Wenger rules out Arsenal summer departures

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has said that he won't be selling his top stars this summer as he plans to build for the future.

Arsene Wenger: Keeping faith with his side.

It has been suggested that the Gunners would cash in on Emmanuel Adebayor to help fund squad strengthening, but Wenger claims there will be no repeat of last summer when Mathieu Flamini and Alex Hleb both left the club.
"We lost Hleb and Flamini last summer and we have had to rebuild," said Wenger. "But we have done that now and the future looks bright. We don't want to have to rebuild again, so I want to keep all the players together for next season. I don't want to lose anyone.
"I want to add to the squad and have identified one or two targets. But identifying players and buying them are two different things.''
Arsenal have already bought Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen from Ajax for £10m and Wenger is also expected to sign a defensive midfielder, with Brazilian Felipe Melo and Barcelona's Yaya Toure linked.
However, the French boss won't be caught short before the start of the new season and plans to complete his summer transfer business as quickly as possible.
"Ideally I would like to bring everybody in before we start back in pre-season training in July. I don't want to leave it until the end of August," he added.
"We are at a stage where we need to convince people that this team does a lot of things right. It does not need to be transformed. When you go on a long unbeaten run in the Premier League and reach two semi-finals, common sense should tell you that.
"We have to take encouragement from what we have done in the season just gone.
"I am fed-up with people who think I have £100m in the bank yet don't want to spend it. How can people think that? "The pride of the club is in having moved to a new stadium while maintaining the club at the top level.
"The policy of the club is that they have backed me in what I do and the way I do it. We now have to be strong enough to stick to that. We cannot pump £100m into it, so we must keep faith in what we are doing."

Cesc Fabregas has once again played down any suggestion of him leaving Arsenal this summer.
Speculation regarding the midfielder's future resurfaced on Thursday as the Spaniard blasted the Gunners' lack of success in recent years.
The club captain admitted his disappointment at the 'impotence' at Emirates Stadium which has led to a four-year trophy drought.
Having already been strongly linked with a move to Barcelona or Real Madrid, his outburst only served to fuel rumours of an imminent exit.
However, Fabregas claims his comments were meant only as a rallying cry to those around him and insists he remains fully committed to the Arsenal cause.
Desire

"I'm not sure how many times I need to talk directly about my commitment to Arsenal as I continue to say the same thing over and over again, but it appears that every time I have spoken to the Spanish media recently, my words have bounced back to England, leaving question marks about my future," he told the club's official website.
"So, for anyone who is unclear or may have misunderstood what my position is, let me make myself absolutely crystal clear. I am wholeheartedly committed to Arsenal and my future lies with this great club.
"It is a fact that we have not won a trophy for four years and yes, I am angry about that, but that anger stems from the deep desire I have to win things with Arsenal.
"I care about this club and believe in this team. I am proud to captain this team and proud to wear the shirt. It really upsets me when people express my thoughts otherwise.
"The spirit in this squad is fantastic and we have the ability and mentality to compete on all fronts for silverware. Make no mistake, we are focused and determined to show that we are capable of achieving great things together."

Cesc Fabregas inists he is 'wholeheartedly committed to Arsenal'

Cesc Fabregas has issued a second statement in the space of just eight days to clarify his future following an outspoken interview with a Spanish news agency in which he outlined the "pride" he would feel at being targeted by Real Madrid or Barcelona.

Fabregas has been on international duty at the Confederations Cup in South Africa but has caused considerable concern with remarks in which he highlighted a deep frustration at Arsenal's "impotence" in failing to win a trophy for four years.
Perhaps more seriously, given his status as Arsenal captain, he was also quoted offering an unfavourable comparison with the camaraderie and communication in the Spain dressing room.

On Thursday, though, Fabregas attempted to draw a line under the situation by releasing a statement through Arsenal in which he emphatically committed himself to the club.
"For anyone who is unclear or may have misunderstood what my position is, let me make myself absolutely crystal clear," he said. "I am wholeheartedly committed to Arsenal and my future lies with this great club. The spirit in this squad is fantastic and we have the ability and mentality to compete on all fronts for silverware.
"I continue to say the same thing over and over again, but it appears that every time I have spoken to the Spanish media recently, my words have bounced back to England, leaving question marks about my future."
Despite his protestations, Fabregas must know that he is inviting speculation by speaking admiringly of Spain's leading two clubs. He has also made little attempt to hide his annoyance at Arsenal's recent results and reiterated that sentiment in his agreed statement on Thursday.
"It is a fact that we have not won a trophy for four years and yes, I am angry about that, but that anger stems from the deep deep desire I have to win things with Arsenal," he said.
"I care about this club and believe in this team. I am proud to captain this team and proud to wear the shirt. It really upsets me when people express my thoughts otherwise. Make no mistake, we are focussed and determined to show that we are capable of achieving great things together."
Behind all the words, the simple fact is that Arsene Wenger has received no offers from either Barcelona or Real Madrid for Fabregas and does not intend to sell any player this summer.
There have also been no enquiries for Emmanuel Adebayor, although AC Milan indicated that they will renew their interest should they fail to sign Wolfsburg forward Edin Dezko. "If we fail to get Dzeko then (Sevilla striker) Luis Fabiano could be an alternative - as could Adebayor," said Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani.

Silva urges Melo to join Arsenal

Former Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva says he has urged his Brazil team-mate Felipe Melo to join the Gunners this summer.

The Gunners are reported to have made a substantial offer for Fiorentina's 25-year-old holding midfielder.

"We heard rumours and he asked me. I said it's a fantastic club and if he's interested he should go without thinking," Silva told BBC Sport.

"He is exactly what they need - a powerful player with quality."

Gilberto, who left the Gunners for Panathinaikos in Greece last summer, added: "If they got him it would be great because he is a player they need at the moment.

"I'm sure if they got him it would be a good signing. I have told him Arsenal is a great club and I am sure next season they will improve."

The 32-year-old Silva, who spent six seasons with the Gunners, played alongside Melo in Brazil's Confederations Cup final win over the US and said he had been impressed with his side-kick throughout the tournament.

"He is a very good player," said Silva after his side's 3-2 win at Ellis Park on Sunday.

Do you think Melo would be a good buy for Arsenal?
"Felipe has shown in the national team that he has personality and quality.

"I am sure he has a lot more to grow as well. He is a young player, strong, powerful and has a good quality in his pass.

"My partnership with him works well and I hope we can carry on doing well for Brazil."

The Gunners are reported to face competition from La Liga and Champions League champions Barcelona for Melo's signature.

Melo has played only one season for Fiorentina after joining the Italian side from Spain's Almeria last summer.

He has a reputation as a fiery midfielder and in his first season in Serie A collected 17 yellow cards and three reds.

Arsenal Football Club is delighted to announce that England Under-21 international Kieran Gibbs has signed a new long-term contract extension with the Club.

Lambeth-born Kieran shot to prominence during the FA Youth Cup run to the Semi-Final in 2007. His performances earned him an appearance in the 2007/08 pre-season fixture against Barnet and, later, a start against Italian giants Inter Milan in the inaugural Emirates Cup in July 2007.

Gibbs made his full First Team debut the following season during the 2007/08 campaign, in the Carling Cup Fourth Round victory at Sheffield United in October 2007.

Kieran, who can operate as a left-back or in midfield, was a revelation last season, making 21 First Team appearances, including eight in the Premier League and four in the UEFA Champions League.

His performances during last season earned Kieran, still only 19, with a place in the England Under-21s squad, which then led to him becoming a regular in this summer's UEFA Under-21 Championships in Sweden, helping Stuart Pearce's England team reach the Final of the competition.

Manager Arsène Wenger said: "Kieran made such a great impact last season and the progress he made throughout the year was fantastic. Kieran is an intelligent player with huge quality and he proved last season with his performances that he has great potential. We're delighted that Kieran has committed his future to Arsenal and we're all excited to watch his future development at the Club."

Everyone at the Club is looking forward to Kieran's continued contribution and development with Arsenal for a long time to come.

Kieran joins Theo Walcott, Lukasz Fabianski, Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere, who have all signed new long-term extensions with the Club in the close season.
