SUMMARY

Some authorities project Kenya’s maximum power demand to grow 72 per cent to 2,259 megawatts by 2020 from the current 1,620 megawatts, to which demand the Standard Gauge Railway will contribute greatly. On the other hand, the Government sees the demand as jumping up threefold to 4,755 megawatts in the three years.

NAIROBI, KENYA: Kenya is planning to upgrade its diesel-powered Standard Gauge Railway service (SGR) to electric in the next three to four years, Cabinet Secretary James Macharia told reporters on Wednesday.

The CS said the new project will cost about Sh65 billion and explained that the government opted to start with diesel powered train due uncertainty in electrical power supply.

“We were not sure of electric power supply, that is why we started with diesel but provided a provision to upgrade it later to electric by 2021,” he said during the launch of inter-county train services between Mombasa and Nairobi.

Kenya Railways on Wednesday introduced a second trip on the Madaraka Express Passenger Service that departed Mombasa Termini at 3.30 pm.

CS Macharia said that the new service is part of measures to increase access and lower the cost of transport across the country.

“Since its launch five months ago, the Madaraka Express has endeavored to lower the cost of transport and make it more affordable for Kenyans to travel for both business and leisure. So far, the service has moved over 337,000 passengers between the port city of Mombasa and Nairobi, with the number growing daily,’’ he said.

On the other hand, the Government sees the demand tripling to 4,755 megawatts in the three years.

kenya is the only country in east africa with a functioning sgr ,electric tutafika tukipata maarifa
electric railway becomes fancy words when you do not have the technical capacity to run it.
hadi kwa sasa ethiopia sgr haijaanza kufanya kazi ,

Kenya diesel about 350 000 passengers transported since June 2017
Ethiopia electric barely 10 000 passengers since October 2016

whose smarter now???

jengeni yenyu electric kwanza ndo mje muongee mbaya

Bado vumbi la kuibiwa na mchina akishirikiana na viongozi wenu corrupt halijafutika machoni mwako, bado hujaamini kwamba viongozi wenu wanawaibia unaendelea kuwatetea?, kama hadi sasa bila kujumlisha gharama ya kuweka umeme gharama yake ni mara mbili zaidi ya inayojengwa Tanzania, je wakiongeza 20% kwa ajili ya electrification plus amount of money for electrical locomotives, it will go up to three times as much as, is it wise to continue pumping in money?

hata ningemshauri macharia pamoja na serikali wawachane na hiyo mambo ya electrification...lets just continue with diesel hadi tulipe deni..mambo ya kuongeza deni juu ya deni na ilhali SGR hii hii ya diesel inafanya kazi nzuri so far...its doing a fantastic job...no need of wasting more resources kisa tu stima...wakitamani stima sana basi wajaribu kwa SGR phase 2 ama Nairobi light rail...

To serve Nairobi tu ama? It won't make a sense having nusu mkeka shipping cargo to Nairobi then using trucks to Kampala! Who pays the cost of unloading n loading at Mombasa n Nairobi?

it will be half cheaper.from 500,000 KSH to 250,000 KSH..plus a Ugandan trader wont have to go to Mombasa to take his goods with a truck...he will just come to Nairobi...there is an Inland Container Depot (ICD) at Nairobi....large enough to handle millions of cargo per annum...

How about storage charges at inland container depot?

kwani they dont pay those storage charges at Mombasa??? my friend, Ugandan traders still pay storage charges at the Mombasa port....but after the launch of the cargo trains, they wont have to pay it in Mombasa since goods will be taken to Nairobi immediately they are offloaded from the ship....in fact this will make it easier for them since they will come from UG to find the goods have already arrived at Nairobi...

But paying twice will be a long call! BTW wagon ferries Mv Umoja and Mv Clarence on Lake Victoria are ready to link Port Bell n Mwanza n our narrow gauge to Dar n give ur SGR (where cargo trains can move at a speed of only 80km/h), the run for her money!

they wont pay twice...they will only pay for offloading/on-loading, then transportation to Nairobi using cargo trains...then finally transportation to Uganda using trucks...it will only take 24-48 hours from the current 7 days...
