ISIS claims responsibility for attack in busy Moscow-area concert venue that left at least 40 dead​

ISIS has claimed responsibility for an attack at a popular concert venue complex near Moscow Friday that left at least 40 dead and more than 100 wounded after assailants stormed the venue with guns and incendiary devices.

The terror group took responsibility for the attack in a short statement published by ISIS-affiliated news agency Amaq on Telegram on Friday. The group did not provide evidence to support the claim.

Video footage from the site of the attack, the Crocus City Hall concert venue, shows the vast complex, which is home to both the music hall and a shopping center, on fire with smoke billowing into the air. State-run RIA Novosti reported the armed individuals “opened fire with automatic weapons” and “threw a grenade or an incendiary bomb, which started a fire.” They then “allegedly fled in a white Renault car,” the news agency said.



State media Russia 24 reported the roof on the venue has partially collapsed.

The attack unfolded before the music group Picnic was set to perform, according to Russia 24. The band’s manager told state media that the performers were unharmed.

The Russia Prosecutor General’s Office said: “Unidentified people in camouflage broke into Crocus City Hall and started shooting before the start of the concert,” according to TASS.

Detained Terrorists Had Contacts on Ukrainian Side – FSB​

Russian FSB (Federal Security Service) published a statement on the Moscow concert hall terror attack investigation.
Eleven people, including four direct perpetrators of Crocus concert hall terror attack were detained as a result of work of special services and law enforcers. Further work to identify the complicity base is underway.
Investigators work on gathering all possible information on terror attack. It is already established that the terror attack was planned meticulously and that firearms used by terrorists were stored in a cache ahead of attack.
After terror attack, the criminals attempted to get away, moving by car towards Russian-Ukrainian border. As a result of joint actions of special services and law enforcing agencies, all four terrorists were detained in several hours in Bryansk region, Russia. After terror attack the criminals planned to cross Russian-Ukrainian border and had necessary contacts on Ukrainian side.
Currently they are transferred to Moscow. The investigation of terror attack in underway.

Indeed, the terrorist attack was well planned and competent actions of the attackers allowed them to execute the massacre and flee the scene (but not to hide in Ukraine); but the attack is not similar to the terror methods used by ISIS militants. Often, such mass terrorist attacks are carried out, in “one way”, no escape is planned in advance. Such terrorist attacks are usually accompanied by hostage-taking and political demands, gaining the maximum attention to the situation. But in the Crocus City Hall, the terrorists quickly executed as many people as possible, set the building on fire for the sake of distraction and hastily departed by car in the only possible direction for salvation – to Ukraine. Surrender alive is also unusual for ordinary terrorists.
