Freemasonry is a fraternal organisation. Arising from obscure origins (theorised to be anywhere from the time of the building of King Solomon's Temple to the mid-1600s), it now exists in various forms all over the world, and claims millions of members. All of these various forms share moral and metaphysical ideals, which include in most cases a constitutional declaration of belief in a Supreme Being.


The fraternity is administratively organised into Grand Lodges (or sometimes Orients) that each govern their own jurisdiction, which consists of subordinate (or constituent) Lodges. Grand Lodges recognise each other through a process of landmarks and regularity. There are also appendant bodies, which are organisations related to the main branch of Freemasonry, but with their own independent administration.

Freemasonry uses the metaphors of operative stonemasons' tools and implements, against the allegorical backdrop of the building of King Solomon's Temple, to convey what is most generally defined as "a system of morality veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols."

DUEGARD OF AN ENTERED APPRENTICE

The Duegard of an Entered Apprentice represents the position of the hand when taking the oath of an Entered Apprentice, "my left hand supporting the Bible and my right hand resting thereon."

SIGN OF AN ENTERED APPRENTICE

The sign of the Entered Apprentice alludes to the penalty of the Entered Apprentice's obligation. The sign is made by drawing the right hand rapidly across the neck as shown on the left. The penalty that the sign alludes to is, "having my throat cut across, my tongue torn out by its roots, and my body buried in the rough sands of the sea at low water mark, where the tide ebbs and flows twice in twenty-four hours, should I ever knowingly violate this my Entered Apprentice obligation."

Explanation of the Entered Apprentice sign: Draw the right hand rapidly across the neck as represented and drop the arm to the side. This action shows the penalty of having the throat cut and the tongue ripped out.​

The Grip of the Entered Apprentice is made by pressing the thumb against the top of the first knuckle-joint of the fellow Mason, the fellow Mason also presses his thumb against the first Mason's knuckle.

The name of this grip is "Boaz". When a candidate is imparted with this grip and its usage it is done in this manner."

First the Worshipful Master says to the candidate: "I now present my right hand in token of friendship and brotherly love, and will invest you with the grip and word. As you are uninstructed, he who has hitherto answered for you, will do so at this time."
The Worshipful Master of the lodge then has this exchange with the Senior Deacon, who is standing next to the candidate, who is still kneeling at the altar, after have assumed the obligation of this degree:

The Mason firmly grasps the right hand of a fellow Mason. The thumbs of both hands are interlaced. The first Mason presses the tops of his fingers against the wrist of the fellow Mason where it unites with the hand. The fellow Mason at the same time presses his fingers against the corresponding part of the the first Mason's hand and the fingers of each are somewhat apart. This grip is also called the Strong Grip of the Master Mason or the Lion's Paw. Instruction for this grip is given at the "graveside", after the candidate has been "raised".

What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is one of the world's oldest secular fraternal societies. The explanation may correct some misconceptions. Freemasonry is a society of men concerned with moral and spiritual values. Its members are taught its precepts by a series of ritual dramas, which follow ancient forms and use stonemasons' customs and tools as allegorical guides.
The Essential Qualification for Membership:

The essential qualification for admission into and continuing membership is a belief in a Supreme Being. Membership is open to men of any race or religion who can fulfill this essential qualification and are of good repute.
Freemasonry and Religion:

Freemasonry is not a religion, nor is it a substitute for religion. Its essential qualification opens it to men of many religions and it expects them to continue to follow their own faith. It does not allow religion to be discussed at its meetings.
The Three Great Principles:

For many years Freemasons have followed three great principles:

Brotherly Love

Every true Freemason will show tolerance and respect for the opinions of others and behave with kindness and understanding to his fellow creatures. ​

Relief

Freemasons are taught to practice charity, and to care, not only for their own, but also for the community as a whole, both by charitable giving, and by voluntary efforts and works as individuals. ​

Truth

Freemasons strive for truth, requiring high moral standards and aiming to achieve them in their own lives. ​

Freemasons believe that these principles represent a way of achieving higher standards in life.
Charity:

From its earliest days, Freemasonry has been concerned with the care of orphans, the sick and the aged. This work continues today. In addition, large sums are given to national and local charities.
Freemasonry and Society:

Freemasonry demands from its members a respect for the law of the country in which a man works and lives. Its principles do not in any way conflict with its members' duties as citizens, but should strengthen them in fulfilling their private and public responsibilities. The use by a Freemason of their membership to promote his own or anyone else's business, professional or personal interests is condemned, and is contrary to the conditions on which he sought admission to Freemasonry. His duty as a citizen must always prevail over any obligation to other Freemasons, and any attempt to shield a Freemason who has acted dishonorably or unlawfully is contrary to this prime duty.
Secrecy:

The secrets of Freemasonry are concerned with its traditional modes of recognition. It is not a secret society, since all members are free to acknowledge their membership and will do so in response to inquiries for respectable reasons. Its constitutions and rules are available to the public. There is no secret about any of its aims and principles. Like many other societies, it regards some of its internal affairs as private matters for its members.
Freemasonry and Politics:

Freemasonry is non-political, and the discussion of politics at Masonic meetings is forbidden. ​

Conclusions:

A Freemason is encouraged to do his duty first to God through his faith and religious practice; and then, without detriment to his family and those dependent on him, to his neighbor through charity and service. None of these ideas is exclusively Masonic, but all should be universally acceptable. Freemasons are expected to follow them.

We are dedicated to making good men better and to developing our knowledge of ourselves as individuals and the world around us through education, discussion and social exchange.


We aim to make proper use of our time, dividing it between worship, work, leisure and service, thus making the best use of our mental and physical abilities.


We aim to use our talents for the benefit of ourselves, our families, our neighbors and our communities throughout our private, public, business and professional life.


We declare our membership whenever any possible conflict of interest may arise or be perceived to arise.


We promise not to use our membership to promote our own or anyone else's private, public, business or professional interests.​

How can I become a Mason?

To become a Freemason you must: (edited)...........

• Subject to you being considered eligible and properly motivated you will be asked to complete an application for membership and return it to your local Lodge Secretary

Your application will be presented to a Lodge Meeting and a secret ballot conducted in which Members vote on your suitability. You will be notified of the result and invited to attend a Lodge Meeting for your initiation into Membership.

About Freemasonry​

Freemasonry teaches lessons in morality and self-knowledge through participation in a progression of allegorical two-part plays, which are learned by heart and performed by members within each Lodge. Freemasonry offers, and encourages in its members, an approach to life, which seeks to reinforce thoughtfulness for others, kindness in the community, honesty in business, courtesy in society and fairness in all things. Members are urged to regard the interests of the family as paramount but importantly Freemasonry also teaches and practices concern for people, care for the less fortunate and help for those in need.

12- Help the stranger and be hospitable with him.
13- If God gave you a son, thanks him and make of your child a good man for humanity.
14- Let him fear you till the age of 10, love you till his 20'S and respect you till your death. So be his teacher till his 10, a father till his 20'S and a friend till your death.
15- Don't be shame of your situation or you're a showoff.
16- A post doesn't give the person honor or shame but intentions in works.
17- Read and learn, look and act, think and do.
18- Let your actions be useful for others as much for you.
19- Don't underestimate other's work.
20- Accept concession without complaining.
21- Don't you give compliments to other or decrease him, because God the creative of the great universe knows better.
22- Respect your country's president, respect his government and legislations, and don't you interfere to help any conspiracy against your country but instead help your country with all your efforts.
23- Avoid arguments and don't you criticizes other's religions and politics to be popular.
24- Help your brother, that's if he is a good person.
25- Be curator towards your friend's children.
26- Keep your brother's secret as if it's yours.
27- Be a good person to be an example for others.
28- Seek for happiness in God's satisfaction.
29- Do your duties and don't waste your time and others' time.
30- Work for your life as if you're living forever and work for your eternity as if you're dying tomorrow.
31- He doesn't deserve to be born the one who lives for him self only.
32- As much as you need the worlds, the world needs you also.

The failure of the masonic institution to make known to the public, that is to non-Masons, its principles and its purpose has, in the past, resulted in both suspicion and antagonism toward Masonary. People are naturally inclined to be suspicious or fearful of those things which they are ignorant.​

There are some Masons who, having taken an obligation to keep certain matters confidential, decide that the best course of action when questioned about freemasonry is to maintain a dignified silence. Others may adopt the same attitude because they feel that they do not have a sufficiently detailed knowledge of freemasonry and are wary of 'saying the wrong thing.' What ever the reason, the person seeking information will be left with quite the wrong impression and perhaps a prospective candidate is turned away.​

What is Freemasonry​

Freemasonry is the oldest and most widely known of the world's important fraternal organisations. Freemasons share a concern for human values, moral standards, respect for the laws of society and the rights of individuals. It provides a code of living in today's society based on spiritual, ethical and moral standards.​

Freemasonry is not a secret society. Its members meet in Lodge Rooms for all to see these buildings, particularly the Sydney Masonic Centre, are open for public inspection. There is no secrecy regarding the aims and principles of freemasonry. The fact of the matter is that the philosophy of freemasonry is freely discussed in thousands of printed volumes available to masons and non-masons alike.

What are Freemasonry aims?​

Freemasonry is a society to join together in happy unity, men of high ideals, regardless of colour, creed or worldly status. It sets high standards of behaviour to be practised in daily life and so provides an example in the community. It is a non-profit organisation which offers companionship and aid both to members and the general community who may be in need.
The object of freemasonry in New South Wales is to provide a community service and practice this translated into a variety of charitable works, ranging from building homes for the aged to post-secondary and post-graduate education scholarships, a benevolent fund to help Masons and non-Masons, as well as awards and equipment to assist the handicapped.
The doors of freemasonry are open to all men who seek harmony with their fellow creatures, who feel the need for self improvement, and wish to participate in the adventure of making the world a more congenial place in which to live. The conditions are few. A man can become a freemason only by personal desire. Of his own free will he must make his desire to become a Mason known to a member who will arrange a sponsor and see that a petition is provided from the lodge where he is known.
However, the prospective candidate should be aware that as with many other such organistaions, there is a joining fee and a monthly subscription. In addition, Masons are encouraged to contribute to charities both Masonic and non-masonic as much as they can afford without personal or family detriment.
Freemasonry is not, however, a benefit society. Freemasonry is quietly proud of its charitable work in the community. Large amounts are devoted to the care of those in need regardless of colour, race or creed.

A Helping Hand for
Two Hundred & Fifty Years​

Men of every walk of life belong to Masonic Lodges. They are men who are good citizens and of good reputation who are concerned with building character and self-improvement. Among the ranks of Freemasons there have been many prominent people; there have been Kings, Presidents and Prime Ministers mixing freely in the company of tradesmen and professionals.
Because of the size of the masonic fraternity occasionally there is an individual who does not practise the precepts of Freemasonry. Such individuals seldom retain their membership.
Freemasons are taught to make charity and benevolence a distinguishing characteristic of their Masonic lives.
