The rise and fall of Colonel Muamar Gadaffi

The rise and fall of Colonel Muamar Gadaffi

The United States may lose its chance to reshape the politics of the Middle East if budget pressures hobble U.S. support for democratic forces emerging in countries such as Egypt and Tunisia, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Tuesday.

"We have an opportunity right now in the Middle East and North Africa that Im not sure were going to be able to meet because we dont have the resources to invest," Clinton said

"Whether we will continue to be strong and be able to project American power is up for grabs, and were going to make the best case we can that American power is a power for the good...we hope that it will find a ready audience in the Congress as these negotiations resume."

Clinton said that despite the financial constraints, the United States remained the worlds leading power -- but was using that power, as in the case of the internationally-backed campaign against Libyas Muammar Gaddafi, to build alliances and share burdens with other countries.

Libya rebels fight for refineries; US sends drones

Rebels to the west and east of Libya's capital fought forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi for control of oil facilities vital to winning the six-month-old civil war.
The United States also deployed two more Predator drones for surveillance operations over Libya, a U.S. official told Reuters on Wednesday, as Gaddafi's forces faced unprecedented pressure.

The drones arrived earlier this week, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Rebels advance in their fight for Az Zawiyah

Fierce fighting between rebels and Muammar Gaddafi loyalists has broken out at Libya's only functioning oil refinery in the western city of Az Zawiyah.

The clashes on Wednesday are part of the rebels' push to cut fuel supplies to the regime's stronghold in Tripoli, the capital.
A rebel field commander in Az Zawiyah, Osama Arusi, said the fighting had shut down an oil pipeline to Tripoli and that rebels have surrounded the refinery.
"The pipeline from Az Zawiyah to Tripoli has been switched off," Arusi told the Associated Press news agency. "The man who is responsible for switching the pipeline off said it is not working."

Analysts said the capture of the 120,000-barrel-per-day refinery in Az Zawiyah would not have a major impact on Gaddafi's ability to secure fuel.

Lizzie Phelan has given a report that confirms an earlier report that was given by Mathaba Libya Coordinator and also a young member of the Libyan Army: Misrata has been liberated by loyalist volunteers of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi and the Libyan Defence Forces.

Ms. Phelan says, in her report, that this has been confirmed also by Dr. Moussa Ibrahim, the honest Jamahiriya media spokesperson.

Earlier reports had been circulated and reached pub.mathaba.net but not passed for publication as unverified claims that "hundreds" of U.S. soldiers had entered Misrata and were reports meant to create confusion.

Reports in NATO media outlets as always claiming that the tebels (terrorist rebels) are about to "liberate" Tripoli when they are in complete disarray, were also designed to create confusion however they have no effect on Libya but are aimed at the foreign supporters of the tebels.

Chinese media too has echoed these reports, we assume because the Chinese media often simply echoes western media in their reports without checking of facts. After China allowed the F-UK-USA alliance to enter African sovereign air space and massacre Libyans, almost 2 million Chinese have been affected adversely.

By Lizzie Phelan

While the journalists suffering from cabin fever in Tripoli's Rixos hotel, publish their dreams that imperialism's lackies (the rebels/rats "tebels") have taken Zawiya, Ghuriyan and Sorman, they are ignoring a decisive moment in the crisis.

That is the liberation of the hitherto rebel-held area of Misratah. Last night the Libyan army moved into the centre of the city and now the rebels are trapped between Misratah and Tawergha. 75 per cent of the city has been secured including the port, which was a lifeline for the rebels to receive shipments of arms and other supplies, as well as being a key transport route for them.

Leaders of Libyan tribes hold a press conference

This was confirmed today by government spokesman Dr Moussa Ibrahim and at a press conference by tribal leaders of up to 200 Libyan tribes. This includes the leaders of four of the largest Libyan tribes which make up half the Libyan population: Wafalla, Tarhouna, Zlitan, Washafana. They have all given the allegiance of their tribes to the leader Muammar Gaddafi.

The tribal leaders also confirmed that Zawiya, Ghuriyan and Sorman, are secure, in contrast to claims by foreign reporters in Tripoli and Djerba (Tunisia) that they have been taken by the rebels. There are pockets of rebels in these areas, but they are isolated and surrounded by the Libyan army and Libyan tribes. But of course, the claims of some mainstream journalists who have next to no knowledge of Libya will determine the orientalist public opinion of the west. These claims stand in stark contradiction to the reports of the Libyan tribes adhwho of course know their land with great intimacy.
It is clear that these claims were designed to try and boost the moral of the rebels which just goes from one disaster to another, and also to try and create panic amongst the Libyan population. Also, they have been desperately trying to secure some victory before August 17th (17 day of Ramadan), a very important date in the Islamic calendar. This was the date of Prophet Muhammad's victory in the Battle of Badr.
However, all the best efforts of the international press to create confusion and panic on the ground and Libya are always swiftly turned around by a speech by Leader Muammar Gaddafi. This was delivered last night by telephone to supporters that had flocked to Green Square. He reasserted his calls for the Libyan people to remain steadfast in defeating NATO's allies on the ground and NATO itself.
So the media war goes on. And in case anyone is still actually watching Al Jazeera, which has been at the centre of the conspiracy against Libya, here Press TV's Afshin Rattansi screens footage of an Al Jazeera editorial meeting with the Emir of Qatar and none other than Israel's Tzipi Livni.
From 9 mins and 11 secs:
Just to clear up some more crap coming out in the international press: The interior minister Nassr al-Mabrouk which the western press is claiming has "defected" is ***live*** right now (3.05 am Libyan Time) on Libya's most popular talk show saying he left because he had to go for an operation and he is still 100 per cent with Gaddafi.
Finally, we are still waiting for absolute confirmation of reports that rebel commander Khalifa Hefter has been captured by pro-Gaddafi forces. This would obviously plunge the rebels into further disarray following the assassination of other the former top rebel commander Abd al Fatah Younis by Al Qaeda (which runs throughout the rebel ranks). Hefter was living in Virginia for 20 years working as a CIA agent, right up until the crisis began when he swiftly returned to Libya to join the TNC.
Key leaders and supporters of the tebels have now conceded that NATO itself is going to lose this war. Read one such confirmation here.

Mathaba: Note to the gullible western tell-lie-vision watchers. What has been going on since March when NATO started to bomb Libya, is that tebels under massive air support of NATO which carries out massive bombings of towns in order to drive out the citizens and the Libyan defence forces, move in for a few hours along with western journalists and take some photo shots to show they have "liberated" that particular town. Those reports then make it to prime time tell-lie-vision news. But:
What the western "news" media editor's do not allow to be shown to you after that is the proofs that always just hours later, the tebels flee again as the Libyan defence forces and population move back in, their houses having been ransacked by the tebels. If you want to have an idea of the level of support for Qaddafi within Libya, but also to just get a clear picture of what is going on there, and to see what you are never shown on tell-lie-vision, just take a look at www.bit.ly/LibyaTruth

The reason NATO cannot win this war without dropping nukes on the entire population, is because it is the majority of the population that makes up the self-governing direct democracy "Jamahiriya" as well as the defence forces. A cursory look at Libyan history and unity against foreign invaders will show that NATO has no option but to withdraw, or continue massacres that are hour by hour increasing the level of support not only within Libya and Africa, but now worldwide, for the Libyan Jamahiriya and its direct participatory democracy.

Timothy Bancroft-Hinchey
Pravda.Ru
NATO's lies we have seen before. We saw them in Kosovo as they protected Albanian mafia terrorists and controlled the drug trade, we saw them in Iraq with Saddam's non-existent Weapons of Mass Destruction, we saw it again with the invention of a casus belli against Libya which does not exist. But where do the media come into this?
As a permanent member of staff of Pravda.Ru, writing for the English version, I usually cover several sections which need material, be these World Events, Economics, Cultural Events, Society or even Sport; as Director and Chief Editor of the Portuguese version, I receive materials from our hundred or so correspondents spread out over the eight Portuguese-speaking countries and place the material they send me, occasionally writing an Opinion/Editorial piece in both versions.
Due to the sheer injustice of NATO's Libya campaign, due to the barefaced lies upon which it is based, I feel obliged to write more of these Op-Ed pieces to counter the nonsense that NATO countries are spreading as a cover for their criminal acts of murder, attempted murder, wanton destruction of public and private property, occasioning criminal damage, strafing water supplies and electricity grids with military hardware. It doesn't get much more evil than the purposeful precision-bombing of a house where three babies were murdered by a NATO pilot because they thought Colonel Gaddafi was there. He was. He was outside feeding the animals.
However, I never expected to see myself forced to get back into front-line reporting, finding myself obliged to re-enter the realm of what I term hoof-on-the-street journalism, fact-finding missions as opposed to the comfort of op-ed pieces based upon 35 years of experience. Yet due to the total lies, and, I am sorry, bullshit, in the western media, I find myself obliged to tell the truth, first because as a journalist that is supposed to be what we do; secondly because the name of the newspaper I write for, PRAVDA.Ru, means "truth" in Russian and thirdly, because not to do so is an insult to the brave young women and men, independent journalists, who are out there risking their lives getting us information. And what does the western "bought" media do? It twists the stories until they are unrecognisable and blows a raspberry in their faces.
I have written many lines about this war and by now everyone reading this column is aware that Colonel Gaddafi was to receive a humanitarian award from the UNO for his excellent humanitarian record in March 2011, that this "rebellion" was fuelled from outside (it started on the frontiers), that this "rebellion" is mainly fuelled by Islamist fanatics inside Libya or foreign terrorists, that many of those fighting the Libyan Armed Forces fought for Al-Qaeda, that Al-Qaeda runs through the ranks of the "rebels", that NATO has committed countless war crimes, and that NATO is illegally and openly interfering in an internal conflict aiding the terrorists and bombing the Libyan Armed Forces.
The military situation
So now, due to the lies spread across the western media, I felt obliged to do the work of thousands of "bought" media outlets and sift daily through battle reports from my contacts on the ground. Some of these are the independent journalists I mentioned, others are reliable sources inside Libya, and present the real picture.
What the western media outlets collectively presented throughout this last weekend (August 14 to 15) was pure nonsense, unadulterated drivel and what must have been a collective orgy of NATO and their terrorist friends' fantasies. We were presented with a scenario in which "Gaddafi is surrounded", as from one day to the next, the Libyan Armed Forces lost territory it had been managing to control for six months. When we get down to facts we see that these western sources can never, ever be trusted again.
Let us start in the East. Al-Brega has not fallen at all. It is totally under the control of the Libyan Armed Forces (LAF). In fact, the LAF are currently conducting operations inside Benghazi itself, where the terrorist elements are in total disarray after fighting amongst themselves, stealing the money NATO has been giving them (what was that Mr. Cameron said about public spending cuts? He is spending tens of millions a week strafing kids in Libya and donating money to Al-Qaeda terrorists. For those who do not believe me, Google up one of their chiefs, Al-Hasidi). On Sunday another NATO helicopter was shot down.
In the centre, the city of Misuratah is around 95% under the control of the LAF, the terrorist forces there are surrounded and the port is under Libyan Government control. Any NATO vessel entering it will enter under the consent of the Libyan Government or else will be blasted into the water and we will see whether the Mediterranean fish really do like frogs or their Anglo-Saxon masters who say horrible things about them behind their backs. It is said that the CIA agent Khalifa Haftar has been captured in this operation. What was he doing there? Other rebels are trapped in Tawergha.
In the West, here NATO and its puppet press really had a heyday yesterday. The fact of the matter, after close consultation with sources on the ground, is that Al-Zawiyah, Gharian and Surman are firmly under the control of the Libyan authorities. This has been confirmed by independent journalists in the area, has been reconfirmed by sources in the Libyan authorities and has been reconfirmed by reports from tribal leaders in the area. The largest tribes, the Warfa'llah, Tarhouna, Zlitan and Washafana, are all firmly behind Colonel Gaddafi. Terrorist activity in the area is restricted to pockets of elements which are being liquidated as the areas they infest are sterlised.
The town of Sibrat, full of priceless Roman antiquities, was bombed by NATO. This is a crime against Humanity.
Further news
The terrorists have made a list of store owners, shops which sell beauty products for women, in Benghazi who they wish to decapitate. These are the pigs who NATO is protecting.
Qatar has been supplying the terrorists with weaponry; the French have boots on the ground, outside the auspices of UNSC Resolutions 1970 and 1973 (2011).
Why this campaign?
Because August 17 is the seventeenth day of Ramadan, the date of the Battle of Badr, in which the prophet Mohammed secured victory. One can understand the terrorists wishing to shape public opinion in their favour because they are increasingly desperate and impotent. But western news outlets doing their dirty work for them and lying to protect NATO's war crimes?
These also amount to economic crimes – NATO has sent the Libyan oil industry back at least three years according to a spokesperson from Wood Mackenzie. Production had been 1.6 million b/d before the terrorist insurgency.
Get-out card
The pig-headed arrogance of the leaders of the European NATO countries involved may eventually be countered by an attack of intelligence on the other side of the Atlantic, where it is evident the White House is trying to distance itself from yet another foreign policy disaster and where the State Department no doubt sees its plan to destroy the African Union and re-colonise Africa with AFRICOM go up in smoke. Obama 1 Hillary Clinton 0.
Time to pull out, time to recognise the no-fly zone was successfully implemented, time to recognise that Muammar al-Qathahi was not killing civilians but rather, defending them from terrorists, and time to admit that the LAF are doing what they can not only to avoid all civilian casualties but also, even those among the rats. Can NATO claim the same?

if Gaddafi have lost moral authority because he is tyranny what makes people think the rebels have moral authority to rule Libya? If it was my decision, Nato would have to be dissolved, and all the concerned persecuted, rebels prosecuted then we would be in position of prosecuting Gaddafi. All of them have caused loss of life and are all criminals.
The world is not fair

by Stephen Lendman

With Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC) falling apart and rebel forces in disarray, today's headlines belie the truth, reported by independent "un-in-bed-with" journalists and other sources.

On August 16, Lizzie Phelan's Libya diary "clear(ed) up the latest media rubbish on Libya," saying:

Gaddafi forces liberated the "hitherto rebel-held" town of Misrata. "Last night, the Libyan army moved into the center of the city, and now the rebels are trapped between Misrata and Tawergha."

About three-fourths of the city, including its port, is secured, "which was a lifeline" for shipping rebels arms and other supplies.

At a press conference attended by around 200 tribes (including the four largest comprising half the population), Libya's media spokesman, Dr. Moussa Ibrahim, confirmed it.

Th major four, including Wafalla, Tarhouna, Zlitan and Washafana, all support Gaddafi.

"The tribal leaders also confirmed that Zawiya and Sorman are secure, in contrast to (falsified) claims by (in bed with) foreign reporters in Tripoli and Djerba (Tunisia) that they have been taken by the rebels."

In addition, claims that rebels control Ghuriyan are untrue. Ongoing clashes there continue.

Major media reports lie, although pockets of rebel resistance remain. Nonetheless, they're "isolated and surrounded by the Libyan army and tribes."

Falsified major media reports stand in stark contrast to "Libyan tribes who, of course, know their land with great intimacy."

It's clear media bosses want Libyans demoralized to think all is lost so give up. In addition, NATO's "been desperately trying to secure some victory before August 17 (Ramadan's 17th day), a very important date in the Islamic calendar.

On Ramadan's 17th day in 624 AD in the Islamic calendar, the Prophet Muhammad won an important Battle of Badr victory in present day Saudi Arabia. It was a key turning point against his opponents.

Fast-forwarding to today, major media sources falsify reports "to create confusion and panic on the ground." I

n an August 15 telephone address to supporters massed in Green Square, Gaddafi "reasserted his calls for the Libyan people to remain steadfast in defeating NATO's allies on the ground and NATO itself."

Phelan also said unconfirmed reports say rebel commander Khalifa Hefter was captured, the former army officer turned CIA asset, having formerly lived near its Langley, VA headquarters since the early 1990s.

If true, it'll will create more disarray among TNC leaders, perhaps better described as the gang that can't shoot or get their stories straight.

"So the media war goes on," said Phelan, on the ground in Tripoli, reporting important truths on her Lizzie's Liberation site, accessed through the following link:

Lizzie's Liberation

Contrasting Falsified Major Media Reports

The vulgarity of lying needs no comment. Doing it for a living is beyond reproach. It doesn't deter takers, however, like New York Times writers David Kirkpatrick and Kareem Fahim headlining, "A Top Libyan Official Appears to Defect, as Rebels Defend Recent Gains," saying:

Interior Minister Nassr al-Mabrouk "landed in Cairo in a private plane with nine family members who were traveling on tourist visas....The defection would signal a new crack in the Qaddafi government...."

Fact check:

Al-Mabrouk didn't defect as widely reported. He left for an operation in Cairo, saying he stands firmly with Gaddafi. It's unsurprising he'd want family members with him for support.

Kirkpatrick and Fahim continued saying, "(R)ebels, emboldened by their gains in recent days, are losing incentive to make concessions."

Fact check:

Falsified rebel gains are, in fact, unreported losses and disarray. Moreover, without NATO air support, they'd have been routed months ago. Air cover also gave NATO a chance to slaughter and injure thousands of Libyan civilians, as well as cause horrific mass destruction, related to imperial, not military, aims.

Both Times writers also reported rebel claims of having Tripoli surrounded as well as key supply lines cut off. None of it is true, but fact-checking isn't part of Times writers' job description - just reporting accounts ordered by their bosses.

From Tripoli, independent journalist/Middle East/Central Asian analyst Mahdi Nazemroaya explained in a morning email:

"The insurgency was defeated in Misurata. NATO responded with massive bombing. One route is controlled. Zawiya and Sorman have not fallen. There have been attacks on the route. They are trying to cut the supply routes off" but haven't succeeded.

On August 15, Washington Post writer Leila Fadel was no better than other accounts headlining, "Gaddafi isolated as rebels advance, aide flies to Cairo," falsifying the same agitprop as their Times counterparts, claiming rebels have "a stranglehold on the Libyan capital, Tripoli."

London Guardian writers are also complicit, headlining the following August 15 and 16 stories, better described as media lies:

August 15: "Libya's interior minister flies to Egypt in apparent defection"

August 15: "Libyan rebels enter oil town where decisive battle may yet be fought"

Fact check: Zawiya was referred to, securely controlled by Gaddafi's forces.

August 15: "No stalemate in Libya - the writing is on the wall for Gaddafi"

August 16: "Libya shows signs of slipping from Muammar Gaddafi's grasp"

August 16: "Live Syria, Libya and Middle East unrest - live updates," many, in fact, falsified like others.

Al Zajeera is also complicit in misreporting on Libya. On August 16, it headlined, "Libyan rebels push to isolate Tripoli," sounding more like CNN, Fox News, and The New York Times than legitimate journalists.

The report repeated the same misinformation about isolating Tripoli, controlling most of Zawiya, and other distortions.

An earlier August 12 report claimed "Fleeing Libyans say Gaddafi regime crumbling" as rebels advance toward the capital. Again untrue.

Al Jazeera, of course, is based in, funded by, and controlled by Qatar, a coalition NATO partner against Libya, its armed forces supporting rebels on the ground.

As a result, it reports lack credibility and should be avoided. Angry Arab editor As'ad AbuKhalil says they're "like watching MSNBC after being purchased by Murdoch."

Of course, it's worthless under its current owner, Comcast, and previous one, General Electric, especially on issues of war and peace, as well as lawless US imperialism.

A Final Comment

The battle for Libya continues. Overwhelming numbers support Gaddafi and want their country free from imperial control. They're also prepared to fight for it, knowing the unacceptable alternative - colonization, pillaging, loss of freedom, and perhaps their lives.

What better reasons to resist than those!

un secretary general ban ki-moon has expressed concern over the rising civilian casualties in libya, saying there will be no military solution for resolving the conflict in the north african nation.

"the secretary general is deeply concerned by reports of the unacceptably large number of civilian casualties as a result of the conflict in libya," a statement from ban's office said on thursday.

"the secretary general calls on all parties to exercise extreme caution in their actions, in order to minimize any further loss of civilian life," the statement added.

The un chief also had a telephone conversation with libyan prime minister baghdadi al-mahmudi on wednesday in which he voiced concern about rising civilian death toll and the destruction of infrastructure.

Thousands of people have been killed in fighting between loyalists of libyan ruler muammar gaddafi and revolutionary forces since mid-february when the uprising against the regime started.

The libyan regime claims more than one thousand civilians have lost their lives in airstrikes by nato warplanes.

Libyan officials have said that at least 85 civilians were killed in a nato air raid on the village of majer, east of the capital tripoli, late on monday. The military alliance, however, said it hit a military target.

Nato jets have carried out more than 18,533 sorties, including at least 7,037 strike sorties since the alliance took command of the libya mission on march 31, according to a reuters report on thursday.

Experts say the main motive behind the western attack on libya is the vast oil reserves of the north african country.

Kweli viongoyi wa africa ni km marehemu tu hawana msaada wwt, waendelee kula bata wkt mwenzao anapigwa ila wakumbuke leo kwa gadaffi kesho kwa museven,jk au kwingineko

Mods naomba mnivumilie uruhusu watu watoe michango yao kuhusu hili swala. Nimefanya utafiti kwenye web leo naona napata majibu ambayo ni completely opposite! Hicho ndicho kinachonisukumu niombe msaada kwa wana JF wengine wao wanaelewa vipi kuhusu developments in LIBYA.

Hivyo hata mimi nilivyokuwa naamini...

TAIFA LAO LITAGAWANYIKA KWA MISINGI YA KIKABILA, MAKUNDI YA MAGAIDI YATAWEZA KUPENYEZA KIRAHISI NA MABEBERU WATAZIFAIDI BILA JASHO MALIASILI ZA WALIBYA

AU resolution will take place soon... maana kwa upande wa vita NATO wanaelemewa, On the other hand USA & It's allies wanaelemewa na madeni/financial crisis.
