Sulley Muntari and Kevin-Prince Boateng have been kicked out of Ghana's World Cup squad for indiscipline.
A statement on the Ghana Football Association website said both players "have been suspended indefinitely".
Boateng, of Schalke 04, has been expelled for "vulgar verbal insults targeted at coach Kwesi Appiah during the team's training session in Maceio".
AC Milan's Muntari has been punished for an "unprovoked physical attack on an executive committee member".
The Ghana FA statement added that the incident involving Muntari took place on Tuesday and named Moses Armah, who is a member of the team management, as the man assaulted by the 29-year-old midfielder.
And Boateng, a 27-year-old German-born midfielder, was said by the Ghana FA to have "showed no remorse for his actions".
The news comes one day after Ghana's government sent in excess of $3m (£1,8m) in a chartered plane to Brazil to pay the players' appearance fees.
The Black Stars had threatened to boycott Thursday's match against Portugal if they did not receive their money, prompting the government to take action.
Ghana could still have an outside chance of qualifying for the knockout phase of the tournament if they beat Portugal and there is a winner between the other Group G match between Germany and United States - although the Black Stars would also need to overtake their rivals' superior goal difference.
However, the-off-the field incidents are likely to overshadow events on the pitch and severely damage Ghanaian football's reputation.

Chaos in the Ghana camp, which began with the team demanding unpaid wages, has culminated in two players being sent home - just hours before the Black Stars face off against Portugal.
There's just a few hours remaining until Ghana face Portugal in one last bid to progress to the next round of the World Cup, but over the past few days, the team has been thrown into chaos. The disputes reached a head this morning, when coach Kwesi Appiah announced that Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sulley Muntari had been sacked.
On Tuesday, Boateng and Muntari fought during training. Ramifications escalated when Boateng then allegedly insulted coach Akwasi Appiah. As if that weren't enough, there are reports that Muntari assaulted a Ghana management committee member on Wednesday.
A wider rebellion also occurred on Tuesday, with much of the team protesting over monies owed. The Black Stars threatened to not make the trip to the capital, where they are set to play Portugal, unless the money was delivered. $3m, cash, was flown in on Wednesday and transported through the streets of Brasilla to the team's hotel.
Muntari started Ghana's two previous matches, but was already set to miss the Portugal match due to an accumulation of yellow cards. Boateng, who's already drawn criticism for "retiring" from international duty, only to return for the World Cup, did not start against the U.S., and played rather poorly against Germany. Jordan Ayew and Emmanuel Badu are the likely replacements, but with Ghana in such chaos, it's difficult to know what might occur in the next few hours.

Ghana's government has sent more than $3m (£1.8m) in cash by plane to Brazil to pay the appearance fees owed to the national team at the World Cup.
Deputy Sports Minister Joseph Yamin told Ghanaian radio station Citi FM the players "insisted" on cash payments.
He added: "The government had to mobilise the money and a chartered flight to Brazil."
Ghana must beat Portugal in their final Group G game on Thursday to have any chance of staying at the World Cup.
And even a win would not be enough to put Ghana through to the knockout phase if United States and Germany were to draw their match.
Earlier this week, there were rumours the Black Stars could boycott training ahead of the game if their demand for payment was not met.
As unrest grew in the Ghana camp, Ghana President John Dramani Mahama personally assured the players they would receive their money.
A statement from the Ghana Football Association said: "The government is pre-financing the payment of the Black Stars appearance fees, which will be reimbursed when Fifa's prize money for Ghana's participation in the World Cup is paid."

Cynically, all the United States and Germany need to do in their Group G clash on Thursday is sit down, pick some grass, have a nap, and do absolutely nothing. A 0-0 draw would see both teams through to the knockout round, no matter what Portugal or Ghana do in their match.
It's a scenario FIFA has done its best to prevent, after the infamous farce in Spain 1982 that saw an 80-minute kickabout between West Germany and Austria, sending Algeria home and bringing shame to both sides. Knowing a one-goal West German win would see both sides through, both sides sat on the ball after the goal was scored, despite the growing jeers from angry fans.
The "Non-Aggression Pact of Gijón," as it's known in Germany, is seen as one of the lowest points in World Cup history, making a mockery of the competition and depriving the tournament of seeing the underdog Algerians make history.
