Barack Obama - Secret Service codename Renegade - is now the most guarded man on the planet.

Even when he goes to the loo, bodyguards stand outside it.

And when he travels by motorcade there are a dozen identical cars - so potential assassins won’t know which one he is in.

The President-elect will also have to get used to handing his glass to a Secret Service agent every time he has a drink outside the White House. The agent carries a small bag in which to pop the glass and later he destroys it.

The idea is to ensure that no unauthorized person has access to the Presidential DNA, but it is not clear how an enemy would use it.

Obama will be given a set of panic buttons: One for his pocket, one on his desk and one beside his bed. They are credit card-shaped and simply have to be squeezed to summon a posse of agents.

At one time, the President and Vice-President were given three-inch-high models of the Washington Monument to put beside their beds. They had simply to knock them over to summon the guards.

But the models were abandoned after Vice-President Dan Quayle - noted for being clumsy - knocked his over late one night while making love to his wife.

In seconds, the door burst open, the lights went on and Mrs Quayle was thrown out of bed to the floor as bodyguards flocked around her husband to ensure his safety

....mkuu sina uhakika, ila ngoja niweke mawazo yangu tu hapa:

....labda kuzuia watu kuweza kum-clone now and in the future!! 🙂

By John Ward, The Canadian Press

OTTAWA - Security for U.S. President Barack Obama's visit Thursday - from the armoured limo and rooftop snipers to bulletproof glass on Parliament Hill - are in sharp contrast to what passed for security a generation ago.

After all, it was a city where prime ministers walked to work, drove their own cars and even picked up a hitchhiker or two. Ordinary people could visit MPs' offices and reporters could walk into National Defence Headquarters and knock on a general's door for a chat.

Ottawa officials looked askance at the guards and guns that accompanied visiting presidents even back then.

Lester Pearson - one of those prime ministers who walked to work without a bodyguard - often told the story about inviting President Lyndon Johnson to the prime ministerial retreat at Harrington Lake, north of Ottawa, in 1967.

At one point, Pearson headed for the washroom, only to be confronted by a U.S. Secret Service agent.

"Who are you and where are you going?" the man demanded.

Pearson replied: "I'm the prime minister of Canada, I live here and I am about to go and have a leak."

Senator Colin Kenny was an aide to Pierre Trudeau in 1972, when President Richard Nixon visited Ottawa.

"That was an awful visit," Kenny recalls. "They wanted to put a phone in Trudeau's office, for God's sake.

"They wanted a phone that had a little picture of the White House on it. You just picked up the receiver and you got a White House operator, it went right to the White House switchboard. We said no."

Trudeau was probably the last prime minister to kick against the smothering security that today walls public figures away from the citizenry.

Kenny recalls Trudeau's last civilian driver, an ornery fellow named Dave.

"Dave did not like the Mounties at all," Kenny said. Dave perfected a method of needling the guards.

"He'd come to an orange light and he'd put his foot on the brake and the accelerator at the same time so his brake lights would show. The car behind would brake and then he'd shoot through the red light.

"That just drove the cops nuts."

Dave died a couple of years later. "The cops had a cop in that seat so quickly you wouldn't believe."

Amid one Canada Day throng on Parliament Hill, Trudeau tired of waiting for his car and escorts, and just walked away from the security detail into the crowd, Kenny said.

"We climbed over the fence and got down to the Chateau Laurier and got in a cab there and took it home. The detail sort of arrived an hour later and were furious."

In 1971, Alexei Kosygin, premier of the Soviet Union, visited Canada. After a meeting in the Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings, he and Trudeau decided to take a walk in the autumn sun to their lunch at the Chateau Laurier.

Moments later, a man darted from the crowd and pounced on Kosygin, dragging him down. Mounties and Russian security wrestled the man away and Trudeau escorted his shaken visitor to the hotel.

After seeing him to his room, Trudeau walked through the lobby, hailed a cab and went home alone.

Trudeau was known for spinning around town in his famous Mercedes sports car, with the Mounties trying to keep up.

One afternoon, on his way to the Harrington Lake retreat, he pulled the Mercedes up outside Kenny's cottage at nearby Meech Lake. As the two chatted, Kenny noticed a man sitting in the passenger seat, although he didn't recognize him.

A worried Mountie told him later that the fellow was a hitchhiker Trudeau had picked up along the road.

"The Mountie said, 'You've got to speak to him. We don't care about the hitchhiker. If he wants the guy to have a ride, tell him to get into the back seat of the police car, but not in the prime minister's car'."

Kenny said Trudeau was unapologetic.

"He said, 'Look you've got to be decent with these guys. I remember hitchhiking a lot and I was always grateful when somebody in a good car picked me up'."

But even as Trudeau teased his guards, the change toward greater security had begun.

Kenny traces it to the tragic spring of 1968 and the murders of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy.

"It was just too damn many assassinations in too short a time and that's what started to change things in a very big way."

Security tightened slowly at first. Plainclothes police officers, needing a way to tell their colleagues from the civilians, took to sticking ordinary map pins - simple push-pins with a small coloured ball on one end - in their lapels as a distinguishing mark, Kenny said.

"Of course, anyone with a box of pins could be a cop for a day."

Those pins have given way to an elaborate system of security badges. And easygoing security details who could lose their charges have given way to teams of professional watchers.

The shift is pretty much complete now. People hoping to see Obama - well-wishers and protesters alike - will be lucky to catch a fleeting glimpse as he trots into the Centre Block.

And Prime Minister Stephen Harper doesn't pick up hitchhikers.
