percent market share with its subscriber base rising to 11,115,991, effectively beating Airtel to the second position.
Airtel was relegated to the third position with a similar percentage market share but with 68,486 less than Tigo’s subscription numbers.
Tigo now is breathing down the neck of Vodacom that leads the pack with 32% market share, a drop from 45% that it recorded in December 2005-with 12,714,297 subscribers, according to TCRA figures.
Speaking on Tigo’s surge in growth, Tigo’s General Manager, Diego Gutierrez told this paper that the main drivers of the growth included innovation, digital financial initiatives, mammoth investments, and the launch of 4G LTE, the country’s fastest mobile internet connection and extensive network expansion.
Others, he outlined, are digital inclusion initiatives which include free access to the social media - Facebook in Kiswahili, Smartphone with menu in Kiswahili, free WhatsApp messaging application service.
On Tigo investment, Gutierrez said they have been investing about US $ 2 million per week mainly on network infrastructure, quality improvement and roll out of new sites. Closeness to the customers, Tigo has over 50 customer care shops countrywide, by far the biggest number in the industry and extensive network of 50,000 mobile money agents.

The government had allocated 20% of the shares on offer to foreigners, but it turned out Kenyans had much more interest. 800,000+ individual Kenyans put money. Na usitudanganye hio ndio sababu Tanzania hamjachangamkia hizi shares za Vodacom. I doubt even 1% of Tanzanians can read and understand financial statements of a big company.
This is what I was telling, even though GOK has a seat on board but Vodafone/Vodacom holds the last card. Ukumbuke those two companies are sisters, when Vodafone UK offload her shares to vodacom SA, it was like taking the money from left pocket, putting on right pocket.Vodaphone did some re-organization with Vodacom, transferring 35% of their shares to the South Africans.
So saa hii, Vodacom is the single largest shareholder with 35%. Meaning most decisions will be made by them. But GOK still has seats in the board.
But trust me most of the board decisions must be pro-government. They can't dare piss them off.
Mfano:
1. Contract ya security cameras together with 4G license worth tens of billions was given to Saf.
2. A few years ago, the government and banks was exploring ways to regulate Mpesa. This threat can come back any time.
3. As of this moment, there's a big discussion on whether to split Mpesa from Safaricom since it has become too big. If Safaricom loses GOK goodwill, this can happen easily and Safaricom's mobile money monopoly will be over.
