What exactly entails a modern design? Is it the body or the functionality.

How comes the Ethiopian one is ELECTRIFIED ALREADY for less $$$?..... even Ghana's is electrified.
Not only did these ugly fucks cost more but also,they are DIESEL....HAHAHAHA!

In an era of bullet trains, they could have given the Chinese BODY FABRICATION DESIGN DRAWINGS?..TO BE CUSTOM MADE FOR KENYA ONLY.........we would at least even lied they are next gen even though the chasis were old gen.and nobody would've known.
Or they should've fabricated the head body in Kenya.
Congrats but wasn't what I wished, that money they paid was soo much we would've had something stylish like our MATATU...hahhahahha!

There are three major factors that differentiates the Kenyan SGR and the Ethiopian one.

1. The kenyan sgr is a class one type. This means a lower gradient and a larger turning radius. What this means is that the trach can accomodate even the fastest locomotives there is in the market.
On the other hand, despite the electrification of the Ethiopian track, it is a class two. It has a smaller turn radius and a higher gradient, making it very limited in terms of the speed.

Its noteworthy also that the kenyan sgr can handle considerably more tonnes per acxle than the Ethiopian.

2. The design works.
The kenyan sgr entails a total of about 36 stations between Nairobi and Mombasa, while the Ethiopian has only about 5!!

The issue of environment and wildlife conservation has also forces the Kenyan track to be elevated almost 90+% of the way, which includes numerous bridges, earthworks and girders. I dont have to explain how expensive bridges are.

3. land acquisition
You see in Ethiopia, the government is a do-all kind. If it likes your land, it moves you and uses the land. No questions.

In Kenya however, if for some reason the govt needs to use you land, it buys it from you. A good amount of the billions used went into land acquisition.

Ethiopia's govt spent almost nothing for the land used.
