Kim's robbery may have triggered nightmares
An insider told Us Weekly that West "was having nightmares" about his wife's robbery in the weeks leading up to his hospitalization. "The robbery triggered everything," the source said. "Kim is his family and the only family he really has now. They took him in and embraced him. So seeing Kim traumatized did a major number on him." The insider added, "He really couldn't do his shows without her around. That's what made him worse. He didn't want to be away from her…[The robbery] was just as hard for him, but he tried to keep going. He would never have canceled the tour unless things were bad."
Is he having a nervous breakdown?
A source for Page Six painted a dire picture of West's situation, alleging the "Gold Digger" rapper is having a "nervous breakdown."
"He's surrounded by all these crazy people, but there's nobody he listens to or who can rein him in," the source said. "He's spiraling further and further out of control. Basically everything crazy he does is 'art'—canceling his tour is 'art'—he is becoming more and more unpredictable…[West has a] chaotic life—he often stays up and works for 48 hours at a time when he's on, and calls his team at 3 a.m. Kanye needs a stronger support system, he needs to take some time to fall to the ground and start from scratch again. He's so talented, but he's his own worst enemy."
But a separate source claimed the situation wasn't worth worrying about. "He's just exhausted. He's been working around the clock on fashion design, both on his own line and the Adidas line," the source said. "He's a notorious workaholic, so balancing both that work—which is extremely important to him—and the rigors of the tour every night. It really wore him out."
He feels abandoned by friends
West may feel abandoned by those closest to him, specifically Beyoncé and Jay Z. He's called the power couple out numerous times during his Saint Pablo tour. On Nov. 19, 2016, West told a sold out audience, "Beyoncé, I was hurt 'cause I heard that you said you wouldn't perform unless you won video of the year over me …Jay Z—call me, bruh." West continued, "You still ain't called me. Jay Z, call me…Jay Z: I know you got killers. Please don't send them at my head. Just call me. Talk to me like a man."
West previously chastised Jay Z for not visiting his family after the robbery. "Don't call me after the robbery and say, 'How you feelin'?' You wanna know how I'm feelin'? Come by the house," West fumed in October 2016. "Bring the kids by the house like we brothers. Our kids ain't never even played together."
A source previously told Page Six their friendship has evolved into more of a business arrangement. "Jay can't stand him," the insider said. "He looks at him as this crazy, eccentric motherf**ker he can tolerate in small doses. Kanye is a nut job. Everyone knows that." The source added that the pair collaborated on their Watch the Throne album only to increase their bottom lines. "[Jay Z] tolerated [West because] there was so much money to be made. Jay was like, 'I'm gonna knock this out. We're going to do a tour to bring in millions of dollars. I can tolerate that.
He's under 'spiritual attack'
West isn't just struggling with external pressures. Sources say he's battling inner demons as well. "He feels like he's under spiritual attack, and has been for a while," an insider told People. "It's not just the big things; it's smaller, quieter things, internal things. You might think that it's about Kim's robbery, and while that didn't help, that's not what's going on here. He's dealing with a lot more subtle issues."
The source continued, "He feels like it's a trying time for his spirit, but that can be a good thing. He isn't one to run away from these things. He leans in and listens, and comes away a stronger, better man. But it hurts him; his spirit is vexed…he's not the 'Ye that everyone knows."
Kimye has been on the rocks
Sources told People that even before the robbery, West and Kardashian weren't seeing eye to eye. "The last few months have been difficult for their marriage," a source said. "They bicker a lot and things are not great…[West has been] very difficult. He is exhausted and overwhelmed." The insider added that Kardashian isn't "thrilled" and seems "less patient" with him than she's been in the past, adding, "He needs to shape up for them to work out."
Though Kardashian rushed to be with West after he was hospitalized in California, she was allegedly disappointed that she had to do it because she'd been scheduled to make her first public appearance since her robbery the day West fell apart. Returning to the spotlight was "a huge deal for her," an insider said. "She had been so excited" about attending the Angel Ball in New York City with her mom and sisters, "but as soon as she landed, she turned right back around to be by Kanye's side. She had to go be
He's paranoid
TMZ reports that West's problems extend beyond dehydration and exhaustion. Sources claimed when West was hospitalized, he was convinced people were out to get him, including the doctors treating him at the time—and that he initially wouldn't even let any medical professionals touch him. What's more, insiders say his paranoia has been mounting for months.
November is a tough time of year for him
In addition to the trauma his family suffered when Kardashian was robbed, this time of year is reportedly tough for the "Power" emcee. A source said West is still reeling from the death of his beloved mom, Donda, in 2007. "His mother died in November, so this time of year always brings him a lot of pain," the insider told People. "He keeps that pain internalized, but sometimes will talk about how hard this time of year is for him. He works through the pain every November." Another source told Page Six, "His state of mind goes back a long way, perhaps to the death of his mother, which he never got over."
His marriage did a 180
Sources say West has been in a bad place ever since wife Kim Kardashian was robbed at gunpoint inside her hotel room in France in early October 2016. "[They] have been arguing a lot since the Paris robbery," a source told Page Six. "Kim has completely calmed down her life, but Kanye is stubbornly refusing to let fear get in the way of what he wants to do."
The issues may run deeper than that. "Kim has had a very rough time since the robbery," an insider told People. "It hasn't helped that Kanye has been touring. Their lives have been quite chaotic. It's been very trying for them both and not a good recipe for a happy marriage." The source continued, "Kim [was] usually the more stable and strong person in the marriage [before the robbery]. Kanye is used to leaning on her. Since Kim has had her own issues to deal with, the roles have been reversed. Kanye has had to stay strong to support Kim, and it's like he can't handle it anymore. It's like Kanye is falling apart now, because Kim hasn't been able to give him her full attention."
A source for People also downplayed the crisis, saying, "He went to the hospital at will under the advice of his physician," the insider said. "He's fine."
Some think he's faking it
Some sources think West is faking his breakdown to avoid having to pay up. "He had just canceled for no reason, no injury, no force majeure, so they were going to lose a bunch of money," a music industry insider told Page Six. "Kanye is crazy, but not crazy enough to not get his insurance money. [He] knows what he is doing. They don't pay out easily for this kind of thing with this kind of price tag." The source added, "I would think they would want to do an intense investigation and that this will be a disputed claim. When you're on the hook for an arena at that level—on top of money for marketing, promotion, set builds, staff on the road—it's tens of millions. It's gonna be a sticky situation. He went too far off with the rants. It was going to alienate his core fan base. There are real business people around him, including Kris Jenner and Kim Kardashian, who want the payday. They needed to preserve the brand this way."
Still, other sources tell Page Six that West's tour cancellation is legit. "That cancellation comes from people who have been a part of his inner circle for years," an insider insisted. "People are concerned about him. His physician made the call to check him into the hospital. People around him feel like it was time…for him to get help."
