great .... sasa basi ni wakati gani hasa inapaswa kuweka overdrive off .... pia inafaida gani kuweka OD OFF?

Overdrive. Wheres a button on your gear shifter most likely. You want the overdrive to be on, especially for highway usage. Its a built in extra gear, basically, that put the car at low rps in top gear.

Overdrive on ni pale (kwa wale button ziko kwenye gear za chini pembeni sina uhakika kwa staff gear) button inapokuwa ndani na maana umeikandamiza ndani au umeiminyia ndani na OD off pale inapotoka nje. Kazi yake OD on huifanya engine izunguke kidogo lakini mwendo kasi uwe mkubwa na kuifanya gari isile mafuta sana. It best perform at a speed more than 70km/hr. If you are driving a car with revolution per min rpm scale on your dashbody put OD off and drive till 100 km/hr while checking rpm scale then switch OD on at the same speed you will find the rpm scale is sharply dropping down and the car speed increases slightly. If two similar engines run a cars at the same velocity but one with low rpm whilst the other with high rpm, consequently the one with high rpm will consume more fuel than with low rpm at the same velocity.

Automatic transmission Drive

P=PARK:
The gear selector should be in this position when the car is parked as it typically locks the transmission so that the car cannot move. In conjunction with this, the parking brake (hand brake) may also be applied. On most cars, the engine cannot be started unless the lever is in this (or 'N') position.

R
=REVERSE:
Selecting this position allows the vehicle to be driven in the reverse (backwards) direction.

N
=NEUTRAL:
In this position, the engine is disconnected from the drive train (gears) and the vehicle will not be propelled in either direction when the gas (accelerator) pedal is pressed. The wheels are not locked and the vehicle will be able to roll downhill if the brake pedal is not pressed.

D
=DRIVE:
This is the position that is typically used when the vehicle is being driven. As the vehicle increases (or decreases) in speed, the automatic gear box will select the correct gear for both speed and road conditions.

=GEAR 2:
Typically, automatic gear boxes have 3 of 4 forward gears, so some vehicles may have both 2 and 3 marked on the hear selector. By using this position, the driver 'locks' the transmission in a lower gear so that the engine will run with increased revolutions. This is useful when rapid acceleration is desired. It should be noted that maintaining high revolutions in lower gears will increase the fuel consumption of the vehicle and also the stresses on the vehicle and passengers. It should therefore be used for short periods only.

L
=LOW:
(May be indicated by '1') this is the lowest gear (or 1st gear) available. This position is useful when the vehicle needs to negotiate difficult terrain (such as a steep incline with a poor surface). For downward slopes, the LOW gear provides additional braking through the engine.

OD
=OVERDRIVE:
For vehicles fitted with this option, an extra gear is provided that has a lower ratio than the normal top gear. The power output delivered by this gear is low in comparison to the normal gears and is used for high speed cruising (on interstates / motorways etc). Engine revolutions are reduced, as are noise levels. Fuel consumption is improved.
 
How Automatic Transmissions Works with Overdrive


Overdrive


By definition, an overdrive has a faster output speed than input speed. It's a speed increase -- the opposite of a reduction. In this transmission, engaging the overdrive accomplishes two things at once. If you read How Torque Converters Work, you learned about lockup torque converters. In order to improve efficiency, some cars have a mechanism that locks up the torque converter so that the output of the engine goes straight to the transmission.

In this transmission, when overdrive is engaged, a shaft that is attached to the housing of the torque converter (which is bolted to the flywheel of the engine) is connected by clutch to the planet carrier. The small sun gear freewheels, and the larger sun gear is held by the overdrive band. Nothing is connected to the turbine; the only input comes from the converter housing. Let's go back to our chart again, this time with the planet carrier for input, the sun gear fixed and the ring gear for output.


Ratio = 1 / (1 + S/R) = 1 / ( 1 + 36/72) = 0.67:1

So the output spins once for every two-thirds of a rotation of the engine. If the engine is turning at 2000 rotations per minute (RPM), the output speed is 3000 RPM. This allows cars to drive at freeway speed while the engine speed stays nice and slow

Swali langu ni kwamba ni wakati gani hii O/D inakuwa inafanya kazi; ni pale ambapo ukiibonyeza na kusomeka kwenye Dashboard iko Off au isiposomeka kwenye Dashboard.

Maana nimewahi wauliza mafundi kadhaa hakuna aliyewahi nipa jibu la uhakika.

Siijui kwa undani zaidi ila nimewahi kuitumia mara kadhaa. Unapobonyeza kitufe cha O/D, itasomeka kwenye dashboard yako O/D OFF. Hapo inakuwa iko ON kwa gari nilizowahi kuendesha. Mara nyingi ninapokuwa kwenye mwendokasi na nahitaji nguvu na mwendo zaidi wa injini, huwa nabonyeza hiyo O/D, kama kuna gari mbele yangi nitaipita kama imesimama. Nadhani matumizi yake yanahusika na mwendokasi pia ila ukiwa na mwendo wa kawaida sidhani kama inafanya kazi, ngoja wenye uelewa waje watujuze vizuri.
