Today, when many nations are still faced with challenge to their civilization existence, it is important for future generations to know and accurate history.

Recurring problems in our world prompt us to seek documented sources of inspiration and courage; by closely examining the parents and grandparents commitment to freedom and dignity we also preserve our forebears' standards of morality and their universal human values.

Terrible stories abound of the treatment of slaves by Arabs. On board dhows (mitepe) from ports around the coast of Tanga region in particularly Pangani, Moa, Zingibari and Petukiza; and Mnyanjani, Kigombe or Chongoleani the slaves were packed so tightly into dhow decks that some would suffocate.

In those days transmission diseases like cholera were rampantly breaking out, the sick would be thrown overboard and many starved. Female captives were sexually abused on board; and once the sailing dhow pirated they were held as hostages and bargained for ransom. The most unlucky ended up stuck and decapitated.

It is noted that black men slaves were castrated and that inhuman exercise had been based on the assumption that the black male had ungovernable sexual appetite.
The descendants of slaves living along Mwarongo peninsula southeast of Tanga City reveal that the castration of black male slaves was commonplace. Salim Mwakomba of Ndumi also in Tanga City had 240 castrated black male slaves (eunuchs).

The castration exercise resulted to widespread of homosexuality as well. But the Arabs noted that black male slaves lack self-control and steadiness of mind and they are overcome by fickleness, foolishness and ignorance.

Watumwa wanaume wote waliopelekwa India na Arabuni, walihasiwa!. Watumwa wa kike, walitumiuka kama wajakazi na walibakwa!. Wakishika mimba, waliuliwa!. Baadhi ya wachache walitokea kupendwa kufuatia uwezo mkubwa wa "kukolea" kwa wanawake ngozi nyeusi kuliko wanawake wa Kiarabu!, na mpaka leo, na mpaka kesho, ukipima "mkolezo" wa ngozi nyeusi na ngozi nyeupe, utakubaliana na mimi kuwa hata watawala wa "lile" soko la "ile biashara" kule Zanzibar, imetawaliwa na ngozi nyeusi!. Soko la "ile biashara" Dubai, Doha, Muscut na Oman, limetawaliwa na ngozi nyeusi!, sasa nasikia hata soko la "ile biashara" China, limetawaliwa na ngozi nyeusi!, ndio maana kila kukicha dada zetu ni safari za huko, wakoindoka na japo nauli tuu!, na kurudi na bidhaa lukuki!.

Watumwa wakike "waliokolea" walifanywa hivi

Some women stolen from Africa were stolen to serve the infamous Arabian harems (exploited as sex-slaves); their children were born free to Arab fathers, and thus would have been heirs to wealth and status, fully and equally assimilated into the population (good for Arabia, bad for African identity). [5] Their mother's receives the title of "umm walad" (lit. mother of a child), which was an improvement in her status as she could no longer be sold. Among Sunnis, she is automatically freed upon her master's death, however for Shi'a, she is only freed if her child is still alive; her value is then deducted from this child's share of the inheritance.[1] These umm walad, attained "an intermediate position between slave and free" pending their freedom, although they would sometimes be nominally freed as soon as they gave birth.

These black African slaves in Arabia are subjected to mental and emotional torments that have always been concomitant with slavery. "Routine punishments for the slightest fault include beatings, denial of food and prolonged exposure to the sun, with hands and feet tied together. "Serious" infringement of the master's rule can mean prolonged tortures, documented in a report by Africa Watch. These include 1. The "camel treatment," where a human being is wrapped around the belly of a dehydrated camel and tied there. The camel is then given water and drinks until its belly expands enough to tear apart the slave. 2. The "insect treatment," where insects are put in his ears. The ears are waxed shut. The arms and legs are bound. The person goes insane from the bugs running around in his head. 3. The "burning coals" where the victim is seated flat, with his legs spread out. He is then buried in sand up to his waist, until he cannot move. Coals are placed between his legs and are burnt slowly. After a while, the legs, thighs and sex of the victim are burnt. There are other gruesome tortures--none of which is fit to describe in a family newspaper" states Africa Watch. Another report states that some slaves caught fleeing are often castrated or branded like cattle.

Okello created a Revolutionary Council and named the leader of the Afro-Shirazi Party, Abeid Karume, as president and leader of the (Arabic) Umma-(Massa) Party, sheik Abdulrahman Muhammad Babu as prime minister (later: vice-president). Both Karume and Babu had not been informed of the coup. Both residing in Tanganyika, but returned to Zanzibar, where they were welcomed by Okello. However, neither Karume nor Babu wanted anything to do with him. Afterward, Okello appeared to be too unstable to play any role in government of the new country and was quietly sidelined from the political scene by Karume, who allowed him to retain his title of Field Marshal.[SUP][2][/SUP][SUP][3][/SUP]

By 3 February Zanzibar was finally returning to normality and Karume had been accepted, almost unquestionably, as its president.[SUP][4][/SUP] Okello formed a paramilitary unit, known as the Freedom Military Force (FMF), from his own supporters which is known to have patrolled the streets and become involved with looting.[SUP][5][/SUP][SUP][6][/SUP] In addition Okello's violent rhetoric, his thick and dialectic English pronunciations and Acholi tribal English accent- typical of Acholi from Northern Uganda, and his Christian beliefs alienated many in the largely moderate, Zanzibari and Muslim ASP.[SUP][7][/SUP] By March many of his FMF had been disarmed by Karume's supporters and an Umma Party militia.[SUP][6][/SUP][SUP][7][/SUP] Okello was denied access to the country when he tried to return from a trip to the mainland and deported to Tanganyika and then to Kenya before returning, destitute, to his native Uganda.[SUP][7][/SUP] He was officially removed from his post as Field Marshal on 11 March.[SUP][8][/SUP]

The People's Liberation Army (PLA) was formed by the government in April and completed the disarmament of Okello's remaining FMF troops.[SUP][7][/SUP] On 26 April Karume announced that he had negotiated to enter into a union with Tanganyika to form the new country of Tanzania.[SUP][9][/SUP] Karume's reason for doing so may have been to prevent the radicals in the Umma Party from taking over the country or to reduce the possibility of increasing communist influence in East Africa.[SUP][9][/SUP][SUP][10][/SUP] Despite this, many of the Umma Party's socialist policies on health, education and social welfare were adopted by the government.[SUP][11][/SUP]
