JKIA’s Terminal IA Arrivals Terminal to Commence Operations
JKIA’s Terminal IA Arrivals Terminal to Commence Operations
The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) is this week set to operationalize the new terminal 1A arrivals function at the Jomo Kenya International Airport (JKIA).
The state of the art arrivals terminal, that is exclusively for use by Kenya Airways and its partner airlines has a capacity to handle a one-way peak hour traffic of 1,125 arriving passengers; it is equipped with two passenger-boarding bridges and 3 arrival belts with ability to handle 1,920 bags per hour.

Ag. Managing Director at KAA, Mr. Yatich Kagungo said that the commissioning of the new facility is a key milestone in the authority’s efforts to expand and modernize JKIA with the goal of enhancing customer experience.

“Terminal 1A will further stamp the position of JKIA as the main hub in the region. It will massively improve the experience of customers at JKIA, besides guaranteeing operational efficiency, boosting security by separating departing and arriving passengers, and improved quality of service to airport users,” said Mr. Kagungo.

The new terminal has been designed to allow free flowing movement of passengers in a spacious environment; and a clear division between arriving, departing and transiting passengers with clear signage to ensure all passengers get to where they need to be with minimum delay.

Terminal 1A has a capacity to handle 2.5 million passengers annually.

remember T1A was built on part of a section of the original terminal and the rest built outwards including 5 contact aprons so if you were to exclude T1a, the origina terminal wasn't 2.5m anymore , but then T1E was also remodeled afresh, also on the same side, Turkish lounge was built returning the capacity to 2.5m if you add that to the T1a, the whole termial ! has a capacity of 5m...

Here is a visual aid from google satelite maps so you dont get confused

You can even see the upgraded terminals look new and bright. T1a is the one on the left (look for Masai coffee) you can see there are about 5 plane contact points added. On the upper side of that curvy terminal is part of the original terminal, its less bright, those are terminals 1C,1D.....Then at the end there is the new Turkish lounge + Terminal 1E. in short, Terminal 1C,1D, 1E combined have a capacity of 2.5m and the big terminal 1A also has capacity of 2.5m also...... That's 5m on termial 1.

Terminal 1A walk through

Terminal 2 not seen of the above screenshot is on the other side of the airport, it also has a capacity of 2.5m.... That brings the capacty to 7.5m.

After all those ugrades JKIA was awarded fr its effort

JKIA Wins Best Improved Airport Award in Africa
JKIA receives International recognition from Airport’s Council International
Airports Council International (ACI) – the voice of world airports; has today recognized Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for its excellence in customer service. JKIA has been named as the best-improved airport in Africa in the prestigious 2015 Airports Council International (ACI) Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards. This recognition is a testament to the airport’s on-going commitment to service excellence.

Jomo Kenyatta emerged winner in the Best Improved by Region-Africa Category in what is considered as the aviation industry’s most comprehensive passenger service-benchmarking program. The ACI Survey has captured passengers’ experience at all airport passenger contact points at more than 300 airports worldwide. ACI ASQ has industry recognition as a world-class benchmarking program that aims to allow airports plan improvements and benchmark their customer services against other airports.

ACI named JKIA as the 5th best airport in Africa, 2014 during the ASQ Awards held last year.

Kenya Airports Authority’s Acting Managing Director, Mr. Yatich Kagungo noted that the recognition was timely; coming at a time that JKIA is undergoing major upgrading and modernisation works set to stamp it’s position as a regional hub.

“The stature of JKIA has grown significantly in recent years with increased passengers and cargo traffic into and out of the facility. We expect even further growth going forward as more capacity is unlocked by on-going works, which will improve level of service, security and controlled access to meet international standards, thus taking advantage of its strategic location of JKIA to position it as the premier aviation hub of Africa.” Mr. Kagungo added.

On-going works at JKIA include the construction of arrivals Terminal 1A (T1A) and Terminal E (T1E); expected to be opened in the course of this month. The recognition comes after the official opening of the airport’s new Terminal 2, a prefab terminal with a capacity to handle 2.5 million passengers annually and which caters for both international and domestic departures and arrivals.

The additional capacity injected by the new terminal brings the capacity of JKIA to 7.5 million passengers annually. JKIA at the moment handles an estimated 6.5 million passengers annually.

We would never have won that award if passengers were still experiencing congestions and delays or overcrowding at the airport

Those are the facts, a wise man will swallow them and consider themselves schooled. Haya nisikie jimtu bado lina insist jkia capacity ni 5m, you can never argue with reality!!!

Cool down man, cool down my young brother, I have given you my figures, if you have different figures please let's us look at them. Yes BRT is suppose not to make profit, but it must be sustainable and not making loses too, by charging Tshs 650 which is about Ksh 30 is far cheap than many private own of such standard, but because it carries big number of people per day, it makes alot of money per day.
BTW I hear Magufuli is eyeing at least 50% share of Uganda's cargo! And believe me with that way low cost of construction he can get that 50% share of Uganda’s cargo very easy by just lowering the cost to transport cargo via Dar. It will be a disaster on Kenya's side as their loans came with high interests rates to be paid back.

He! Kujifanya kujua kwingi wakati you don't know what you are talking about ndo shida inayokusumbua..

Greenfield project was a project well thout out long time ago during Raila/Kibaki regime, the initial meeting, design and price tag was done then, back in 2010-2011.

Problems started when tendering kept on changing as you can see below this is a 2011 news article , where Raila was telling arliament to keep off the project.

View attachment 627225

The problem continued until it reached a point the tendering process was cancelled and a new tender issued, by then Uhuru was in power 2013, at the time the airport was ver congested. In the same 2013, part of the airport caught fire fording jkia to build a temporary prefabricated terminal then renovate the burnt terminal to what is now known as terminal 1A these temporary measures significantly increased the capacity of jkia so the govt realised that the $600m greenfield wasn't that much of a priority, at he time there were other things that were more important to the jubilee govt lle.g the sgr,msa port, roads,...etc also some people believe some power rokers within the jubelee govt are the nes who cancelled the project because they didn't benefit anything during tendering... Those are some of he events that happened b4 final cancellation. But there are those like me o believe the project shouldn't have been cancelled, if we want to cement our position as an aviation hub then we need an airport that makes statement to the world, an airport that withing its compound will have a 7star hotel, level 5 hospital among other amenities, the greenfield project was all of that and we wasted it.
Is tendering not supposed to be part of planning? Kupanga ni kuchagua aisee...[emoji23] [emoji115]

SUMMARY

Some authorities project Kenya’s maximum power demand to grow 72 per cent to 2,259 megawatts by 2020 from the current 1,620 megawatts, to which demand the Standard Gauge Railway will contribute greatly. On the other hand, the Government sees the demand as jumping up threefold to 4,755 megawatts in the three years.

NAIROBI, KENYA: Kenya is planning to upgrade its diesel-powered Standard Gauge Railway service (SGR) to electric in the next three to four years, Cabinet Secretary James Macharia told reporters on Wednesday.

The CS said the new project will cost about Sh65 billion and explained that the government opted to start with diesel powered train due uncertainty in electrical power supply.

“We were not sure of electric power supply, that is why we started with diesel but provided a provision to upgrade it later to electric by 2021,” he said during the launch of inter-county train services between Mombasa and Nairobi.

Kenya Railways on Wednesday introduced a second trip on the Madaraka Express Passenger Service that departed Mombasa Termini at 3.30 pm.

CS Macharia said that the new service is part of measures to increase access and lower the cost of transport across the country.

“Since its launch five months ago, the Madaraka Express has endeavored to lower the cost of transport and make it more affordable for Kenyans to travel for both business and leisure. So far, the service has moved over 337,000 passengers between the port city of Mombasa and Nairobi, with the number growing daily,’’ he said.

MY TAKE
That's about $1.2 bln for electrification [emoji115] [emoji23]
Alafu mnamcheka JPM...... mtaiga tu kwake ingawaje auyupa duniani..

How is this?

KRR ina zalisha pesa mingi kwa mwaka kuliko Taifa lolote EA

Na sasa SGR kenya inatoa profit na record cargo and passenger numbers in just 4 months

Toa proof usiseme ni juu mliundiwa TAZARA

KRR has been doing better than TAZARA .....my parents used KRR tu travel in their time on a weekly basis from Kisii-kisumu to Nairobi then coast and its still operational....
Utawala wa TAZARA upo nchini Zambia. Ndiyo sababu Marehemu JPM alimuomba Mh Rungu Tanzania waweze kuongoza TAZARA. Hili kuepuka uzembe na fisadi.
