'Golden Mouth' John is notable for his extensive commentaries on the Bible which emphasized a literal understanding of the stories; the style popular at Alexandria until then was to acknowledge an allegorical meaning of the text.


Thus eminent ‘believers’ added falsehood to the beliefs of later generations. ‘For the best of reasons’ they ‘clarified’ obscure points, conjured up characters to speak dialogue that could have been said, invented scenarios that could have happened, borrowed extensively from a wider culture. And this all before they became the custodians of power and had real reasons for lies, inventions and counterfeits. As we shall see, god’s immutable laws became as flexible as putty.


The 5th and 6th centuries was the 'golden age' of Christian forgery. In a moment of shocking candour, the Manichean bishop (and opponent of Augustine) Faustus said:

Siyo tu kwamba Yesu ni njia na kweli ya kutufikisha kwa Baba, bali hapa anatamka kwamba Yeye ndiye uzima kwa vile ndiye Muumbaji! (Mwanzo 2:7).

Isingeleta mantiki yoyote hata kidogo kudai hivyo kwamba Yeye ni njia, kweli na uzima iwapo angekuwa Mtume tu wa Mungu!

Akaongeza: ^Kama mngalinijua Mimi, mngalimjua na Baba; tangu sasa mnamjua, tena mmemwona.^
“Filipo akamwambia, Bwana, tuonyeshe Baba, nasi yatutosha. Baba; nawe wasemaje basi, Utuonyeshe Baba?

Yohana 14:8-9
Pamoja na maneno hayo ya Kristu, yasiyokuwa na chembe ya mashaka yoyote kwamba Yeye ni nani, bado Filipo akarudia swali la msisitizo:

^Bwana, utuoneshe Baba, yatutosha!^

Ni kama vile alikuwa akimwambia Yesu:

^Bwana, iwapo unazungumzia kumjua au kumwona Mungu kupitia matendo Yako, hilo mbona tunalifahamu vizuri sana. Tunachotaka sisi ni kumwona Mungu kabisa jinsi alivyo, yukoje, Yeye ni nani!^

Hii ni kweli, hasa ikizingatiwa kwamba wanafunzi hao walikuwa pamoja na Kristu muda wote, walijua historia Yake na kwamba watu wengine wote walimtambua kama nabii wa Mungu.

Maswali ya Tomaso na Filipo yasingeleta maana yoyote iwapo walikuwa tu wakiuliza kuhusu utendaji wa Mungu.

Kwamba walitaka kuoneshwa matendo ya Mungu kupitia Yesu, wakati walikuwa wameshuhudia muda wote huduma Zake mbalimbali za huruma na upendo pamoja na miujiza Yake?

Ukweli ni kwamba maswali haya ya Tomaso na Filipo ni sawa na lile la Musa alipomwomba Mungu akisema, ^Nakusihi unioneshe utukufu Wako^ (Kutoka 33:18), ambapo akajibiwa, ^Huwezi kuniona uso Wangu, maana mwanadamu hataniona akaishi.^

Ni wazi kwamba Musa alitaka kumwona Mungu katika uhalisia Wake, vivyo hivyo na Tomaso na Filipo. Musa alioneshwa wema wa Mungu, huku wale wanafunzi wakioneshwa Kristo Mwenyewe!

^Filipo akamwambia, Bwana, utuoneshe Baba, yatutosha. Yesu akamwambia, Mimi nimekuwapo pamoja nanyi siku hizi zote, wewe usinijue, Filipo? Aliyeniona Mimi amemwona Baba; basi wewe wasemaje, Utuoneshe Baba? Husadiki kwamba Mimi ni ndani ya Baba, na Baba yu ndani Yangu?^ (Yohana 14:8-10a).

Yesu alikuwa anatuambia tu kwamba matendo yake mwenyewe na miujiza inapaswa kuwa uthibitisho wa kutosha wa kuwepo kwa Mungu bila Mungu kushuka kimwili na kujiruhusu kuonekana kila wakati mtu ana shaka.
Majibu yaleyale ambayo Yesu aliwaambia wanafunzi katika Yohana 14, ndiyo aliwaambia Wayahudi waliotaka kujua Yeye ni nani hasa (Yohana 10:24-38):

^Hata lini utatuhangaisha nafsi zetu? Kama Wewe ndiye Kristo, utuambie waziwazi.^

Wayahudi walikuwa wakifahamu vyema unabii waliosoma katika Agano la Kale kumhusu Kristu. Mathalani:

Isaya 9:6 ^Maana kwa ajili yetu Mtoto amezaliwa, Tumepewa Mtoto mwanamume; Na uweza wa kifalme utakuwa begani Mwake; Naye ataitwa jina Lake Mshauri wa ajabu, Mungu mwenye nguvu, Baba wa milele, Mfalme wa amani.^

Isaya 7:14 ^Kwa hiyo Bwana Mwenyewe atawapa ishara. Tazama, bikira atachukua mimba, atazaa Mtoto mwanamume, Naye atamwita jina Lake Imanueli.^

Si ajabu Yesu alipowaambia Yeye ndiye alitabiriwa katika unabii kabla hajafanyika mwanadamu, wakaokota mawe ili kumpiga (kwa sababu Wayahudi wengi hawakuamini kwamba Yeye ndiye alikuwa Masihi!)

Zingatia baadhi ya maneno aliyotamka Kristu hapa, yanayoonesha Yeye ni zaidi ya mwanadamu na malaika:

^Nami nawapa uzima wa milele^ (aya ya 28). Ni Mungu pekee ndiye awezaye kutupatia uhai au kuuondoa.

^Mimi na Baba tu umoja^ (aya ya 30). Ndiyo maana Yesu anaitwa Mwana pekee (the only begotten Son). Maneno ya Kiyunani ni monogenes, yenye maana ya mwenye asili ileile sawa Naye!

Kama unadhani Wayahudi hawakuelewa kile ambacho Yesu Kristu alikuwa akiwaambia juu ya uhusiano Wake na Baba, hebu zingatia maneno yao:

^Kwa ajili ya kazi njema hatukupigi kwa mawe; bali kwa kukufuru, na kwa sababu Wewe uliye mwanadamu wajifanya Mwenyewe u Mungu.^ (aya ya 33).

Ni wazi hapa Yesu alikuwa akiwaambia kwamba Yeye ndiye Mungu hasa! Na wala siyo kwamba matendo Yake tu ndiyo yalikuwa sawa na yale ya Mungu!

Ujio wa Yesu duniani katika sura na umbile la mwanadamu ni sawa kabisa na vile ambavyo Mungu aliwatokea manabii, mitume na watu Wake zamani katika maumbile mbalimbali kama vile malaika, nk. (Waamuzi 13:20-22; 6:11-23).

Mungu anaweza kujivika sura ya nafsi yoyote au kitu chochote. Kule jangwani, Mungu alimtokea Musa katika kichaka kilichokuwa kinawaka moto bila kuteketea (Kutoka 3:1-6).

Yesu ni Mungu katika umbile la kibinadamu. Asili Yake ya uungu ilisitirika katika ubinadamu. Katika umbile hili ndipo wanafunzi Wake waliweza kumwona Mungu.

Hawakuishia kuona matendo tu ya Mungu, bali walimwona Mungu Mwenyewe hasa!

^Hapo mwanzo alikuwepo Neno, Naye Neno alikuwa kwa Mungu, Naye Neno alikuwa Mungu.

Huyo mwanzo alikuwepo kwa Mungu. Vyote vilifanyika kupitia Huyo; wala pasipo Yeye hakikufanyika chochote kilichofanyika.

Ndani Yake ndimo ulimokuwa uzima, nao ule uzima ulikuwa nuru ya watu.

Naye Neno akafanyika mwili, akakaa kwetu; nasi tukauona utukufu Wake, utukufu kama wa Mwana pekee atokaye kwa Baba; amejaa neema na kweli.^ (Yohana 1:1-4, 14).
