ENGLISH football made a mockery of the credit crunch with the most remarkable 24 hours in transfer history yesterday.


As the clock ticked towards the midnight deadline, deals and drama unfolded with every passing second.


And at the centre of it all was the city of Manchester, which emerged as English football's big spender.


Two of the world's most sought-after and expensive strikers - Dimitar Berbatov and Robinho - ensured the north-south divide in football is as big as ever.


And it is London's big-time charlies - Tottenham and Chelsea - who were the losers. City started the day with a Cinderella-like takeover by the billionaire Royal family of Abu Dhabi.


Within minutes, the new owners were declaring war on neighbours Manchester United by plotting an audacious £34million bid for Berbatov.


But while City fans began to gather at Eastlands, asking each other if it could be really happening, Berba was busy with other plans.
Just after 11am he arrived by plane in Manchester, where Alex Ferguson took a huge risk by personally picking up the Bulgaria striker in his Bentley and driving him to United's Carrington training HQ.
Fergie did not need to make such a public show of his target but it was all part of his masterplan.


The Red Devils boss was determined to put down a marker on Spurs, who have refused to agree a fee for the player all summer.


Berbatov was whisked off from Manchester Airport and spent the next five hours going through rigorous medical examinations and fitness tests.
But as he was huffing and puffing, Spurs accepted City's bid and gave the Sky Blues permission to speak to the player and negotiate personal terms.


Just a few hundred metres from where Berbatov was running in the United gym, City boss Mark Hughes was feeling the real power of the club's new owners.


But attempts to contact Berba's agent Emil Dantchev were fruitless and City instructed bids to be made elsewhere.


Valencia received a £30m offer for striker David Villa but City's representative was told ‘no.'


Meanwhile, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy began to hear that Berbatov was in Manchester - and talking to United - WITHOUT his permission.


By 8pm Levy had pulled the plug on a deal - furious at United's audacity but also thwarted by the fact that one of the players Spurs hoped would replace Berbatov - Espanyol's Sergio Garcia - was joining Real Betis instead.
United, however, still ferried 27-year-old Berba to Old Trafford, where his agent had already agreed the terms of a £100,000-per-week contract.


Meanwhile, across town, City were encouraged by news of a deal that they never dreamed would be possible.


A couple of hours earlier they had contacted Real Madrid and asked if Robinho was for sale.


Real Sporting Director Predrag Mijatovic told them that their asking price had always been the same - £33m.


He was shocked when the voice on the other end of the phone simply said: ‘OK, we'll send a fax.'


And in the blink of an eye, City's new owners staked their claim as the new rich kid on the Premier League block. Respected radio station Cadena Ser then reported that Real had agreed the transfer of Robinho to Manchester - City.


While half the city went wild with expectation United officials closed ranks. An improved offer of £31m had been agreed with Spurs.


As part of the agreement, United forward Fraizer Campbell - who thought he was heading to Wigan on loan - was told he would be loaned to Tottenham instead for a year with an option to buy.


But as Fergie sipped a celebratory glass of wine in his office, alarm bells rang at Chelsea - who had to decide whether or not to up their bid for Robinho. Calls between chief executive Peter Kenyon and owner Roman Abramovich took place.


In Madrid, Robinho agreed that his agent Wagner Ribeiro should speak with City officials about his personal terms.


Any deal had to be agreed subject to a medical and the contract being agreed. However, Ramon Calderon confirmed the news on Spanish television.


He said: "We have agreed to sell Robinho for human and footballing reasons and for a substantial amount of money.


"This was the best deal for the club and for the player."


Maybe so, though there is certainly one man who would disagree - Luiz Felipe Scolari.


Having chased the Brazil striker all summer, Big Phil probably can't believe he's now second to Man City.

THIS is the £500million Dream Team set to make the knees of Manchester City's opponents tremble with fear.
They are six of the best football players in the world - and are ALL targets of the multi-billionaire Arab sheikhs who have bought Manchester's "second" club.



Golden goal ... Dr Al Fahim

The Blues have already captured Real Madrid's Brazilian superstar Robinho for £32.5million.

Now consortium frontman Dr Sulaiman Al Fahim says he is willing to pay £134million to wrest Cristiano Ronaldo away from arch-rivals Man United.

City's manager Mark Hughes has also been told he can bid £80million each for AC Milan's Brazilian hitman Kaka and Barcelona's attacking midfielder Lionel Messi.

Liverpool's Spanish goal machine Fernando Torres and Arsenal playmaker Cesc Fabregas will be chased as soon as soccer's next transfer window opens in January, with price tags of £70million and £60million respectively.

And there will be a renewed bid of £60million for striker Dimitar Berbatov - who only signed for Man United on Monday night.

Berbatov - in Sofia yesterday to prepare for Bulgaria's World Cup qualifier against Montenegro - told a news conference joining United was "a dream come true".



Approval ... fans on cloud nine

But he could soon be hopping into a limo for a quick trip across town.

Dr Al Fahim told The Sun: "We were disappointed not to get Berbatov - we tried very hard.

"But that does not mean we have given up. We have big plans for this football club and we'll be back to try to get him again next year."

And he vowed to bring in at least EIGHTEEN new players.

Dr Al Fahim said: "If we can get the biggest players in the world, then we will get them.

"Ronaldo has said he wants to play for the biggest club in the world. So we will see in January if he is serious. Real Madrid were estimating his value at £90million. But for a player like that, to actually get him, will cost a lot more. I would think £134million.

"But why not? We are going to be the biggest club in the world, bigger than both Real Madrid and Manchester United.



Ambition ... Crown Prince

"There are a lot of other rich clubs in the Premier League and I think an extra team like Manchester City to compete against Chelsea, Liverpool, Man United, will add value to the tournament.

"I am a fan of the Premier League itself and from today I will be a fan of Man City. It is very special club to the fans.

"They would like to see Manchester City go back to the old days when they got trophies and victories."

Dr Al Fahim expects City to finish in the top four of the Premiership this season, take the title in 2009-10 and be Champions League winners within three years.

The oil-rich owners will lure the players with wage offers of up to £200,000 a week.

And fans of every other Premier League team were last night checking their fixture list to see if they play City before January.

The astonishing money-no-object approach could turn English soccer upside down as big clubs such as Arsenal and Liverpool lose their best players to City.

And the team's supporters - some of whom turned up at their Eastlands stadium wearing Arab head-dresses yesterday - can hardly believe what is happening.

The real Mr Moneybags behind the takeover is Sheikh Munsoor bin Zayed al Nahyan, who has a 90 per cent stake in the consortium.

The 38-year-old's boundless wealth makes Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich look like a kid with a piggy bank.

He is one of five brothers feted as the sovereign bosses of Abu Dhabi.

There are no official estimates of Sheikh Munsoor's wealth.

But he and his brothers control the Abu Dhabi Sovereign Wealth Fund - considered the biggest in the world and valued at £460BILLION.

Mr Abramovich is worth "only" £12billion.

One ex-pat living in Abu Dhabi said: "Munsoor and his brothers are not just revered around here, they are treated like Gods.

"To talk about them in anything other than glowing, almost fawning terms is tantamount to blasphemy. Virtually everything here is owned by the family - the media, real estate businesses and property empires."

Munsoor, university educated in America, is chairman of the UAE's Al Jazeera football club.

But even with his huge involvement in soccer, his MAIN passion is horse racing.

He is chairman of the Emirates Racing Authority and is rumoured to own 300 thoroughbreds.

Frontman Dr Al Fahim, a 31-year-old property developer, is not short of a penny or two, either.

Nicknamed The Doc, he is also a reality TV star with a catchphrase that will chill Mark Hughes: "Impress me!"

He uses it to strike fear into contestants before setting tasks on the Arab version of The Apprentice.

A crew member said: "Hughes will find out quickly you don't mess with The Doc. Once he has made up his mind about something, that's it. Hughes had better deliver."

SALES of Manchester City shirts trebled yesterday - with 95 per cent of fans snapping up copies of Brazilian striker Robinho's new number 10 jersey. One worker said: "We've never seen anything like this. Robinho shirts are flying off the shelves." Manchester United fans were also clamouring for new hero Dimitar Berbatov's number 9 jersey.



BLUE is certainly the colour for Manchester City's new owner. Dr Al Fahim is often seen wearing a royal blue Arab robe and wears a sky blue gem on his wedding ring finger. And despite his wealth, he is down-to-earth. A pal said: "He is very approachable, you could go and sit with him at breakfast and he'd be fine. He is not shy, but he is not an extrovert either."
