The young Spanish defender, who turned 17 last week, joined Arsenal in the summer and already has high hopes for his future with the Club.

Ignasi featured nine times for Steve Bould's Under-18's and twice for Reserves team last season and also played an integral part for the Spain Under-16s during last season.

Barcelona Confident Of Landing Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas
The rumour may have rumbled on for a long time, but it could be set to become reality. A report in Spain suggests a number of key factors have aligned and that Fabregas will return to Barca next summer...

Barcelona believe that they will secure a deal to re-sign Cesc Fabregas from Arsenal for next season, according to a report in Sport.

The Gunners captain has already been the subject of intense interest from the club he left in 2003, but will reportedly make his long-awaited return next summer.

President Joan Laporta wants to strike a deal before the end of the current season so that Fabregas does not become a player who can be used as a pawn by one of the men vying to replace him at the helm in the forthcoming elections.

Sport is very close to the current Barca administration, and their report, which states that the player also wants a deal to be concluded, can be considered more than just hearsay.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is aware that he is set to lose Fabregas because only his request to chairman Peter Hill-Wood stopped the player leaving in August along with Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor.

The Catalan star's arrival would be hugely significant for Laporta, because it was in the months that the current president was campaigning to takeover at Camp Nou that the player left.

Now Cesc is wanted back, and the Blaugrana supremo believes that an agreement will be in place that all candidates for the elections next summer will agree upon. This will also stop rival Sandro Rosell from being able to sign the creative midfielder.

Fabregas knows that his grandfather wants to see him play in the Barca shirt as it was he who first took the Spain international to watch a game at Camp Nou when he was just nine months old.

It is that connection, allied with Barca's determination and Arsenal's inability to win silverware on a regular basis, that is set to cement the move.

Sport believe that Fabregas' recent statements, in which he said he is committed to the Gunners, are signals that he will give everything this term before leaving as a fans' favourite.

Arsene Wenger

11th October 2009
By Harry Pratt

ARSENE WENGER has been told that second best is no longer acceptable for Arsenal.

The blunt message for the Gunners' longest-serving and most-successful boss to end the club's four-year trophy drought – with immediate effect – comes directly from the Emirates hierarchy.

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis turned up the pressure on Frenchman Wenger, 59, by declaring: "It's absolutely our ambition to win a trophy this year. I couldn't be more clear on that.

"Second, third or fourth isn't good enough. We want to win something – this season – and we believe we have the squad to do that."

Since lifting the FA Cup in 2005, Wenger's men have lost a Champions League and Carling Cup fi nal while never finishing higher than third in the Premier League.

That failure to match brilliant football with silverware has often been put down to the fact Cesc Fabregas and Co are still a relatively young side.

But Gazidis, 45, insists that excuse will not wash with Arsenal's frustrated fans should they suffer another 12 months of underachievement.

The South African, appointed last November, added: "We have created and devel- oped a team playing fantastic football.

"It's wonderful to watch and very exciting at times.

"We've spoken about the group's potential. Now – and by now I mean this season – it's very important for us to
focus strongly on winning something for the fans. They deserve it.

We can talk about football as a business but, fundamentally, this club exists for the fans – and they don't care about fi nancial reports, they care about what happens on the pitch."

Off the field, meanwhile, Gazidis has played down suggestions that a hostile takeover scrap involving American Stan
Kroenke, 62, and Russian Alisher Usmanov, 56, is about to kick off.

Only last month Kroenke, who is on the Gunners' board, increased his shareholding to 28.7 per cent, edging ever closer to the 29.9 per cent which forces a formal bid.

But while Usmanov‘s Red and White Securities group, with a 25.1 per cent stake, remains in the wings, the situation in and around the boardroom would appear on a knife-edge.

Not so, says Gazidis, as he claims all Arsenal's major powerbrokers, including ousted director Lady Nina Bracewell- Smith, 54, – whose 15.9 per cent share will be pivotal in any battle – are still pulling in one direction.

The ex-Major League Soccer supremo added: "I'm not sure it's true either is looking to take over.

"If they were, I'd assume they would increase their holding to 30 per cent.

"The club will continue to function well regard- less of who owns Arsenal today or tomorrow.

"We're not relying on outside investment for financial stability.

"None of our shareholders believe an owner is bigger than the club."

Arsène Wenger will welcome back Manuel Almunia for Saturday’s clash with Birmingham but Arsenal have fresh injury worries as they resume their Premier League campaign.

Almunia has missed six games with a chest infection but could replace Vito Mannone between the posts this weekend.

However Nicklas Bendtner, Gael Clichy, Carlos Vela and Eduardo will not be available and Lukasz Fabianksi will have to wait a little longer for his comeback after a minor setback in his recovery from knee surgery.

“Some players are not even back yet [from international duty],” explained Wenger at his pre-match press conference.

“Vela has not landed, so he will not be involved. We lost Nicklas Bendtner today in training from a recurrence of his groin. Eduardo is not back yet, because he still has a [thigh] injury.

“Fabianski is not completely back,” added Wenger. “We hope he will be very soon, because he has trained normally. Gael Clichy has a small [ankle] injury, and I leave him out completely tomorrow, but Abou Diaby should be okay.

“We have a few knocks and bruises which we discovered in training when the players come back. But Almunia is back in the squad and available. Cesc Fabregas had a few personal issues but they are going better now. He is available for tomorrow. Arshavin is back and available as well.”

Samir Nasri, Denilson and Johan Djourou are the three other names on Arsenal’s injury list and the Frenchman could be back in time for the North London derby at the end of October.

“Nasri is not back yet; he is still two weeks from playing competitive football,” confirmed Wenger.

Wenger dismisses defeats as "accidents"

By Soccernet staff

October 16, 2009

Arsene Wenger insists Arsenal's two defeats in the Premier League have been "accidents''.

weng-275.jpg

Wenger's side lost at Old Trafford and at Eastlands.

The Gunners return to action following the international break with the visit of Birmingham on tomorrow, before then heading to Holland for a Champions League clash against AZ Alkmaar.
Arsenal have responded well since successive losses to both Manchester clubs, putting together a run of six consecutive victories in all competitions and they are currently the leading scorers in the top flight.

The Gunners are now up into fifth place, but could move to within three points of leaders Chelsea should they win their game in hand, at home to Bolton, which has yet to be re-arranged.

Wenger feels his young side have shown great character to produce such a response following what were difficult results to swallow either side of the last international break.
"I think this year, more than ever, those two defeats were an accident,'' the Arsenal manager said. "There is a realisation that we have the quality - it is not as if we came out of those games thinking we were not good enough, and in fact they reinforced our belief and desire.
"We responded very well. I know we have the quality, so those are strong basic ingredients to do well.''

Wenger is in no doubt of the importance of continued strong performances in front of the 60,000-strong Gunners faithful, with north London rivals Tottenham due to visit at the end of the month.

"We know that our season will be decided at home,'' declared the Arsenal manager. "We have the ability to win anywhere, but how well we deal with opponents like Blackburn will decide things.

"We need to keep our focus high and approach each game with the same desire.''
